What good sense! ❤ We are re-using our Advent activities, minimizing decorations, and only giving one edible gift on Christmas Day (as agreed by all adult family members). We play a game to see which edible gift you will receive. The focus is on family fun rather than shopping and gifting.
@theroadtosimple first we decide a budget for the one gift you will bring, e.g. something you can eat, no more than $20. All the gifts are put under the tree. We count them and put numbers in a hat. Each person pulls a number out of the hat. Number One chooses a gift and opens it. Number Two then chooses and opens a gift, but they get to decide whether to keep their gift or swap gifts with Number One. And so on. The higher the number you pulled out of the hat, the more options you get to swap. The last person opens the last gift and then gets the choice of all the gifts - lucky them. This has simplified gift giving. It has become a fun tradition we all look forward to (we also have fun guessing who bought each gift). The best part is that anyone outside the family that joins us on the day (e.g. a recently divorced friend, someone visiting from another country) also brings a gift and plays the game with us. It means every adult only gets one gift, and we are all equal, so it is enjoyable for everyone.
I fell outside a store carrying bags and did not see the step down…I was out of town and unfamiliar with the parking lot. My husband did not completely fall but I twisted my left foot real bad and scraped my right knee and hands and I’m sore all over. I can take baby steps but slowly if I hold onto the wall or whatever is near. My oldest son, who lives with us, learned to make pie crust, pumpkin pie and pecan pie while I sat on a stool. I have been teaching him our favorite meals, etc., over the past year or so, and now he might have to help with Xmas cookies. Of course he has always helped thru the years, but we sure got a lesson on how to explain things between what is in my head and what he could do to make things for me. We made a turkey breast in the crockpot since only the three of us this year. My youngest son and his girlfriend came from out of town for big breakfast since her family was having a big thanksgiving dinner at 4. As I put away the October decorations I have a box of stuff to donate. Getting out the Xmas stuff now so will see what else I can donate. Happy Holidays❤
Personally I do not think you have to, especially if your budget does not allow for that. You can gracefully accept their gift, express your sincere gratitude and explain that you were not expecting a gift from them (if that is the case.) Or you could send them a nice thank you note. I will pass your best wishes along to my mom!
Great tips! Thank you for sharing!

Love this idea! I’m curious- What game do you play to see who gets which gift?
