As a current Lexus owner I can honestly say that I will NEVER buy a different brand ever again. I bought a very high mileage, but well taken care of, 1991 LS400 eleven years ago and I still drive it daily. I currently have close to 400,000 miles and going strong. That said, I am not a "Lexus can do no wrong" fanboy. I am very appreciative of the Car Care Nut for making these videos and helping us make better buying decisions. I am sure that when I am ready to buy a second car or replace my current car, I will use this list as a guide in order to avoid problems. Big thank you.

I have been driving Lexus cars since the late 1990s starting with the LS400 up to what we now drive..2015 RX350. I think this is my 12th Lexus in last 25 plus years. I have bought certified and non certified Lexuses and several service loaners with nominal mileage on them like my current car which had 10K on it when i bought it. I can honestly say that in all those years the only problem i ever had with one what when the battery went dead on my original LS400...Im not lying!LOL> My current service loaner which i have owned since 2015 now has 88000 miles on it and I am itchy to get a newer NX300 to get upgraded technology. Unfortunately, Lexus pricing, both new and used, have skyrocketed since the pandemic so i am very reluctantly considering switching to another Toyota, or Nissan Rogue, or Hyundai Santa Fe, but i HATE to switch because of their reliability compared to Lexus. Now that my wife and i are older , retired and dont drive nearly so much as before, i really should buy a certified RX or NX, but dealers will try to STEAL my tradein which is in excellent shape, while charging ridiculous for the same used Lexuses they are trying to steal in trades on their new or slightly used cars. As much as we love the Lexus that wont be happening. Maybe i will sell my car privately and then buy a Lexus directly, but with only one car that wont be easy with limited inventory at Lexus dealers. I would never buy a Lexus from a non Lexus dealer because their cars are not certified.

I'm a Lexus Master Tech and completely agree with this video! You nailed it man. A couple of things I would add.
The increased maintenance cost for GS/IS mainly comes from the way the cars eat tires. We have seen them need tires as early as 20k miles.
Buying an LS430 now, you run the risk of oil leak issues. It's usually a couple thousand to fix the leaks. However once you do, they are bulletproof reliable.
Avoid any Lexus with the 4.6L V8. That motor is hunk of garbage. About every 100k we see coolant leaks coming from the valley plate. It's a very labor intensive job, usually around the 2000 dollar range to fix.
Ls460's go through front control arms every 100k. OEM arms are not cheap and if you think you can get around that by going aftermarket, they wear out 3x as fast.
Not many people realize how reliable ISF's are. With consistent maintenance we have seen them reach over 300k miles. The 5.0L V8 is a solid motor

Just bought a very very good condition 2010 GX 460 for my wife... really concerning to hear that about it's engine. Is that your only complaint about the engine? Is there any preventative maintenance to avoid it? Or maybe a quick way to check that it's not leaking to keep an eye on that specific problem?

    • @thomaspattison1397
      @thomaspattison1397 6 месяцев назад +8

@Presence_of_Mind_ It's much less common for the valley plate leaks to happen on GX460s. I'd say we see valley plate leaks 1 in every 200 trucks with 100k+ miles. The LS460s are more like 1 in every 50. When the leaks get severe, you can see pink going down the back side of the engine and on top of the transmission. We usually check in the shop by using a boroscope to look under the intake manifold. A good preventive measure would be to change the out the coolant

I bought a 2005 Lexus RX330 in 2016. It had 197,000 km, was in excellent shape: very well maintained (complete maintenance history, receipts, etc) with only one previous owner. I LOVE this car - it now has 217,000 km. Mechanic recommended next service I replace timing belt (11 yrs old) and change cam and crankshaft seals. This car has been pretty much trouble free over the last 8 years and is a nice, smooth, quiet ride.

'05 LS430 owner here (after upgrading from many years of a '92 LS400). After nearly 3 years of ownership, I can certainly attest to the reliability of these tanks. Even being 16 years old, it has only ever required regular maintenance items to keep going and going. Almost all of these items are extremely simple to do if you have some basic tools around and a spot to work. Additionally, the Lexus forums are a wealth of information regarding questions, troubleshooting, and general support. I can't speak highly enough about my ownership experience and have tried to convince several people to get them as well. What really separates the LS430 for me though (on top of the reliability and simplicity of mechanical design), is the craftsmanship and quality of materials. The doors feel like a bank vault, all of the wood is real, and it's still one of the quietest and most effortless interiors I've ever been in. It's spoiled me in a sense, as I find myself critiquing cars that are newer and significantly more expensive that seem subpar when compared to my old Lexus. If you're in the market for the best bargain luxury sedan around, look no further than the LS430.

@@pasidudissanayaka1843Imo, 140k miles is pretty damn low for a Lexus, and if it’s been well-maintained then that’s even better, but you should definitely find out when/if the transmission has been serviced if possible, and maybe see if there’s a maintenance log or Carfax report available. I’ve heard that it’s not uncommon for some IS250’s to have carbon buildup issues, and the car may feel a bit slow compared to the +100 HP the 350 adds, but overall they should definitely still be reliable cars and I can’t think of any other downsides aside from what was mentioned in this video (I’ve been doing a ton of research on Lexus cars myself since I’m considering getting a used one, but this is a bit of disclaimer since I’ve never actually owned a Lexus myself). I’m 6’6” and I have plenty of room in it and so do the people in the back thanks to the sliding and reclining rear seats. I previously had a 2002 4runner which was an unbelievable car offroad and in the snow but the fuel mileage compared to my RX was horrendous. I’ve also owned 2 gs300s in the past year, one of them a 1998 and the other a 2000, and those are also high on my list of cars I’d recommend to anyone looking for a cheap and reliable commuting car or first car. Tons of leg room in them as well. They get high 20’s for mpg and they ride amazing, both had over 250k on them and you would’ve thought they were brand new with how well they ran and they can take a beating. I only got rid of them because I moved down to college and didn’t need to have 3 Lexus’s😂. And as far as maintenance and parts for the rx330 they are dirt cheap especially compared to some of the German competitors from the same years. A full set of ball joints for my car is around $200 and my friend is looking at around $1,200 for ball joints for his Audi. The only complaint I have about my RX is the squeaky dash when it gets cold out, other than that I have nothing bad to say about the vehicle

Not all LS 460s have air suspension. Look for the height adjustment button on the center consul. Those are the cars with air suspension. Another big problem with the LS 460 are the control arms. In the earlier years 2007 through 2009 they weren’t that good and they often need replaced. OEM parts could cost as high as $8000 to replace all four. Actually there are eight. Another problem is the brake modulator. These often fail and are pretty expensive to replace. And also the water pumps sometimes will be suspect. So if you’re looking to buy one, check to see if those items have already been replaced. and if not, at least have them thoroughly inspected. And they are a fantastic car.

I own a LS400 1993, Bought if for $4000.00 three years ago in California, one owner, pristine condition, and less than 80k miles. I was in the process of doing some things on it, pesky electronic things, headliner came down in front, leather in front needs a bit of help, but overall mechanical condition is good with the exception of the speedometer doesn't always work. I then had a few days of feeling poorly and spent them online looking at used Lexus. I bought, on impulse , a LS460L in Florida, one owner, corporate CEO owned. Thank goodness it does not have the air suspension after listening to these videos, however, even at less than 60K on it, already have had issues with brakes, not THE BIG issue, but still some things had to be replace to get the brake warnings off. It is a gorgeous car but I wish I had taken the 17K I used to buy it and instead sent my LS400 to have EVERY single thing fixed including the interior leather front seats only, and all the pesky electronic goodies that aren't working anymore like the up/down antenna , the radio which is on and off, same with the speedometer, a few paint issues hardly noticeable. I could have completely restored the LS400 and had money leftover instead of buying the LS460L, I am going to try and sell the 460 ASAP before I loose too much on it. If someone who has more cash to burn than me buys it, it will still be a great car, but for me not so much.

What I do to prolong the problem is to use injection cleaner every 1000 miles and only use gasoline with at least 5% ethanol. From summer 2021 our 95 gasoline in Sweden contains 10% ethanol by default. I sometimes fill up with extra ethanol up to 15% of a full tank and the car is not complaining. 1. ECU was throwing up knock sensor codes but it was the ECU itself that needed replacing.
    2. The original alternator died on me yesterday so that is getting replaced.

I bought a 2012 Lexus LS460 at the beginning of August, and I replaced the front rotors and pads (bought at the Lexus dealership). They were not a "small fortune". I spent around $380 and these are surprisingly huge rotors and pads. I had to check online to be sure they weren't the Brembo kit (they aren't) since they were so large, and dual piston, fixed calipers. Maybe his idea of a small fortune is a bit different than mine. I'd consider pads and rotors on an AMG CL65 or S63 to be a small fortune, at around $2,000. Not the Lexus. Last week I changed both engine air filters, and the cabin air filter. I think the total was around 50 bux at the Toyota dealership (it was closer at the time, and the parts I replaced said Toyota anyways). My oil change wasn't too bad, maybe 85 to 90 bux for 10 quarts of full synthetic Mobil 1, and a Percolator filter (not the cheaper one). I do expect the control arms to be pricey, but instead of getting the Lexus ones at $500 each, it was recommended to get the Mevotech set, which are comparable to OEM, but you can get them all for that price, which is a huge savings. Also, all LS460s don't come with air suspension. I believe it's standard on the 460L as well as the LS600h. The LS460 base has regular suspension, unless you get a less common model that has a different description--a comfort package or something, and it will have the suspension setting button on the bezel to the left of the shifter.

Owned a 2007 LS 460 and I loved this car. I took it to 225000 km and essentially all I had to do was your usual maintenance. Water pump, rear struts, brakes. The car was easy to work on and would agree the brakes were not great on the car as I did have pulsation issues with it. Mine had the rear struts and was not expensive to fix, even though my car had the rear reclining seats it still was not terrible job to do. I would always get under 8 litres per 100 or 31 MPG (Imp Gal) on the highway. I live in Canada and with good winter tires traction was not an issue as long as you had good winter tires. I would not agree with his assessment except the brakes were a little disappointing and you had to use premium fuel. This car was a dream and would buy one again.

My LS460 is still going strong. The only thing which I expect to go soon is the control arms bushings and the air suspension. My only real complaint is the door trim paint starting to peel and Lexus’s decision to use a bad quality interior sticky dash plastic. I also agree with the brakes not being the best even though the technology is superior. Otherwise the car is an absolute tank and in Australia we only got the fully optioned models and ai love radar cruise control and the auto side and rear blinds. It’s gonna be hard to upgrade from this car because it’s almost perfect.

I have a 99 ES300. 300,000 miles on it, but I had to replace the transmission at 244,000 miles. Apparently the transmissions used in this model year were prone to overheating. I also had to replace exhaust manifold, rack and pinion bushing, ball joints, and of course regular maintenance. Everyone told me to junk the car once the transmission went out, but I decided to spend the $3,600 to put a remanufactured transmission in it. I drive the car 50 miles every day due to commuting to the city and the car is flawless. I am saving so much on insurance and of course no car note. This car has been very good to me and it is a joy to drive, so I am glad I invested in a new transmission. I plan to keep the car as long as I can. I put premium gas in it - the owners manual recommends premium fuel but it is not required for this model year. I used to put regular gas but now that I have high mileage I think the premium helps with keeping things clean and preventing engine knocking. Synthetic oil changes every 3K. The suspension rattles over bumps but that is to be expected at this mileage. Thankful it still gets me to my destination in comfort. I changed the headlights because they were so clouded and also changed to led headlight. Makes a huge update to the look of the car. When I wash and wax it, it looks like a new car to me. Love the pillar less windows that the newer ES’s do not have. For a weekend car, I plan on getting an LX exactly for the reason you stated - it is an investment. But with the way gas prices are, I don’t think it will be practical driving a car that gets 12mpg city. Thank you for your videos.

It hasn’t ever given me trouble besides when I had to replace a few control arms, it’s a fantastic car and yes repairs on it are a little pricy but if you are prepared for that then in my opinion it’s the best purchase in the world

    You think IS250 was bad...
Here in Europe there is something called IS220d. It was SO bad that Lexus decided to never produce diesel engines again ever. To compare prices IS250 starts at 5k euros, for 400k+ km car, IS220d ends at 8k for 2010 model with 170000km. Why? Basically that engine has lifetime of ~200k kilometers. Then it needs to be taken out, disassembled, cleaned, reassembled and then it will hold for another 100k. Then you repeat the process. Such work cots around 1000-2000 euros, probably more in richer countries.
That being said, in Europe IS250 usually doesn't have carbon buildup because of higher octane gas used here. Also the better fuel I put into it the better it drives. Sometimes I like to put 98, then engine noise almost disappears and car pulls quite nicely.

I own a 2007 IS250 auto from new in the UK, always fed her with super unleaded at 97 to 99 Ron. The engine is clean and look brand new, no carbon buildup, actually apart from a strange rattle from the dashboard (rectified years ago by my local dealer) nothing ever gone wrong with any system.
So after 14 years of ownership I think it's a keeper. In the US feeding this engine with low grade 87ron petrol seems line a bad idea in hindsight, Lexus should have specified higher octane petrol across the board.

Because of the direct injection, I opt for old cars that are much more accessible and easier to repair myself. And with the modern car because of all those unnecessary gadgets, a lot can break and unaffordable repairs and errors that are almost undetectable, so that a lot is replaced "on the gamble" and in the case of misgambling, it is charged with a nice story.

Trust him on what he says about rust. We bought a 2011 Toyota Venza XLE V6 back in the summer of 2020. Great riding car, but we didn't check under the car for rust. Now, the frame is fine, but every supporting part (brakes, rotors, calipers, suspension parts) was completely corroded, and had to all be replaced. The corrosion affected the rear differential as well, and that went as well. $8000 later, the car is fine, but had we known to look for rust, we never would've bought it. We then bought a 2013 RX 350, and on that one we checked for rust first.

Rust must have a lot to do with the region of the country, weather and sometimes whether or not they put salt on the roads, etc. None of our vehicles end up with much rust at all where we live, up north.

My wife says we only take it out of garage for weddings and funerals. I’m 65 years young and when I drive the car I always run it up to 120-130 mph before I put it back in garage. Great car. If you buy ur car close to 100 thousand you better make sure stuff was replaced or its gonna be on u.
