  • On Feb 9th, 2023, Union Pacific Railroad operated its rotary snow plow over Donner Pass. A spreader set worked west between Soda Springs and Cisco, plow, plowing snow onto the #2 track/up against the snow bank from the #1 track. The rotary traveled east up the #2 track, cutting the snow bank back. Here is the condensed version of the footage I caught.

    When I was a kid in Truckee, the minute the snow began to fall, ALL the town plows and many of the Dads with trucks with plows would immediately go out and start plowing, because we had SO much snow, SO fast, every winter, that if you got behind it, you'd lose all the roads; the town would get shut in and isolated....for the whole winter. For real.

    Interesting fact, the man who laid out the right of way through these mountains in the 1860s, Theodore Juda, was a visionary, and some sections are still used today unchanged from his original layout.

    • @itwasaliens

      @@itwasaliens Designers and engineers have rarely built large projects instead of supervising them, what is your point? Are you trying to bring race into engineering...sad. Well, good thing that even China didn't care about the almost 400,00 people that died on behalf of the Chinese government building the great wall.
      Honestly, after years of this whining and complaining, no one cares. We know history, we know that immigrant Chinese labor AS WELL as other labor was used to build the railways in the west. Funny, don't see you all complaining about Irish labor or any other European immigrants. Seems like your biase is against a certain race. That's racist. Be better.

For a long time I didn't know what their purpose was. We would go to the Harrah's Automobile Collection which at the time was in Sparks adjacent to the rail yard and I would always look for these plows. They are very impressive in person.

    Beautiful footage, especially when going to full screen mode. Reminds me of plowing for El Dorado County DOT in Tahoe and when the Rotaries would come out to widen the roads, so there would be a place to put the snow from the next storm. Reminds me of the old steam powered rotaries the SPRR used. Used to keep them in Sparks or Roseville. This plow doesn't have the directional chute our DOT rotaries had, no need on the railroad right of way so they are just "tubbing" downhill. Our old DOT rotaries had 12V-71 Detroit diesels, you could hear them working miles away. The guy in the snow cat is doing what we called "pimping" for the rotary plow, which we did with a grader, both to pack the snow ahead of the rotary plow and to cleanup spillage behind the rotaries. Great video brings back memories!

    Back in the day, i was fortunate enough to be invited aboard a couple of private rail road cars trips and when we traveled this route after a fresh snowfall, standing on the back platform was spectacular with only two small ribbons of track revealed in the fresh snow as we passed through! Not being from snow country it was always a thrill to watch the rails disappearing behind the car. At different points along the way, snow would be falling covering the tracks in the distance like nobody had disturbed natures beauty! 🚦🚂

      @LBHolder99 11 месяцев назад

      Rotary snow plows are only used when the snow is falling too heavy for the flangers to keep the tracks clear. Generally 2-4 flanger sets are used and run constantly between Truckee and Emigrant Gap when the snow is falling. The flangers repeated trips start to build up a canyon wall of snow on both sides of the track so then during the day (when the crews can see better) the Spreader is brought out to shove those snow canyons over the downhill edge of the right of way. When it is really snowing heavily is when you see the rotary in action.
