I can't believe over 13K watched and only 324 liked this video! You deserve way more feedback than that. So, thank you Will, your honesty and realism was much needed and appreciated.
I love how you express that your children are grown by saying "you fertilized them,... they're all grown". When my kids were all babies I couldn't see ever painting again... That started 15 years ago when my first child was born and ended 3 years ago when my third child entered grade school. I had patience and I kept my interests up in illustration by seeing all the new illustrated books at the library and studying them. I wasn't able to paint for years, but I was mindfully learning every time I read books to my children -- I would only bring home the best illustrated books and I think it has helped improve my eye as an artist. Thanks for this video and your many other videos. You're inspiring to me.
Thank you, Will for doing this, it really helps. I'm another example of a young man, 23yo. started arts around 10 yrs ago. I got to a certain level, pretty good for my young teen age. and then the inadequate education killed my artistic motivation and left just the dream hanging empty. now im trying to kill my counter-strike addiction. im really good at it but like you said, you have to prioritize and I chose not the be that guy. I want people to wow at my art and nothing else. time is ticking. now Im reviewing all the resources I have to get back to art and do it well. so thanks again and I really appreciate you doing the videos that you do!
Ivaylo Nikolov !!!!!!! what you just said! I'm becoming that person. studying animation and the motivation in this field is just ruined for me. I'm lucky I have illustration as my secret guilty pleasure and just happy to fully dive into it the moment I leave the school
thank you will, right now I am struggling to run freelance illustration career of mine, and this video literally saved my life! thanks for everything. you are generous. I love you so much. this was the one thing I desperately needed to relieve this huge amount of stress
Yet another great video full valuable tips. Thanks Will for your dedication to the illustration community. My two favorites, which I practice often now-a-days, is saying "No" and turning in assignments a day or two before the due date, even if I finished it a week earlier.
One of the things that I really enjoy of your vids beside the great content of your input, it is the honesty you expose your flaws , I sincerely appreciate this.....and appreciate all the tips you gave us.... Much thank you....
Great to hear your practical and inspirational thoughts, I look forward to the next video! Time management is a big deal for me at the moment, currently having to look for a regular job, teach art part-time, paint paintings and develop an illustration portfolio of work. So my thing is trying not to feel guilty about doing something I find relaxing and which will ultimately feed my soul.
Hey Will! I know this video is 3 years old but i just wanted to thank you for the words. Really enjoy your content, both how you expose your thoughts and the amazing art you create. Wish you all the best.
Thank you for this information, Will. This is fantastic and very helpful. A lot of new suggestions and also reinforcing a lot of what I suspected. Over 3 years after the fact, but still relevant. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your personal time management tips! I wish I had heard this decades ago. In the past I was a graphic designer (not real great at it, just average). Then I married and had kids, choosing to leave the working world to just be a mom, doing wall murals and decorative painting in my (very) spare time to feed the hunger to create. As for the technology and creative software available for designers/illustrators today, I lost probably 16 years! Now, at 52 years old, I wonder where the time went and what have I done to show for the college (art) degree I earned as a young person? This was really eating away at me! Two years ago I was fortunate to have cash to purchase a Mac, the CS5 software, and an Intuous tablet. I've taught myself how to take traditional painting skills to the digital level. I am excited about the opportunity to finally illustrate for a living, but still struggle with making the most productive use of my time. I think I'm finally finding my 'groove' and your video confirms that I'm moving in the right direction by avoiding distractions, and learning to value what's most important. I've watched all of your videos and each one is filled with great advice and wisdom drawn from your own personal experiences. You are very real! Thank you!!!!
Thank you for this! I just pestered Jake with a similar question so it was great to find this right away! Now I won't feel so guilty about hiring a house cleaner ;-) But seriously. Thank you so much. I really appreciate you taking some of that time to help the rest of us out.
I just found your channel and it's really motivational. I've only listened to several videos but will be checking out the rest. A lot of the things you mention are things I can really relate to. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Andrew Varh Especially the part about video games. God, that takes so much time and wasted too. It's been 6 months now since I touched a video game and it feels great.
I wake up at 3:30 am and start work at 5:00 Am and work until 3:30 pm. I but try to manage 2 hours of art practice on work days. Weekends are better for me, I manage to practice and relax long hours.
LOL, I have a to-do list as well. I started mine after watching a Jake Parker video and I have seen a lot of success in the time management perspective.
Hey Will! How’s it going man? I didn’t check out this vid before; it’s quite good such as many others of yours! :) I found real fun your description about your “Starcraft” game play fact. It made me laugh because it’s totally true! XD I faced those kind of situations many times when I was younger, even after having married… By fortune, I gradually stopped playing video games which, although I “love” them, and since I started watching videos and reading books about self-esteem and time management subjects, I currently consider them wasters of time, or as you accurately call: “dream killers”. Now I feel much more pleased spending time in my own projects! You’ve pointed out something quite important that I think all parents we face at least once in our life: little kids care! Definitely it’s a hard period for organize yourself, specially when your children are babies yet. But well, it’s part of life, and they have their reward as well, maybe in a different manner, but very enjoyable though. So you have to include them in your daily activities such as your projects. I think later on, if you’ve been a lovely and responsible parent it’ll pay off in the long run. I don’t care too much about spending time in figuring out how to solve certain problems; this is, learning how to do maybe house activities. I’m speaking from my own experience: at least they’ve taught me different points of views to do some works, like how much time and effort you can spend in a task and what kind of tools you need to accomplish it. However, I agree with you in: the less time you spend doing them to focus more on your projects, the better and faster the money will come to your business life. That’s a fact! Well, sorry again about the long text! As always, just wanted to share my thoughts to you and the rest of the people. :D Hope you have a great day! Blessings!
I don't play Starcraft, but I was addicted to watching korean games with english commentary. They were short (10-25 mins) escapades where I just had to shut off my brain and enjoy the skill at show. It's not as bad as it used to be, but every now and then I lose 2-3 hours of my life from watching these pro Starcraft games.
Thank you your advice is very helpful. I like your videos, entartaining myself and I listen to them while doing my first illustrated book. I am still a student of art. See you :)
Is there a way to get into one of your classes at UVU without being a major seeking student. I have a degree in Civil Engineering but would love to take a class
great messages and a relaxing voice to listen to. how about a radio job? there's the car guys for autos, what about the art guy for art related projects and careers?
Just uninstalled everything on my Xbox, laziness has been a real problem for me since starting my most recent unit in uni. I was much more productive in the last one, played less games too but but it’s got out of hand this unit.

Gave up games years ago... just can't stop, love'm, but I get addicted so easily - life suckers! Great vlog! :)

Tesla? I thought it was Einstein. Not sure Tesla could afford more than one suit and a couple of shirts.
