- Ich Will is a personal favorite by our favorite german band, I have gotten a few suggestions on other tracks that WILL BE translated in a near future. Next up is "Mutter" that will released at the end of february or at the beginning of march!
But now, some trivia about Ich Will. The music video of "Ich Will" features the band members staging a bank robbery, making it seem as realistic as possible. The video shows both the robbery and its aftermath, and moves between these two scenes.
The robbery: The band is shown entering a bank wearing stockings over their heads, except for Flake, who has a very large and elaborate bomb strapped to his chest. They quickly remove their masks and head for the front desk. A bank employee reaches for the panic button, but she is seen by Richard, who presses her hand against the button, intentionally triggering the alarm. The woman faints, and Richard dances with her unconscious body until Ollie confirms that the Polizei and Media have arrived. The group continues to terrorize the hostages and vandalize the bank, while also fantasizing about the media storm when they exit. In another room, Till is giving a live interview to the press, who appear to be slain in the next scene, though the broadcast continues. As the band (excluding Flake) exit the bank unarmed, they are swarmed by members of the Spezialeinsatzkommando instead of the media as anticipated. Despite this the band seems to revel in the attention they are getting, and shortly after the timer on Flake's bomb reaches zero. The video quickly flicks through a series of short clips from some of Rammstein's other music videos,(Seemann, Du hast, Du riechst so gut '95, Du riechst so gut '98, Stripped and Sonne) then comes to an end.

When you don't understand them, it makes his voice more like an instrument. That said, learning the lyrics and their meaning is why I love the band even more. And their live shows are among the best to go to. Saw them a few years back and they were easily the best single act I've seen.

Musically these guys are badass! So heavy.
The sound isn't completely unique, but their stage presence and creativity is what separates them from others. They're definitely fun to watch.

FYI: The very last time the lyrics are "Wir verstehen euch". Which means not "We do not understand you" but the opposite "We understand you". The whole song Till sings that they can't hear you but in the end he says that they can. "Verstehen" in german does mean both understanding someone in the acoustic way and in the logical way. It can be used in both ways.

As with nearly all Rammstein songs, this one is open for lots of different interpretations. None of which have been outright denied or supported by the band members themselves. They always refrain from commenting on the supposedly intended meaning of their songs.
So here is my interpretation: the original video features the band members as bank robbers, with Flake being the 'sacrifical lamb' with a huge bomb strapped to his chest, plus a dead-man switch in his hands. No matter what anyone would do, neither cops nor guard would be able to disarm the bomb with Flake either pressing the trigger or releasing the safety.
In the video the band members terrorize the customers and employees of the bank. They even help one of the employees firmly press the alarm button, calling for the police.
They WANT the attention of police and media. They even stage multiple situations where they are certain they will have dozens of still and film cameras on them, making certain that every part of their villainous acts will be recorded for posterity. No matter what happens to them, they WANT to go down in history.
So they want others to see them, hear them, feel them, understand them.
We want you to trust us, we want you to believe everything we say.
We want to see your hands, we want to go down in your applause.
Everything in those lines feeds into the desire to be adored and trusted, no matter what.
But then comes the one cryptic line: "Ich versteh Euch nicht" or "Wir versteh'n Euch nicht" as in "I don't understand your" or "We don't understand you."
Because the band members now have committed multiple crimes in the video yet the masses still seem to adore them. Media swarms around them, even while the cops take them down to arrest them. They are not even resisting the arrest. They WANT all the circus show to revolve around them. Their court case simply feeds their desire for fame and fortune, no matter where that fame comes from. Even if it is only at the cost of the life of one of the band members.
Obviously it is only a video, no one died for it. Yet it still signifies that the band members don't really understand the hype around their persons or the band.
It is not only a comment on the band themselves, but the whole music industry that hypes up one band and feeds the frenzy of rabid fans charging forward and defending their idols, no matter what they have done. Which is something that the band can't comprehend.
Just my two cents on the lyrics of this song. I am very open to hear others' interpretations as well. But please keep it civil, right?
