Band made it to State 250 members when I was there 2012 cowboys stadium lost my spot , band had practice at 5 am 4 days a week in the summer. late people would run before practice band workout. one mile run 30 push-ups sit-ups & more .
And I do mean the exact music being played. I remember some of the guys on the team actually dancing to some of the music and of course they got caught by the coaches!! So it was extra sprints for us after practice in the 100 degree heat!! Good Times!!
I don't know who Rick Garza is. Maybe you meant Dennis Garza? Regardless, this year, our assistants were Leonard Brown, Joel Wright (RIP), Carlos Gil, Dennis Garza and Jesus Garcia (RIP). Head director Javier Vera. It was Mr. Vera's 1st or 2nd year as head director. Mr. Vera started as an assistant my freshman year, if I'm not mistaken (81-82?)
OMG!!! I see my self as a little white blurr spinning my ass off with my flag, LOL. It was the first year for the color guard - was 4 seniors and 4 8th graders - ONLY 8 of us. LOL. So many memories. Whoever posted this, (kallel007) thank you. I had never seen this performance, even though I was in it. We went to STATE this year! \m/
Yes, we did! We beat Odessa Permian in 5A and then went on to 7th in the nation the next summer. No one ever came close to us since then! It's not posted as, it's a fact! Nice try "longhorns". You came up "shorthorns", like all others in Laredo. Martin, United, north, South, east, & whatever else you can come up with. There is only one Texas 5A State Marching Band Championship trophy in Laredo & it's at the JW Nixon Band Hall. Take a trip to 2000 Plum Street go admire it.
In 1983-84 United was a 4A school, in 84 and up we were 5A. This performance was at the UIL State semi finals for 4A division.
I remember listening to this while we were practicing jv football in back of the field house.Wow brings back many fond memories !!
Carlos Gil was the drum instructor that year, and then later became a director.

correction, the assistant directors were Rick Garza, Joel Wright and L. Brown. I think Mr. Gil and Mr. Evland came later.

Looks like it was filmed by one of those old movie cameras with a hand crank. I guess that is from copies of copies being made.
or the VHS tape got damaged
Other directors were Joel Write, Leonard Brown, Carlos Gil (maybe)and maybe Dennis Evland... not sure about Carlos and Dennis
