Man, isn't THAT the truth! I've been in both of those camps. Up until 2 days ago, I had never heard of her, then I just happened to stumble on her here on RUclips. Half-way through seeing her first video (for me) my jaw had dropped in disbelief that any human being could play a banjo like her! Her talent is incredible! Both voice and pickin' talent. I made this comment on another of her videos, but I think if Charlie Daniels went down to play against Mean Mary with his "fiddle made of gold," it would be Charlie who would lose his soul!
Ditto!! To both of you!! Amazing talent like Mary's doesn't come along every day. The world is such a better place with her in it!!!!! My wife and I would love to hear her in person some day. I too, found her here about a year ago on accident. So glad i did, we both grew up with this kind of music, this brings us home again.
Sadly, while Mean Mary's music is of such very high quality and such deep, authentic, positive, pure feelings; many people's musical taste has gone to trashy music with trashy lyrics and the Blame And Hate America For Everything Movement has pushed them to reject authentic All American voices and talents like Mean Mary. You set the bar so high with your other songs, that this one doesn't quite reach it. And Peter, Paul, & Mary set the bar for this song (written by John Denver) so high that it's hard to reach. So, the best I can say here is, "not bad.".
I disagree. PP&M were studio recordings highly rehearsed and professionally tweaked for best sound quality. I definitely think she could step into Traver's place today and do just as well with Stookey and Yarrow. I go back to 1959 listening to Peter, Paul and Mary and heard them in live concert in 1964.
If you can't be gracious with a compliment best to just keep silent and your opinions to yourself. Your comment says more about you than your comment does about Mary's performance
