You missed the Proctor Creek signs (one of which reads: "Proctor Creek. This is an urban creek and subject to sewage overflow contaminants. Do not play, fish or swim in creek," and I don't know the rest). "Life lesson: Don't call a Wendigo drunk." LOL "Tuff Stuff" poster. Worker Bunks. And the point chart on the whiteboard. Nice Wuthering Heights and Simpsons references! Tool Shed: nice place for shelter and also a crossbow upgrade!
So on secret number 2, in case you're having trouble with the jump Chozo does, you can jump on the weird platform thingies to raise another platform which makes a way easier jump.
9:30 - that switch resets the elevator on the wall, and you can jump on it couple times to raise the bright platform near the barrel , so access to the secret is way easier . i think thats one of the most advanced gzdoom tricks ive ever seen , and its amazing ,even thou totaly optional.
40:46 - The Cannibal Overseer also used explosive bolts in the other installments of Ashes, but you couldn't pick up their bolts after you killed them. :) I always thought this was missing in the previous Ashes games, and you should be able to pick up and use their crossbow, and now you can! ;)
3:27 if you stop and look at the otherside of redkey door gate you can see there's a pale woman in red dress, standing there menacingly. After you pick the key and go back to the gate, she's gone
its the ghost ex wife of walker who has been killed idk how . There are dialogue in junction with thee motel guy who said something like " im sorry for yout losse they torn appart her " or something
She is moved to the other part of the quarry, opposite to the crater - can be spotted with rifle scope. You will encounter her few more times in the game - i've spotted her in the roof of Choka Cola plant, just before You exit level. She can be also spotted in the Green Line on the arena before the mess with cannibals start and also in the security camera in the mall. Maybe in other places, these are the ones i was able to spot her. I was thinking we will finally spot her as a NPC in the basement of the Spire... but there is only her voice.
18:45 - Hillarious how you can just stand there in the doorway, and the Wendigos can't get in! Wendigo: "I'm the toughest, I'm the fastest, I'm angry! Oh no! A doorway! :("
Kind of reminds me of that one moment in Borderlands 2, where you and Claptrap are about to storm Handsome Jack's complex, and Claptrap is hyping up a storm, only to suddenly turn around and go: "Stairs?! NOOOOOOOOOOOO"
I've noticed that _Hard Reset_ emphasizes stealth more then _2063_ or _Afterglow._ At the very beginning Walker talks about not making noise, so as not to attract the empties, then Asshole the Trader advertizes the silencer, and at the start of this level General cautions us against making too much noise. And I think those wendigo encounters were designed primarily with stealth in mind. The garage encounter (11:50) is the most obvious example -- the wendigos, clearly visible, are sitting in a corner, minding their own business, and not obstructing your progress in any way (or guarding any loot). It's less obvious in later encounters, but they are avoidable as well, as you've partially demonstrated (you can even get to that armor at 19:47 without engaging). In the second encounter wendigos are busy with the bandits, so you can just walk past them (and they have no way of reaching you once you get into the garage). So the only time you have to fight a wendigo is in the first encounter (which on Survivor is only a single wendigo, that goes down after two double barrel shots). In other words, it's an easy level, so long as you don't kick the wendigo's nest. If that's the expression.
The way I see it, engaging wendigos is an evolution from the crowbar tango we are used to perform with the cannibals. You have to set the rhythm and not let them set theirs, know when to give a step forward and the exact moment to step back and blast them in the face. It also helps when you manage to lure them into narrow and straight places like tunnels because that cripples their movement pattern at least a bit. Now, this may be unintentional from the devs part, but I feel like the wendigos are designed this way to prepare you for the big events up ahead if you know what I mean. On the other hand, on apocalypse no one would blame you if you chose not to engage them to save up on ammo. Finally, another note to add is that people shouldn't underestimate the pistol's hollow point rounds, they make more damage and are more useful than you'd think.
Oh yes, this map's challenges, the ammo scarcity and the wendigos. I definitely learned a lot of things you need to do in Hard Reset with this map: the weapon-swapping techniques on the wendigos with a mixture of a few ammo rounds pistol, boltcaster, shotguns, and military rifle each; and definitely the knowledge of switching fire modes with the pistol and boltcaster. So at my skill level, I play on Arcade (Ultra-Violence equivalence), with the advantage of a few more resources and less damage taken (and for some reason by the devs' decisions, a few enemies less now in Hard Reset, which is different from the previous Ashes works in which Arcade and Apocalypse had the same number of enemies). Even then, I had a lot of problems with the wendigos in my first playthrough. I would say their high health is the biggest annoyance, because of the ammo scarcity and there's almost no room for many missed shots if you are going for 100% kills. The end of the map is fun though, it's very satisfying to use the crossbow with explosive bolts on the cannibal overseers.
@@Chozo_Ghost I feel some of the new enemies are bit too "bullet spongy"/numerous on the higher difficulties. They also have few obvious weaknesses that you can exploit.
Wendigos are scary af. They killed me in 3 or 4 hits with 100 health and 200 armor. I'm not 100% sure, but I think there are more wendigos on apocalypse than easier difficulties.
It is possible to crowbar the Wendigos to death too, especially if there is just a single one, doing the "bug dog boogie" (hit them, then retreat before their attack animation finishes). It's risky though! :)
Regarding wendigos' tankiness, it's really a matter of resources management and level design: first off, they're mostly optional - cool, stealth mechanics; given kills are tracked and 100% kills is a legit way to play, the game should give me enough resources to kill them all in a level; it's then a matter of world building, diegesis and overall feeling how bulky you want them to be (or really how fast, how risky to take on, in general how you want to tune the different approaches the player can use to interact with them, in case of DOOM TCs it's mostly numbers). Easy solution: place a bunch of ammo and meds right after any combat encounter with them, so if you skip them you gain nothing and you lose nothing but if you engage you get something back, maybe even something more if you are really good or really careful. This does not mean harder solutions (like remaking some maps, not entirely but in part) could not benefit the overall experience more, however I agree fidgeting with numbers is generally a very time and energy efficient solution.
least favorite map of hard reset for me. The music cuts off in the sewer section and never returns once re-emerging on street level. Final 1/3 of the map is near in complete silence without even background ambient noises like wind etc to fill the dead air

Question for you, Chozo: why did you use shells and bolts and pistol ammo on Wendigos, rather than hosing them down with the rifle like you did the Withered? I tested the exact reverse strategy on this map and it worked out extraordinarily well. Wendigos have no response to being chewed up by a wall of 5.56mm bullets, and Withered are slow so potshotting them with less powerful ammo types was extremely productive. That said, I know this was recorded on a much earlier build than the v1.05 I'm playing now.
Yeah, you answered the question in the second part of the comment lol. In the initial couple builds of Hard Reset, Wendigos had noticeably more health than they have now. You would have drained your entire supply of rifle rounds back then :P
@Chozo_Ghost Ah, noted. Good thing Vos made them a bit less spongy then - now one regular bolt and a mag of hollow points does the trick in silence. Later when you get the power upgrade for the boltcaster, you only need two regular bolts and a single shell for a finisher; too bad you only get 3 wendigoes after this map!
I think they also deal out more damage, too! Definitely a nice change, imo. I never was bothered that much with their speed or DPS, but their tankiness, pre-patch? Yeah, I wasn't fond of that at all lol. So nice to be able to play through this map on this difficulty without having to worry too much about my ammo supply when facing them! As long as you're accurate and don't panic, you'll be aight

yeah and the platform can be "reset" back to original position which is what the button is for

@@Chozo_Ghost Yes, the crossbow is one of the most interesting and fun new weapons imho.
Ashes's wendigo is definitely the deathclaw
But worse. Good luck punching these boys like you can deathclaws in Fallout.

24:02 Nice optical illusion here, reminds me of one of my favorite places in Thief: The Dark Project.
Cannibal Gladiator is somewhat less of a threat, as he often gets stuck on level geometry or in doorways.

Yeah hollow ammo can deal up to 48dmg per hit, while pistol round only 8-24

-54 HP & -36 Armor?! Damn, you were NOT kidding.,
And that's with a suit of armor that absorbs 50% damage, too!

easy to run yourself out of ammo killing Wendys, especially on apocalypse. gotta whack em
I tend to do that more whenever I play with saves lol. Fortunately there's ammo in absolute spades in MAP06
I ran out of ammo on that level during my first playthrough on Arcade difficulty. I got so angry I used the IDKFA-cheat! :D

Not optional in most of the encounters.
Nice way to handle wendigo, when I played this (first time) I ended with melee-fighting with few of them because of lack of ammo.
GG for deal the wendigo without saves 👍
