  • The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) contracted Wind Decommissioning Service, LLC (Wind Decom) who then, in turn, contracted with Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) to assist them in the energetic felling of a redundant 78-meter wind turbine unit that failed to reliably deliver power to the community and Casino facility at Mystic Lake.
CDI's energetic felling method was selected over crane dismantling to eliminate risk of personnel working at high elevations for an extended period, or the risks associated with mechanical tripping with cables that would have put demolition personnel and guests at the adjacent SMSC golf facility at risk from premature collapse, breaking cables, and fly of debris upon impact of the Unit at grade.
CDI prepared the unit for felling in less than five (5) hours the afternoon of June 20, 2022, placed a small quantity of explosives the morning of June 21st, and felled the unit in ten (10) seconds within a 30-minute security window. There was no damage to the golf course infrastructure or interruption of service from the Casino switchyard located less than 100’ from the base of the wind turbine unit. There was no need to evacuate residential properties as close as 970’ away.

Nicely done as usual. There goes your 'renewable' energy, if any wind.

it's just down the road from our local amusement park, Valleyfair... plus it's right next to an astonishingly gaudy casino complex, and right down the road from a horse racing track... not exactly what we think of as the pretty part of town in any way. :D
I feel really happy that the band has been able to grow from their tiny Little Six casino they used to run into the modern complex it has become... but they really needed a better planner, as the complex just seems like their only goal was to pave the Earth.

I've seen a lot of wind installations fail - I get the sense there's a lot of quality issues, turbines are built poorly and don't perform or are too unreliable to be economically viable. Seems to be doing better overseas though, they must be doing something right that we're doing wrong. Impressive felling though, managed to lay it down exactly between the trees - wonder if that was planned to that level of precision, or just luck? A direct overhead view from a drone would have been even more impressive.

probably old, the turbine model from what I gathered is kind of old looking, but it also could be because of residents or height restrictions

Most likely everything about that windmill is obsolete. If it were profitable to recycle any of it other than scrap, they would have. This is what’s going to happen to all of them eventually. The ones in Holland still working.

    • @michaelimbesi2314

They’re very cost effective. Building a new wind farm is actually cheaper than continuing to run an existing coal plant of the same effective output. They wouldn’t be all over the place if they weren’t cost effective. This one just happened to not be working right.
