Trying to find binary right and wrong in history (or anything) is folly. We can assign better and worse people/ideologies/sides to a conflict, but actually saying the better side was fully in the right is misleading at best. The entire point of history is to learn from it, deciding "this side was right" blinds you to most of the lessons that are there, even if that was the objectively better side.
It's shocking how many parents and school board members can't recognize this and want things they see as bad removed from textbooks, as if knowing something happened will make people agree with it. Which then leads to it happening again because people don't know what went wrong the first time.
@@unachimba9 I can give you a few the soviets in ww2,they were vicious to the people of Germany doesn't matter if they were military or not but they were on the allied side and was getting supplies from the allies.another example again from ww2 was the nukes dropped on Japan, was it worth the entire city's population to avoid the ground invasion or not you can see it both ways and both are not entirely wrong
The AR-180 is the only AR variety that managed to stay off the ban list in Canada. A few Canadian companies are making modern varieties and takes on this platform.
@@jeremiahfyan Yes you would have your freedom but shitty gun laws. At least the loyalists in the North love their guns. In 1998 when the rest of the UK banned hand guns it was the UUP and DUP who vetoed it in the North.
I received my dads AR-180 about 15 yeas ago. We had modified 6 Ar-15 mags to work. Back in 2014 I found that G36 mags have the cut already in the mag and works flawlessly.
I'm from Ireland and a fun fact is that it was very hard to get .223 legally for hunting back during the troubles in the Republic of Ireland as they went in the Ar-180, a lot of farmers and hunters had to get .22 hornet rifles instead and a lot of gun shops have stockpiles of .22 hornet rifle that no-one uses anymore

This is the problem. You get all the guns ammunition and power in the world. But you will not use it. You'd rather let yourself get destroyed, just so you don't have to use it.
It's one of the most firearm influential designs out there, a majority of short stroke piston guns on the market are AR-18 derivatives. You mentioned the G36 already, but the Scar, Aug, Bren, F2000 and B&T APC series (among others) are also derivatives of the AR-18.
@@TheMikeTB Yeah the British were quite a bit late to the NATO 5.56 party, probably because they realized what a piece of worthless shit the AR-15 platform is, but also because their design team is primarily English, and there's only 5 of them, and you would quickly find 2 of them murdered, and 2 more gang-raping the 5th one (Wales joke) but nonetheless, stealing German WW2 tech was always a viable option, but apparently the constant cycle of refreshing losses on the design team with new recruits, it seemed to lead to a mathematical feedback loop wherein each subsequent generation of death incidents would spur on the subconscious telepathical panic broadcast (we think this is related to the sensation of "your life flashes before your eyes") and at least some of the neurological pattern data would be uploaded to people within 8th z-wave range resulting in the 2 replacements becoming aware and emotionally responding to the news that the English are murderers and rapists, then passing that knowledge again with the TPB, and again, and again, and again, quickly leading to the 2 replacements having an enormous rage and superhuman will with an extraordinary capacity for violence, and as the 2 murdering rapists were aging and growing weaker, the 2 replacements would gain the upper hand, this entire process only took 3 minutes and 18 seconds, the balance of power would be equalized and then briefly tip into favoritism due to the unique astrological positioning of Mars that month, and the resulting TPB from the repeatedly dying old ones would result in a perfectly aligned Z-wave collision of supreme being energy, which would instantly give birth to a cosmic entity known as the Provisional Irish Republican Army UP THE RA

I own an AR180 with an original 2.75 x scope marked Armalite. I have "converted" several standard AR/NATO magazines and CHANGED THE FOLLOWERS to newer anti-tilt ones, I have had no feed problems. That was a 40 round mag in the video, more prone to problems. I find that the folding stock is a great design; I have had no problems with mine. The Barrel is a 1:12 twist and loves 55 gr. bullets 62 gr. works ok ,no key holing at 100 yards but I wouldn't run any heavier bullets . The piston gas system is flawless, clean and simple to clean. The bolt is similar to any AR 15 but not interchangeable. There is No interchangeability with AR15s on anything with the AR180. These rifles were made by Armalite in Costa Mesa California, Sterling in England and Howa in Japan. Another Piston operated AR style rifle is the Tiawanese T-91 those built uppers are still sold in the US by Wolf of Wolf Ammo and they work well also. Brownells has an upper based on the AR180 that is the most recent adaptation that they have developed. The video didn't really do the 180 much justice..IMO but Thanks anyway.

Brandon, Stoner went with a short stroke gas piston because he found himself in the bizarre situation on not being legally allowed to use the DI system that he had invented because Armalite had sold the patent to Colt in 1959. 0.55 The 50.cal is actually pretty accurate. "The Armagh Sniper" as its known, was a sniping campaign in South Armagh. They obtained a 50.cal BMG from either the US or Libya and would sit in a small armoured car and fire out of a modified rear window with a hatch. It was fairly successful in terms of killing british soldiers and draining morale in the area.
There were rumors one of Barrett's employees was sympathetic to the IRA. The model that they preferred was the model 95 bolt action bullpup because it was cheaper and shorter making it easier to fire from the trunk of a vehicle. One famous hatchback that they used had a giant steel plate across the back with a firing slit for the 50.
@@crazysilly2914 All you need is an old hatchback, some 1/2 inch steel plate and dad's old gas welder to repurpose a car for guerrilla warfare, you dunce. The only one talking about manufacturing is you.
The front pin is actually a pivot pin, just like in the AR15. There's a window at the back of the receiver set, above the stock shank, to push the recoil plate/rod assembly forward which disengages the upper from the lower to pivot down/forward. Many will use a bullet nose to do this but anything else similar would do.
The AR180 was featured in a lot of cop shows of the 1970s as the bad-guy's rifle. Even "sniper" bad guys. In fact, growing up on those shows, I really figured random, roof-top snipers and spectacular car crashes would feature much more heavily in my life. ;)
There was an episode of "SWAT" where the bad guy had an AR18 and they made a big ass deal about how much more deadly it was than the team's M16s because it had a (gasp) FOLDING STOCK. TV has always been fucking anti-gun.

I did a paper on the AR-180 for my English class in college. Teacher was a huge local history buff and turns out Armalite was making AR-180s not too far from our school in the 60s.
As I was reading this I was expecting you to say your kind old Irish teacher was very familiar with the AR-180 due to him being an IRA fugitive hiding out in an American high school
We had an AR-180 in the '90's. We found it very reliable. We didn't have any of the problems you're having. It was also designed to be a cheaper rifle than the AR-15, hence all of the stamped parts. The quality of the rifle was very good.
What you described with the sight and the merging of the vision fields? In basic our drill sergeants made us shoot with the covers on the front of our CCO's... Because it trained us to keep both eyes open, and we could still engage targets accurately. Pretty neat, and a good way to establish a good habit.
That sight works just like the RCO scope marines use. They are trained to shoot with both eyes open at closer ranges. It's weird at first but it works very well. Same concept for the monocle NVGs
@@oxide9679 Are you maybe thinking of the PVS-7? It had two occular lenses that shared the image from one objective lense/image intensifier. The PVS-14 is a monocle and no one I know has ever had a problem with them. I used one in the service and own one as well.
Fun fact, that occluded scope technique works on any scope with a red illuminated reticle, so if you have fixed/high power scope you want to use (i.e. ACOG), you can keep both eyes open for close quarters action.
For someone like me who.. my right eye looks straight and my left eye looks to it's left, somehow I don't think this will work. I have to use one eye with irons or standard red dot lol.
@@W0DAN88 Depends. Shotguns and rifles are generally easy to get if you say its for hunting. Semi-auto shotgun mag tubes are restricted to only fit 2 shells if its for hunting, making you being able to only shoot 3 shots without reloading, pump action shotguns dont have mag restrictions oddly enough. Hand guns are harder to get, but you can get some revolvers easier if its for hunting raccoon dogs for example. TLDR; yes and no, stupid regulations exist for the guns also. Being able to get a gun permit for hunting, reguires you to have a hunting license, which can be acquired by taking a course that includes gun safety, hunting laws, learning to identify animals etc and then passing the final exam. Taking the course is not necessary but its advised, but you can do the final exam straight away also and its enough for getting a hunting license if you pass the test. Sorry for this long and cryptic answer, I'm still half asleep.
As a Malaysian from South East Asia, I wish I had a 2nd amendment... I would settle for bolt action and revolvers if my country doesn't allow those M16/M4 stuff.

Hey Brandon, the plastic furniture that was "made by Mattel" was actually for the early production batches of XM16E1's that were used in the Vietnam War. I'm not sure how this myth wound up being transferred over to the AR-180, but it certainly isn't true for this weapon.
i think it came from the earlier nicknames for the original M16's that were fielded in Vietnam, one of them being "Mattel 16". i guess ppl didn't really get their facts right and it grew to the AR-180
@jemangecul It could very well be a mix of the two, with the later M16's that were issued retaining that nickname due to also being made with plastic furniture. Combine that with earlier stories of M16 grips or handguards that had "Made by Mattel" stamps on them, and that's how a (relatively) modern myth gets born.
The red dot made me think, when i was a kid and my dad taught me to shoot (w/ AK and mosin carbine) I always shot both eyes open with ironsights and I STILL swear by it. Basically a 3point version of a "2point" occluded sight.

Two things here. First, and purely in terms of aesthetics, this thing is like the M16 and FAL had a beautiful baby. Second, and something I JUST learned thanks to this, the occluded eye gunsight is what's on the Rebel blaster (DH-17 for my fellow nerds) in Star Wars! Always wondered why it had a clear front end with a red fiber in it.

The mistake of the AR-18 was that they tried to make it too cheap. People looked at it, said 'this is cool, but for a little more I can have an M-16/AR-15 and those are made NICE. Then they wanted a pistol and copied the AR-18. It's the most successful failure in history because of all the copies.
The weapon selection they had at the time was quite impressive, from surplus WW1 and WW2 guns from all over, to newish US firearms (eg the barrets) smuggled M60s and M2 browings,Mp-5s and Uzis, FN Fals from raided UK bases, AK's from Chinses to Yugo, RPGS and DShKas from Soviet satellite states and even Strela Manpads.

@tetraxis3011 They told the workforce that they were being made redundant while they were producing the A1s, so the workers put the minimum effort into production. It's not their problem after the contract is finished.

A lot of years ago, I ran across some VZ-52's, mostly parts that once were imported. I built my own version of the "ar-180" using the annular piston design and some stock metal parts from Lowe's and have a very smooth operating and reliable lightweight rifle based on the 52 design. You should showcase the VZ's sometime in your videos, it's a truly innovative concept and quite reliable in my experience. A good friend of mine has a 180 which kind of inspired my build experience with piston driven rifles, the 52 gas system really simplifies the build for those who own a lathe and machine shop. It's nice and simple and low profile. Good mags and 300 blackout function very well in my rifle. I've been shooting this round for quite a few years now, and I really like it. I've got a red-dot mounted on the aluminum tube with a nice square bolt carrier. Love your videos, don't quite understand the "white claws" but to each his own.
For some reason its illegal to hunt in PA with an AR15 UNLESS you buy a bolt conversion kit. I have no idea why that makes a difference lol. Being it’s a modified AR15 mag, you might be able to use the Magpul anti-tilt followers for GI mags. Not sure how much of the mag was modified but the followers are cheap enough to try it
9:22 Fun Fact: If you own a normal red-dot/holographic sight, you can experience the same effect by looking through the sight and focusing your eyes onto a nearby surface instead of the reticle, then covering the front lens with your hand. Might take practice to get your focus right, but it's an neat sensation.
For some people that can’t focus properly on a red dot I’ve been told you can flip down the front cover or cover the front of it to “train” urself to see it properly
indeed it does work. its funny, if i paid attention to the target, it worked properly, but if i payed attention to the dot itself, my brain would use mostly information from the other eye and my vision of the target would go black, despite my eyes still being focused down range.
I remember going to the armoury in Catterick Infantry Training Centre (British Army Infantry Training Centre) in 2014 and seeing a stockpile of those things in a cage. They were all captured off of killed and captured fighters in Ireland. Since Game of Thrones was still new, the joke was that they'd be melted down into the Queen's new "iron throne".
I had a “Sterling” variation, and it was ok, then I got a AK, which prompted me to keep the better of the 2, and I now am a AK/SKS supporter. You have the scope mount & optic(if I spent my time panning for gold in my garden I could find my weight in gold before I would find the ar180 optic set up at a gun show!) but the ease of getting a (vast variety) scope mount + optic is also a game changer. To add to your story I read somewhere that the IRA bought parts, and all the stamped assay’s were flats, which they then bent and welded, also they built stems, Mac 9’s etc…anything you could build in a garden shed. And if you’ve ever watched Sons of Anarchy…why would Cali bikers import gun kits from Ireland…when they can get excellent Mexican AK’s (to any counterfeit pattern with or without markings)just over the border?
Great description of the Occluded Eye Sight. This explains why I've never been able to shoot with them. I have a astigmatism that prevents the merging of the eyes if they are seeing 2 different things. I can concentrate on one image and the other just drifts off to the side and won't play because it's being ignored. On the plus side, it allows me to use scopes with both eyes open.

Hey Brandon, a lot of high-capacity steel mags(30-round curved) will benefit from a follower swap out. I used to have several units of steel Lancer brand Ar 15 40-rounders. I replaced the stock followers, with the Magpul anti-tilt followers. Replacing them solved 85% of the feeding problems. Like the follower jam/ magazine ammo dumping in the video. Also, you might try the new follower springs, esp if the magazine is been in use older than three years. Glyn Bindon promoted the oeg sight. Later developed into the Trijicon ACOG. Also one could say the AR 18 is an American AK. Cheap to manufacture, easy to use, and cost-effective.
There are SO many similarities between the AR-180 and the AR-7. The dual recoil springs, the charging handle retaining system, the bolt carrier, and of course; the "build it as cheap as possible" mentality. Hmm, the AR-7 also had mag issues with the stock steelies, too.

9:06 if anyone has a red dot and is curious about an occluded eye gunsight, you can recreate it. Just put some painters tape on the front side of your red dot, so you can still see the dot and nothing beyond it. Look at a target with both eyes and you'll get the same effect.
Also for anyone having trouble with the 'both eyes open' thing, tape the front of the dot and dont remove it until you get used to it. It's a decent way to force someone to adjust.
I thought that was the common way of using a red-dot optic i.e both eyes open while shooting. Might aswell use irons if having one eye closed, but even those can be functinal with both eyes open.
That's why the aimpoint T2 lens caps have a clear window on the back cap and a solid black cap up front. If you need the gun and don't have time to pop the caps, you can still use it as an occluded sight.
Unless you have a broken brain like myself. They tried this during a match stage (put the rifle through a port that blocks the scope, but you can still see on the sides). I hit about 15' left or right. I am fully ambidextrous though, write, shoot, tools, everything I can do with either hand. As I don't have a dominant side, my brain can't ever decide and shit gets real messy if I don't have an eye closed.

"I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying it happened." Literally the job of every history teacher, and should be on all of their walls.

The AR-18's most lasting impression was inspiring the designs of many other modern rifle's operating systems that would come after, such as the G36
It's one of the most firearm influential designs out there, a majority of short stroke piston guns on the market are AR-18 derivatives.
You mentioned the G36 already, but the Scar, Aug, Bren, F2000 and B&T APC series (among others) are also derivatives of the AR-18.
So is the Howa Type 89

And slightly ironically the British SA80, they used captured Irish AR18's as a very heavy inspiration for the development.
@@TheMikeTB Yeah the British were quite a bit late to the NATO 5.56 party, probably because they realized what a piece of worthless shit the AR-15 platform is, but also because their design team is primarily English, and there's only 5 of them, and you would quickly find 2 of them murdered, and 2 more gang-raping the 5th one (Wales joke)
but nonetheless, stealing German WW2 tech was always a viable option, but apparently the constant cycle of refreshing losses on the design team with new recruits, it seemed to lead to a mathematical feedback loop wherein each subsequent generation of death incidents would spur on the subconscious telepathical panic broadcast (we think this is related to the sensation of "your life flashes before your eyes") and at least some of the neurological pattern data would be uploaded to people within 8th z-wave range resulting in the 2 replacements becoming aware and emotionally responding to the news that the English are murderers and rapists, then passing that knowledge again with the TPB, and again, and again, and again, quickly leading to the 2 replacements having an enormous rage and superhuman will with an extraordinary capacity for violence, and as the 2 murdering rapists were aging and growing weaker, the 2 replacements would gain the upper hand, this entire process only took 3 minutes and 18 seconds, the balance of power would be equalized and then briefly tip into favoritism due to the unique astrological positioning of Mars that month, and the resulting TPB from the repeatedly dying old ones would result in a perfectly aligned Z-wave collision of supreme being energy, which would instantly give birth to a cosmic entity known as the Provisional Irish Republican Army

There's a window at the back of the receiver set, above the stock shank, to push the recoil plate/rod assembly forward which disengages the upper from the lower to pivot down/forward. Hey Brandon, the plastic furniture that was "made by Mattel" was actually for the early production batches of XM16E1's that were used in the Vietnam War. I'm not sure how this myth wound up being transferred over to the AR-180, but it certainly isn't true for this weapon.
SCW? Good taste
i think it came from the earlier nicknames for the original M16's that were fielded in Vietnam, one of them being "Mattel 16". i guess ppl didn't really get their facts right and it grew to the AR-180
I enlisted in 75, many of our M-16's had Mattel furniture, it was kind of amuzing at the time.

A bread truck that delivers bread to shops they would have an open trailer and the it’s would mount heavy machine guns to them. Basically what’s know in the military as technical
I recall the tales as a child of my grandfather shooting black & tans during the Easter uprising.....he went on to join Sinn Fein....and my dad moved to Canada.
@@JOSHUAPT100 the IRA would pinch a unionist delivery van. sometimes killing the driver. they would then drive it to a unionist part of town. mostly a shopping airier. what we call a highstreet. they would then seeped up to about 70 mph and a guy in the back would spray the street with bullets. the idea was to kill civilians and stop people from shopping for food and so on. they would avoided shooting a troops like this. as on the one or two times they did the 'tail gunner' always got killed.
so the guy he met. was basically saying he tried to kill mums and kids just out doing a bit of shopping. he could never have been in one of the 'tail gun' attacks on troops or police as they all got killed. he could only have been trying to kill civilians in his attacks.
@@onlyhereforddebob8978 mate they never used heavy machine guns like that. the IRA only ever one or two of them. they always used them to shoot up police stations at range. tail gunners used AKs or SMGs.
Loved also seeing the Archer references and jokes used in combination with references and jokes about Irish rebel music and the IRA. The Archer TV series did the same thing. For example in the episode where Pam was kidnapped, and ceryl asked Cheryl for a bunch of money he mentioned that he borrowed it from his IRA and Cheryl confused the individual retirement account with the provisional IRA and asked what are they going to do kneecap you? Kneecapping was a popular punishment during the troubles by all the paramilitary organizations especially the provos and was usually done by shooting the My Little armalite through your knees
The original AR-180s are... spotty in terms of build and reliability, but PWS' BRN-180 is absolutely amazing and a great modern take on the original design. I love my 18.5, it's one of my go-to guns.
Mainly Sterlings. Apparently, Howas are the best.
Don't forget all the weapons and explosives USA sold and supplied them too
@HorizonGaming2013 to be fair the taliban got well stocked by USA in the 80s when they were fighting the Russians so no wonder they had the gear to fight back when Nato invaded based on a dossier full of lies. Gotta love Western meddling
Gaddafi helped em out quite a bit too.
There was a rumor that I've only heard about once and have never been able to find anything about, which said that the Russians sent 20 AN-94s to the IRA during the Troubles.... Big if true, but sounds to ridiculous to me.
infamous Czech VZ58's they used to brass up civilians with too

This is honestly one of my favorite vids that Brandon has ever done.
The skits are great, plus the AR 180 is such a badass looking rifle.
When I was a kidof about 7 or 8 a kid in my grandparents town got blown up by the IRA leaving an IED packed in a military torch outside a territorial army (reservist) base I will never forget the effect it had on my grandmother.
And where was this town
Fun fact: the AR-18/180 was licensed to Sterling Arms and influenced the SA80A1 series of weapons for the British army, these were then improved by H&K using the also AR18 derived G36 as its base.
How could the British mess up the SA80 so bad?
@tetraxis3011 They told the workforce that they were being made redundant while they were producing the A1s, so the workers put the minimum effort into production. It's not their problem after the contract is finished.
@@tetraxis3011it's like anything though. Work on its problems and it gets better, the SA80A2/3 are fantastic though

That's something you and the Loyalist agree on then. The only pro gun political parties in the UK or Ireland are the DUP and UUP. That's why hand guns and concealed carry permits are still a thing in Northern Ireland.
Never seen a bolt action AR before! Very interesting design!
lol nice
They sell single shot bolt operated AR15s in the UK
Uintah sells an interesting bolt action AR platform receiver.
You have obviously never been to Cali.
For some reason its illegal to hunt in PA with an AR15 UNLESS you buy a bolt conversion kit. I have no idea why that makes a difference lol. I THOUGHT it was because .223/5.56 was too underpowered to kill large animals, but then i found out about the bolt thing and was like "wtf, why does that matter?" lol. still havent looked up the answer yet haha
Im so glad that Brandon is still on this platform.

Fun Fact: If you own a normal red-dot/holographic sight, you can experience the same effect by looking through the sight and focusing your eyes onto a nearby surface instead of the reticle, then covering the front lens with your hand. Might take practice to get your focus right, but it's an neat sensation.
For some people that can’t focus properly on a red dot I’ve been told you can flip down the front cover or cover the front of it to “train” urself to see it properly
That explains the blacked out front lens caps aimpoint still ships. Never knew it was an actual style of dot
@twilightzone39 isn't that the Bindon aiming concept essentially?
Occluding the dot is actually a great training tool for learning how to acquire and maintain target focus.
indeed it does work. its funny, if i paid attention to the target, it worked properly, but if i payed attention to the dot itself, my brain would use mostly information from the other eye and my vision of the target would go black, despite my eyes still being focused down range.
I remember going to the armoury in Catterick Infantry Training Centre (British Army Infantry Training Centre) in 2014 and seeing a stockpile of those things in a cage.
I shoot everything both eyes open. Better, too.
you have to shoot with all three eyes open
My personal weapon was an XM16E1 by General Motors. We all heard the same tale, that the furniture was made by Mattel. It holds up pretty well.
The "mattel 16" myth was just old heads at the time commenting on how light and toy-like the new plastic furniture guns felt. There was never any credibility to it, fuddlore since day one
@@callsignapollo_ Yup. The closest it ever became to being the truth was John Wayne holding an actual Mattel M16 toy in a couple short scenes in The Green Berets

I always wondered why M16s or ARs weren't issued 40-round mags, now I know why
I went in the Army and there was nothing but the 20 rounders. Later we saw the 30s.
I have the feeling that the magazine shown was not made by a big proper manufacturer. If made properly, I doubt they'd have a problem.
Australia adopted a 40 round magazine for the AUG, same ammo type and I think same magazine dimensions, they do work, the issue with this magazine seems to be that it’s tilting the keeper in the magazine causing feed issues
@@larrywilson178320 rounders were used when my gramps was in Vietnam, afaik my dad was always issued 30s, he kept a lot of 30s in our house although it was quite illegal by the state law to keep them.
@@loganbaileysfunwithtrains606ah yea 40rnd mags? In the Irish army the extended mags were kept for the lmg version, then I don't think for peacekeeping duties we could justify 40rnd mags and the extra ammo that goes with it.
I regret selling off my 180 back in the early 80s. Never had the mag problems you were fighting. I remember using GI mags with a slot cut for the 180s mag catch. Silly dovetail scope mount was a PITA, but I remember having an optic on my baby back in the day. Stock rattled like a buzz worm!
The whole time you thought all the murals in Ireland/Northern Ireland were just badly drawn AR-15 or M4 rifles, but they’re actually considerably more accurate representations of the AR-18 / AR-180.

Yep! You nailed it!
30 rounds isnt high capacity, its standard capacity.
and new springs. You have it apart to do the followers, might as well do the springs too if they're original. They're cheap.
Only Brandon can put a whole new spin on the phrase" blow the back out", and actually make it even funnier
In Australia it means you fckd her that hard you blew her back out.
Is it the same for other countries?
There are SO many similarities between the AR-180 and the AR-7. The dual recoil springs, the charging handle retaining system, the bolt carrier, and of course; the "build it as cheap as possible" mentality. Hmm, the AR-7 also had mag issues with the stock steelies, too.
The AR-180 - the only gun that has more warcrimes on it's belt than the M16.

@@Glatidoz Correct, you do shoot red dots with both eyes open. But if you wanted to simulate what was described in the video, you can.
