Merphy, I recommend you go watch "The Deeper Themes of Wano | Complete ARC ANALYSIS" by Mr Morj on youtube. It's a great breakdown of Wano's themes in the First 2 Acts. You can watch it because you've read up to this point.
"He is evil, he is terrible, he is ruthless, but he also dances, he's super groovy, and he's a dinosaur." This is the most One Piece sentence ever uttered.
Zoom, Zoom, Zoom, Zoom Zoom, Zoom, Zoom, Zoom Zoom, Zoom, Zoom, Zoom Zoom, Zoom, Zoom, Zoom If I get thinner, I'll be too popular So I don't get thinner, that's my type of FUNK!!! I may look chubby, but it's all muscle I can sing and dance, that's my type of FUNK!!!
Entire anime, entire other MANGA SERIES were born and ended in between the Zoro/Sanji split up and them reuniting here. It was epic for so many different reasons!!
a little fact to melt your heart: I believe Oda confirmed Yasuie is not Toko's biological father, he took her in and adopted her when she was little... so sad
@@adoniscreed4031 I get that something are kept away for the Vivre Cards but Idk this seems kinda important. Maybe he made it up after Yasuie's death already happened in the manga
The gag with Toko is that otoko means male, and she’s often called O-Toko so she jokes about not being a boy despite her name. Adding the O- prefix to girl’s names to show affection was a common practice in Edo era Japan, and that’s what Wano is based on.
Something that is easier to pick up on in the anime is that Toko speaks in the same meter as a rakugo. Rakugo is a traditional type of story telling usually comedic that's why when she first met Sanji and the others they couldn't help but laugh.
@@fictionjunkie I picked up on the Rakugo bit just because i happened to watch showa genroku rakugo, when it aired. Biig recommend if you're interested in what Rakugo entails
I have to say, many other One Piece RUclipsrs have battle manga brain and often get too wrapped up in powerscaling one piece characters that it's such a breath of fresh air that someone like you who's very new to manga but well versed in other literature can pick up on more of the ACTUAL story and themes going on with the characters in a new way. Always eye opening takes on characters others don't focus on as much cause they're too busy talking about a Strawhats combat feats lol
@@hhhfdsfs yeah Morj is another good example, when he takes the time to deep dive. But I think Merphy is able to pick up on stuff on her own first impressions like when she talked about Ashura and Kawamatsu, like no one else in the community I watch has given either the time of day like that, though I guess she has the advantage of being able to binge first read
you have to love Merphy saying "who is this hyogoro they're talking about, will he come into the story soon? anyway so Luffy is fighting in the ring with the old man named Hyogoro and-"
28:18 they did mention "hyogoro" and i dont know who he is... // 29:50 the old man... give me a moment to look at my screen again... hyogoro!. Lmao Merphy's memory is the best.
That meal ticket thing is a very important thing from Luffy, he doesn't want to be called a hero because that means he has to share the meat, and here he is, sharing his food.
That may be why that was said at the end of the prologue to the new world; their second romance dawn. Luffy may be selfish, but because he isn't against making friends with most people, he ends up feeling the need to protect them. It comes off as compassion in that way, giving him everything he needs to be truly heroic. Hyogoro is Luffy's friend, and he will share meat with his friends.
I think that's what Luffy's whole personality is about. Luffy is one of the most selfish (good guy) protag's I have seen, it's just that many doesn't perceive it as that because 99% of the time Luffy has 'morally good' goals. I think that's also why what you said isn't contradicting itself. A hero shares his food because he is expected to do that because he is a hero. But Luffy wants to share it when he wants to (even if that is always)...because that's what it means to be free.
@@asap4bri But selfish in the best way possible that he wants to be free, but also others be free. Why he empowers others if they are willing to fight to be free, he will support them. Also healthy that he doesnt see himself above others.
Just a fun fact: The only other times Luffy has ever offerred another person his food in the ENTIRETY of the series was in Little Garden and Alabasta and both were to Nami so that she wouldn't be upset. If you remember, Luffy's promise to Genzo (Pin Wheel Dude from Arlong Park) was that he would never take away Nami's smile and since then, he actively tries to keep her happy in his own way (even though more than half of the time he's scaring the hell out of her with the insanity that is his leadership). Its little moments like these where Luffy remembers these emotional details about his crew that make this series so great. Edit: Thanks for everybody in the comments for reminding about the other times hes offered people food. Needa keep an eye out for that in the rewatch
A subtle detail that I love about the Udon speech is how Luffy’s lack of hesitation to infect himelf, was ultimately due to him knowing that Chopper was there. For me, it was just another great moment, where Luffy displays the utmost amount of trust and faith in his crew, without having to think about consequences. Awesome review btw.
I think luffy sharing his food with hyogoro was some really clever/sneaky character development. You're right, typically when food is used to create bonds between luffy and other characters, it's the other characters feeding luffy. But then after having to save Tama who ended up poisoning herself in order to feed him, he is being more considerate of other peoples needs. He went from "I don't want to be a hero, heros have to share their meat" to someone who will share food without a second thought. Luffy is transitioning into a true hero, not just a protagonist.
I agree with most of what you said but I don't think he's being a hero or transitioning into a hero. I believe he is still selfish when it comes to food. The difference here is, Luffy has seen first hand what the situation in Wano is like and knows that, at least in this one place, he needs to be more considerate. As Merph has pointed out many times before, Luffy's emotional intelligence is outstanding. Prior to Wano, he would demonstrate this by saying the right words, not saying anything at all or by flat out punching someone. Here, he does it by handing out his food without a second thought.
@@isaiasramirez8224 SPOILERS So , if you've kept up with the theory community and Luffy's dreams beyond being Pirate King . You must have atleast realized that his dream apart from being King is to topple the Tenryoubito or something to that extent , IMO seems like what a hero would do
Nah bro, I think he wouldn’t mind helping in those future revolutions you just mentioned but I think his overall dream and why he even decide to set out to become the pirate king is much more simpler than that. Their are some more hints as to what it is in the chapters to come but as merphy hasn’t read them, I’ll leave it at that
Going from watching Merphy at the start of her one piece reviews not fully invested in the full plot or world completely to cosplaying perona and doing the laugh is testament to how life changing this story is!
With Yasuie it hurts more after Oda revealed in a SBS that he had adopted Toko and in a Vivre Card he had never eaten a smile fruit so all his smiles were chosen and not forced.
another reason not to underestimate the musician / bard in a story is... at some point, they are the ones who will keep the adventure alive through song and spread it around the world. sure "big news morgans" can do that for the moment, but information in songs can last for generations to come.
There’s some great episodes after thriller bark (I’m not sure if they’re canon or filler) that show brook getting accommodated with the crew. He mainly struggles to find his place but at the end of the episode the sun is setting and brook is playing a slow peaceful version of binks sake and everyone throughout the ship hears and relaxes. It shows that while chopper heals them physically brook is there to keep their souls healthy.
The thing about the bath scene that I think people always forget about is that it is a communal bath so sanji didn't have to be invisible to be in in same bath
@@nicsad1616 Yeah, i feel like people get so wrapped in "Sanji is a perv" they forget that there were other men in the bath and it was mixed bathing. And they overlook that Sanji 100% saved them from both Hawkins AND Drake 2v1
Oda actually hinted at the Smiles before timeskip. When Disco (the guy who ran the slave house) called Doflamingo, he said "we're in the age of smiles".
I love how she said his name multiple times then says, "they mention this hyogoro, I wonder who is" lol Tbf she said shes horrible with names but that was hilarious
The main point of Brook joining the crew was to have a musician. Luffy says that he wants to find a musician a lot in early One Piece, for example in chapter 2 as well as right before arriving at the Baratie (sea restaurant). So technically, Brook filled the role that Luffy wanted the most from the beginning.
yeah and each crew has roles. he's not basically the "swordsman" of the crew since it is Zoro's role which is also the "first mate", we have navigator, musician, doctor, cook, (not really a spoiler about jinbei since he already told it on WCI) helmsman, gunner or sniper, shipwright, and archaeologist. and maybe log keeper in the future?? (not a spoiler since everyone wants a log keeper in the crew). maybe, she can't feel brook since she's not watching anime. i dunno
Holy cow - I know Orochi was evil but the way you put everything into perspective in this review - makes me really realize just HOW evil Orochi is. What an amazing review! Can't wait for the next one! :)
That scene when Toko laughs at her father's death is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the whole series. And then just how relatable was Zoro's death glare at the capitol people who were saying that the laughing people are being disrespectful. My heart 💔😭
I was mad at both Zoro and Usopp at that scene. Zoro not being fast enough to stop the execution or at least prevent Toko from seeing her father being killed and Usopp for selling fake medicine
Small correction. CP0 is not associated with CP9. They are two different organizations with two different purposes(though similar) and two different "people" they answer to. Very important to not confuse that moving forward, I made the same mistake early on.
the way I understood it was that CP0 is the organisation that *directly* works for the world nobles while CP9 was the most secret CP that only did covert operations. I also think after Enies Lobby there is no CP9 anymore and that's simply the reason why all remaining members were relocated.
Kawamatsus flashback was so tragic. He was basically starving so hiyori could eat, then after she leaves he ends up with the fox, who he also ends up starving for so he could eat and was also setting up for the raid simultaneously, and finally got caught stealing food which he probably wasn’t even going to eat much of anyways, and then he is thrown in prison and had to eat poisoned fish for years waiting for kinemon and them to come back. And he did not waver. What a legend.
Fun fact : In a SBS, Oda recently draw a version of Killer if he had eaten a succefull Smile Fruit and turn into an animal and... hem... Let's just say Killer dodged a bullet.
Learning why the fruits were called smile is one of my all-time fav op moments. It's just so awful and tragic and every time I reread it, I cry. Something about Wano just hits differently.
Big Mom's amnesia came to confirm what you said about Linlin's Eternal Childhood, in your latest Whole Cake video. In that memoryless moment, she returned to a state of pure innocence without interference from Carmel or any trauma, she was at her true essence, a gentle child who just wants to share what's good. I believe you are still very upset about the wedding cake event 😂 it's normal, but Big Mom is a very complex character and a unique antagonist. She's not just a villain to be scared of, she allows Oda a more comedic and freer approach, and that makes her an amazing character. In addition, her comic interaction with Luffy, the emotional bonds she created with Tama and, of course, the fact that she took down one of Kaido's strongest soldiers with just 2 blows, were actions very well addressed with her arrival at Udon, caused by amnesia. So I don't think it was a bad thing, it was a huge development for the character, not just a narrative convenience. Anyway, your comments are great, I like to follow it. I hope you continue with this magnificent work.
41:56 I shed a tear as well not gonna lie. This panel hits u even harder when u realize that the last time Zoro and Sanji were together in the same place was in the beginning of Dressrosa(2013). Basically 6 years with no Sanji and Zoro moments.
@@Felipera_ Sanji and Zoro haven't seen each other for almost a month and a half in the one piece world, 44 days if my calculations are correct. That's from Dressrosa till Wano.
The last time Sanji and Zoro interacted was in Chapter 722 which was released on 30 September 2013. It took the readers 6 years to see them again on the same panel
There is one thing that I find particularly interesting from Big Mom’s amnesia phase, which I do think works. While she’s eating about there being none of the food being left in the pot, and it seems as though it’s another classic hunger pang, it’s revealed that she’s annoyed she couldn’t get any because she wanted to share it with the people who fed her. There’s a lot about Big Mom which subtly hints at some genuinely good motives behind her cruel and twisted ways. This alongside the reveal that she wishes everyone could sit, equally, at the same table and eat together, as well as her desire to make a land where everyone lives equally regardless of race or status as an object imbued with a soul, shows that there is a great deal of nuance behind that character that I really cannot wait to see.
Yh I hear u but I think so far to where I'm at she's the most miss handled character in one piece so far, they treat her like some dumb inconvenience rather than an emperor, she deserves better
Imagine waiting 5-6 years to see Zoro and Sanji togheter again and you get that panel with both of them! That chapter I think trended on twitter for a few days
Have you noticed that Kaido's top crewmembers have the names of playing cards (Jack, Queen, King) but also Mingo was "Joker" and his crew were Diamante, Trebol, Corazon and Pika... And now... Big Mom becomes O-Lin (also read as All In). Do you think that was some foreshadowing of the alliance?
the amensia thing is well known between the fandom that it was a bad aproach til this day. But it also comes with a very interesting set up that I can't expand on right now. Oda is trying his best to shine light on the different layers of big mom as a character(amesia big mom, wedding cake big mom, etc.) but the problem is that big mom's action can sway an arc to a completely different direction to the point that Oda couldn't help but give plot armour to the important characters of the story.
I think it's very sad that to this day people think it's bad. When personally I had zero issues with it, in fact I loved it. It made big mom's character way more fascinating than she already was. It offered a lot of character moments for her now and later. So yeah; this one thing I'll never understand within the community. But then again, everyone is entitled to have their own opinion. (I just like big mom way too much. The yonko are way too good. Lmao)
True, and this is also a testimate to Big mom as a pure monster. People actually loose memory when submerged for a long time. This is a real affliction and the fact that she LIVED just shows how powerful she is. The loss of memory still shows she is human. I get the hate because of Sabo, but this time it does actually work for the moment.
@@iz_pz8910 I think it’s a knee jerk reaction from seeing it poorly implemented in other media. But honestly people should have trusted Oda is track records to good to doubt so easily.
I ain't mind it much, it was always clear the woman's mind not right. But I guess it also depends on how you feel about amnesia as a plot point in general, which I'm noticing many ppl have innate negative thoughts towards but I personally just don't feel anything about it lol
The process of getting stronger and training is a very cliche' tropes in anime/manga, some could make a whole arc out of just a training. Oda on the other hand doesn't like to draw a training arc for an instance the 2 years training after Marineford Oda just skip that entirely and flashed back when it needed to while some other mangaka could write this whole thing for years. Now when Luffy need to get stronger Oda decide to incoporated "training" with an actual storyline and made it more dynamic by having Luffy being capture and then he learning all new technique through that.
Yea seeing CP9 use Soru made him think of Gear 2nd. And this is speculation in my part but I think him having use that giant golden ball to punch Eneru possibly gave him the idea of Geard 3rd.
Na timeskip training arcs never really get shown. U usually only learn the basics of what they are doing and other stuff is shown in flash backs. Other than that ur right
You are right! Same goes for Zoro - notice that most of the time, he's been running with just 2 swords. Just like in Luffy's case in the prison, Zoro got nerfed so that it was harder for him to fight the opponents since he loves 3 swords style.
And the more he starts to respect someone, the closer he gets to their real name For instance Cry Baby slowly evolving to Shirioshi Which says a lot about Jaggy doesnt it? TraGuy is stuck probably cause Luffy can't say Trafaulgar
Speaking of leadership, a few things worth noting; 1- Back in Alabasta, we meet a royal (Vivi) who pretty much already possesses the qualities of a great leader, so much so, we could argue she teaches Luffy so much about leadership.... Fast forward to Luffy (at this point already proven himself a great natural leader) meeting Momo ( a royal who wants to be a great leader, but feels he is unable to do so/doesn't know how to) and now it is Luffy teaching Momo how to be a great leader (leadership being another theme of the Yonko Saga as a whole) and it all starts in Zou with Luffy calling Momo out. Now if you look at the panel where Momo "walks out", after Luffy's speech, it's because he is running away from Luffy. Luffy does the speech, Momo and them are hiding, then Luffy calls Momo out for hiding, and throws a rock at him, and in Momo running away, he walks into the crowd of prisoners, giving them the push they need. 2- Also, I wanna point out that this is the first time we see Luffy galvanising a crowd of people (again, the theme of leadership in the entire saga with Big Mom, Kid, Law, Kaido, Luffy, Old man Hyo being a fallen leader, Orochi, Yasui, and Oden, whom we've (read you've) heard so much about) and I think this is another great thematic thread... -Law exchanges his life for his crew, and how he gets mad when Shinobu doubts his crew -How torn Kid is about Killer, and how the closest he gets to being broken is when his crew is harmed There's a lot I could say, but in order to possibly avoid spoiling, leadership is a great thematic thread here Lastly, YOU ARE AMAZING!!! GREETINGS ALL THE WAY IN South Africa ... And I'm not sure how far off this is, but when the USA daylight savings thingy happens again, is it possible for you to say? 😅😅.. Took me a while to find out your videos moved from 14:30 to 15:30, South African time... I plan my Friday study break around them😅😅😅
There are so many parallels from the alabaster saga, where Luffy was immature or lacked responsibility now the roles are reversed when we see his interactions with momo and tama.
Keep the nicknames! As someone who struggles with names, especially in Wano, I know exactly who you mean when you say "swampy", "princess crybaby" and "tom" Also you can probably make 2-3 videos out of act 3 to this point. Its so dense
Watching Punk Hazard after having seen Wano, and especially paying attention to Kinemon's and Momo's behavior, just hits different. I just love that Oda sticks to natural, human psychology. Characters in OP do not behave in a certain way just because the author wants them to. They behave like that because of the past events that had been shaping them. Damn... OP is truly a masterpiece.
Fun fact, when you were taking about the samurai disguising themselves with a towel over their head around 27:00, that is the typical Japanese portrayal of a robber/highwayman. So even though we, the audience, obviously know who’s behind the disguise, it’s kinda like their equivalent of a ski mask. Can’t wait to see your reviews once you’re all caught up. As DEEPLY into this series as I am, I learn something new from other RUclipsrs every week. The OP community is amazing and there’s almost always enough content to keep you entertained between chapters.
What I love about the scene with Zoro and Sanji protecting Toko, is that it’s also the first time they’ve seen each other since the crew split up at the beginning of Dressrosa.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Blackbeard has ever said that he wanted to be the King of the Pirates. We don't really know what his true ambitions are.
Every pirate on the seas is trying to become the Pirate King. Assume they are until stated otherwise. The only one who didn't want to was Whitebeard, that we know of.
Merphy: “They mentioned this man called hyogoro, I wonder who he is and how he will play out in the story” Also Merphy: “So anyways, Luffy and old man hyogoro are fighting together”
Yoo i think Luffy's aggressive eating habits are the product of him growing up in what was essentially a very big and a very physical family where you had to compete with your siblings to get the best bits first. My father was the youngest of 5 kids and he eats incredibly fast even to this day. And recently i met a guy who basically inhaled an adult fist sized bao bun and turns out he's also one of 7 siblings. And the lack of food in the rest of Wano may have tempered Luffy's appetite and made him hyper-aware of the issue which so far in One Piece hasn't been a big problem (except in sanji's backstory).
Actually his eating supports his rapid metabolism which causes rapid regeneration and is from Garp's Super Soldier training Its why he recovers fast resting, faster sleeping, and regenerates near instantly after eating a lot of food such as eating Biscuits vs Cracker, a shit load of Moochi vs Katakuri, and a lot of Moochi dongos in Udon to train in Udon
Both answers from these comments give so much context to Luffy's character, not only his background having an impact on his habits now as an adult but also a technical understanding on his powers. Thank you both, as writer I think I can use these.
Act 3 is gonna be an amazing read for you. Chapters were basically trending every couple weeks on twitter. Act 3 has to be the best weekly reading experience for me since I've been reading One Piece[10+ years at this point 😁]
Interesting information, that you should probably take in consideration is that One piece was inspired by Dragon ball - another really popular manga, that was published in 80-s. What should be important here, is that Dragon ball is martial arts manga, where fights play the biggest role and characters growing as fighters is very important. So in one of his earliest interviews Oda said basically that if he made One piece a fighting manga with deep explained power system and fight choreography, it would just lose to Dragon ball. So instead he concentrated on narrative and emotions behind fights. I think it was a good trade off
Uhhhhh this isn't necessarily true since dragon ball ended before one piece began. Also oda wasn't just inspired by dragon ball and is reason for doing things is mostly just how he likes to write While dragon ball is about self improvement through battle one piece is more about adventure Plus dragon ball ended in 95 which was 2 years before the release of one piece
@@user-gk6nt5gi5n how does dragon ball ending before one piece affect it being an inspiration for oda? luffy is like a better version of goku, and oda fanboys over DragonBall when asked. it's definitely one his main inspirations, alongside another story called Mr slump.
@@TheSynergy40 there are many influences to one piece oda has said that dragon ball was one of his main inspirations to draw manga and has influenced his manga to an extent however he has never had an interview saying the stuff u claim so ur spreading misinformation which is why I commented And the other manga is Dr slump akira toriyamas previous work the fact that u don't know the name leads me to believe u don't know what ur talking about
@@user-gk6nt5gi5n just look up toriyama oda interview, youtube isnt letting me post it also toriyama being the author of slump is something that slipped my mind, because I dont care that much about all of toriyama works, but oda DOES.
I don't think Merphy would even like Dragon Ball One Piece is mostly planned out and Oda just makes the pieces fit, while Dragon Ball is gag manga turned into a martial arts manga written as it went along(characters and their powers completely forgotten, Chichi was a princess meaning Gohan and Goten should be princes, Launch doesn't even exist anymore, tails became recesive traits). And I do know that Oda fanboys about it but it is obvious that One Piece was inspired by the early Dragon Ball with Goku and Bulma as kids just going on an adventure(inspired by Journey to the West), instead of the alien stuff which people mostly associate with DB. DB, while the reason for both Naruto and One Piece which inspired MHA and other manga, just doesn't have the interesting concepts and intriguing character details the 'newer' shounen do, Piccolo and Vegeta being the exceptions. DB is Merphy's least favourite thing about One Piece, over and over again. Except Mr Satan who turned into Buggy
Not sure if you know this, but Oda confirmed that Yasuie never actually ate a smile. He just forced himself to laugh in solidarity with the people of Ebisu town. Elevates his character even further imo
Hyogoro is pronounced like h-yo-goro. It's like when the boys come together and say "yo" as a greeting. You basically just put a hard H in front of the yo.
@@rcookie5128 Hyogoro is how you should write it in English, Hiyogoro is how most people would end up pronouncing it just because they say it quickly and it just happens naturally that the "i" sound is added there.
@@rcookie5128 ye that's true. tbh i have not been watching the Anime as tightly as i used to, only the Manga, but one of the reasons i still follow the Anime is to know how characters sound like and how their names(and names of places\things) are pronounced correctly, although watching anime for 15 years i pretty much know how to pronounce a Japanese name or word if i see it written in English or hear it once in an Anime. Merphy is new to Manga, doesn't watch the Anime, and her "job" you could say is very tightly related to the English language which often pronounces things weirdly, compared to how it should be pronounced based on how it is written.
Just so you know, "X Drake" is actually pronounced "Diez Drake", as in Spanish for the number 10. It's weird because one assumes his name is based on Francis Drake, who was actually English. However to Spain he was considered a pirate because he fought with the Spanish Armada, so that seems to be why Oda uses Spanish for his name.
In the anime they say X with the english pronunciation If I'm not mistaken. I don't watch the anime anymore but now and then I watch some clips and they say X
@@ViniciusVZR i don't watch the anime anymore either but i just checked a clip (X-Drake and Page One introduction, 1:22) and in the japanese dub they say Diez
Yup because his dad was named Diez Barrels as well. The X is to make clear the card deck like ranking in Kaido's crew I suppose...King, Queen, Jack, 10 Drake, rest of the Flying Six, ...
Yeah that line from Yasuie suddenly seeing his daughter really was peak emotions during my binge of Act 2, in the anime (having already read the manga first, for context!). He made it seem like he was perfectly happy and content with all his decisions. The shift then to Toko was the most draining and then welling feeling. I wasn't ready.
Ironically, the amnesia thing was done for exactly the opposite of what you suppose. She could have easily just jumped passed King and gotten up to Kaido to get her “where she needs to be.” The whole point of the amnesia is to give more context on Mommas character, and some of what “Olin-Chan” does is important to her personality and future actions. I agree that amnesia is almost always a terrible trope and Oda didn’t do anything with it to help that. But it was not done here for plot convenience, almost exactly the opposite really.
And with that, you've finally caught up to the latest ongoing arc of One Piece... We've been in Wano Act 3 since before you even started your first One Piece review, and it's still not over...
Just a word on Brook. There is this idea that Luffy wants to throw the best parties, and to do so he always said he wanted a musician. That's what Brook brings to the table. Also he's next to Chopper, probably the best support role in the party.
Anime watchers are able to witness and appreciate Brook's music skills❤️ Plus I remembered this is one of the earliest moments where we can appreciate Oda actually going back to things he wrote more than a hundred chapters ago and fulfilling them
Another perspective on Linlin ("Big Mom"): She has the potential to become one of the most tragic characters in the entirety of One Piece. The "amnesia" storyline seems to suggest that she is on the level where she was as a child if something like sea water stops her devil fruit powers. If the memory problems have to do with real amnesia, giving parts of her own soul to objects (this can't be healthy), other side effects of the soul soul fruit or her being controlled by Mother Carmel's soul I don't know. That Big Mom wasn't really needed in the prison and it would have been easier for Oda to simply send her to Kaido says to me that he wanted to give her time Chopper and Tama. Chopper already needs to find a cure for Smile fruits - so maybe he needs to cure the soul soul fruit as well? Perhaps not connected to this but the entire storyline starts with an oddity: Why the hell do both Luffy and Big Mom survive falling in the waters of Wano?
About Luffy giving Hyogoro the tickets, Luffy ate O-Tama's rice without giving it any thought so I think Luffy is just thinking about that people in Wano suffer a lot with Kaido and Orochi
I just wanna point out how good of a storytelling tool luffy's nicknames for people are. There funny and simple enough to make them memorable, they're a good shorthand for names, and, in a world of hundreds of characters, they act as a good mnemonic device for the reader since remembering the nicknames helps your brain remember the real one.
"Orochi... A man of such small calibre could never in your life fully devour Oden!" That, Toki's prophecy, and a certain line from Kaido in Act 3 are probably my favorite lines of the whole arc. Someone may have already told you but Yasuie never ate a SMILE Fruit, he just smiled like that to make everyone else feel better about their situation. R.I.P. Yasuie-sama, the GOAT.
I think Hiyori tricking men into giving all their money to her was so she could give back to Toko, who would then give it to Yasu, and indirectly to the people of Okobore town
Act 3 is so dense, Merphy. I suggest making 3-4 videos off of it. We need your full analysis especially the first couple of chapters, that’s Oda showcasing his best capability as a writer. He can make someone take the spotlight away from Luffy and be his own main character for a while then making you fall in love and be in awe with his story. I’m genuinely excited hearing your thoughts on HIM. Literally one of the most romantic character that Oda crafted.
@@kamarassakka9922 Her not bothering with the action in act 3 that much is a given. I’ll just wait for her analysis in Kaido’s character during the raid and the “Oden” wannabe.
Your take in Wano people is amazing! We experience Arabasta, Skypiea, and Dressrossa but Oda picture for the people in this land is really devastating from the start. Can't wait to see the end of this arc with you together :))
Luffy doesn't offer other character food much but he's done it with Nami in particular a few times in the series. One was when Luffy thought she was sad departing from Vivi and Luffy offered her his meat and the other was I think he offered a seibean cookie when she was stressed. I think he's offered her food other times as well but those two are the first ones in my mind right now...
@@sabelotoda2 The one where he offers Nami the meat is from chapter 214 and the one with the cookie is from chapter 129. You can't really see him give the cookie but you can see his dialogue saying that this is the last cookie and gives it to her telling her to not panic and eat this. And in the next panel you can see her eating the cookie while crying. I believe they only had three cookies and Luffy eats one and gives the two to Nami.
I don't know what you're going to do when you're completely caught-up on "One Piece". I enjoy listening to first-timers give their reactions to stuff, but you're almost caught-up. I honestly think you'd do well to give weekly reviews of new chapters. You've got a following and a fan-base who likes you, so I think you should consider it. I'd watch those reviews. Take advantage of the new subscribers.
also, her perspective is very unqiue, because she has the experience of being a fantasy reader and also has a more mature connection IMHO than most other reactors. She, for exmaple, focues more on the themes, emotional beats and dialogue, than on the cool stuff and fighting stuff and so on. It would be AMAZING if we will get weekly chapter discussions! And then imagine the community stuff too! Like mannn, it would be so cool to see a wild discussion between people like Tekking, Brago, Morj, Roger, Arthur, Daniel and Merphy! We are used to the core One Piece community, but Daniel and Merphy will definitely stir things up, if they decide to partake!
In this act at least, she is quite literally a plot device and nothing more. Her purpose was to get set Luffy free, give control of the prison to our team and take away the Queen before the big fight. The panel of her being pulled away by boars my as well be a representation of Oda getting her the fuck out of the plot for now😂
I love the commentary on King lmao, basically how everyone felt about him. I know nothing and I have nothing to go off of, but he looks awesome so I need to know more about him
I think after his experience with otama... luffy understood the hunger issues ppl go through in wano.....that's why he was able to give his meal cards to hyogoro....maybe
Luffy wouldn’t share his meat with someone who had enough, but I think the thought of good people starving to death while others have more than enough makes Luffy unbelievably angry.
In my time with one piece I've either got teary eyed or moved to tears my fair share of times.... but I'll never forget reading week to week a reading what the Smiles did, and how Orochi exploited the people of Wano. I was visibly shaken
24:50 That's one of the main criticism that people have about Enes Lobby however since that aspect will be categorize as "Power Scaling" a lot of people prefer to ignore it.
I think that Big Mom's amnesia is actually plot armor for the Kaido's side and not the good guys as a lot of people believe, and thus don't like it. So on one side you have Killer and Kid being helped by her, and Luffy put under a lot of duress, essentially life-or-death, do it now situation to attempt use haki to unshackle himself before he gets smashed out the boundaries. How would have this played out without her? Either Killer and Kid would be dead (or Queen would have stopped because Kaido still wants them under his command; basically toying with all of them), or under similair duress Luffy would have broken the shackles and saved them, having to seriously duel Queen. But on the other hand, if Big Mom would have been alright in the head, she would have went straight to find either her kids, smashing every sinlge Kaido's crew member to bits, or just did the same but went straight for Kaido. Making her situation with Kaido been irreparable in the process - thus good guys overall would have an easier time to "win". As there would have been a war between BM and Kaido.
been saying this forever, if anything the amnesia plot line was a plot device to get Big Mom and Kaido together in a way that COULD facilitate an alliance, as was oda's plan the moment he brought BM into the arc. it wasn't to help luffy get out of udon, he would have been able to get out sooner or later without her help. still a bit sloppy execution-wise regardless, imo, assuming Big Mom's amnesia doesn't return to the story in a meaningful way.
Yeah I remember back then when i thought big mom would also be against kaido in order to weaken him before luffy's big fight . But their alliance now makes the situation worse for luffy's side .
@@furorteutonicus9045 really? I did not know that! It could be just that, but i don't think (or at least I hope) Oda wouldn't introduce amnesia to that degree into the character if he did not intend for it to play a role narratively, which technically it has but mostly as a kind of messy way to achieve a certain goal in the plot. Big Mom does have a very blatant history of memory issues and lapses, to the point it is her most defining trait, which makes me believe there is a little more to her becoming O-Lin this arc.
The easiest way to distinguish Jack's real name if you keep confusing it with Tom is to just remember that the top 3 strongest members of Kaido's crew are named King, Queen and Jack which is done on purpose to represent the top 3 most valuable numbers in a deck of cards also their bounties work in the same way with Jack having the lowest and King having the highest
And Doffy being the Joker is another part of the card theme. (So are alot of the other crewnames, like Ginrummy and Holdem, but they're not that important)
@@SennaHawx Yeah I know which is also Why the top 4 positions in the Don Quixote Family were Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs also I think the names of Trebol, Pica and Diamante are Spanish for the Clubs, Spades and Diamonds but correct me if i'm wrong

Unpopular opinion: I liked what Oda did with Big Mom's amnesia here. It let us know another side of her, not only for comedic relief, but basically having us meet a version of Big Mom without her trauma. But maybe it's my bias since Big Mom is my favourite villain emperor

I recommend for you, to end Part 3 on the Flashback. Part 3 is so long, and the Flashback is a great Endingpoint. 5:50 Independently of Absaloms Charakter. Moria turned into this Shell of a Man, because he lost his entire Crew, and then replaced most of them whit Zombies, and got very carefull whit choosing new Comerates because he was scared to relife the same Trauma again. And now he finds out Absalom is dead. Thats so sad, I feel so bad for him. 6:30 Yeah, he is very overlooked, but his Conflict, the Reasons for his Behavior that realy connected whit me. Even after he long gave up Hope, he still carried out his Duty, out of Loyalty. Hes one of my Favorites from the Scabbards. 8:25 Swampy is fine. We like your Nicknames. 10:40 yeah hm, thats true. He is the Guy who wants all the Meat for himselfe. Its funnily out of Charakter for him. 13:10 I feel that was the Idea, Yasuie was ment to look unimportant. I even expected him to be a Spy. 17:22 a lot of People have a lot of Oppinions on the Amnesia. 20:55 hes more of a Fencer, but I get it, I wasnt too found of him eighter. 32:20 yeah he never ate one, it was all just him beeing optimistic, and sharing there Suffering and all of that, an absolutely great Guy. 39:00 and Usopps Toadoil. That backfired on him very hard, didnt it? 55:00 oh yeah I teased on that in a earlyer comment. The Smile Fruits are made whit a Substance called SAD. Sad Smiles, brilliant. 58:00 Momo sees how Luffy is willing to do so much, and he sees how other People are willing to trust him whit there Lifes, and he thinks to himselfe, he couldnt have done the same, and if he deserves that much Trust, if hes able to life up to all of there Expectations. Thats so much Responsibility.
Not just used to but probably closer to what she would be like if it hadn't been for mother Carmel. Big mom as she is is the 60 years old if things went bad version..with the memory loss .

You really shouldn't disregard the importance of a musician with Brook in the grand scheme of things. Luffy has been talking about getting a musician since the very beginning for a reason You can't hold a big party without music 🤔 Also, Binks Sake is honestly just an amazing song for many different reasons
After you’re caught up I would love to see your reaction to the anime openings, I know it’s a copyright nightmare but I think even a video where we have to open a second window to listen would be great. The gag with Toko is that otoko means male, and she’s often called O-Toko so she jokes about not being a boy despite her name.
Adding the O- prefix to girl’s names to show affection was a common practice in Edo era Japan, and that’s what Wano is based on.
ty
i watched the anime first before switching to the manga and i actually got this gag just cuz of how much i’ve heard otoko in anime in general

Always eye opening takes on characters others don't focus on as much cause they're too busy talking about a Strawhats combat feats lol

the "towel gag" is just the way japanese portray thiefs the way americans would have a blindfold with holes
That meal ticket thing is a very important thing from Luffy, he doesn't want to be called a hero because that means he has to share the meat, and here he is, sharing his food.
Maybe because the tickets were for dango and not the meat🤣
Luffy and the Strawhats share their soft spot for the Elderly and Children thus mutual hatred for Cesar and now Orochi
"Every moment in Wano hits different with context." Oh Merph, you have NO idea...
In thriller bark he also offered to share his lunchbox to zoro to convince him to come with him and explore the place^^
This is brilliant
cool
@@lul6749 oh wow completely forgot about that lol
Add on the fact that Luffy promised to Tama that no one would starve in Wano again it makes sense why someone like Luffy would share what food he has
A subtle detail that I love about the Udon speech is how Luffy’s lack of hesitation to infect himelf, was ultimately due to him knowing that Chopper was there. For me, it was just another great moment, where Luffy displays the utmost amount of trust and faith in his crew, without having to think about consequences.
Awesome review btw.
Yes 🙌
I wouldn't call it turning into hero, just more considerate to the situation that the people of wano are in.

So , if you've kept up with the theory community and Luffy's dreams beyond being Pirate King .

Small correction. CP0 is not associated with CP9. They are two different organizations with two different purposes(though similar) and two different "people" they answer to. Very important to not confuse that moving forward, I made the same mistake early on.
To be fair tho, they all ultimately answer to the same person at the top; IMA or whatever lol

the way I understood it was that CP0 is the organisation that *directly* works for the world nobles while CP9 was the most secret CP that only did covert operations.

Killer submitted to Orochi because he was worried for his captain. They could kill Kidd if Killer didn't follow his order.

That Zoro and Sanji moment was impeccable!
The Killer motivation for following Orochi’s orders was just understated. He was doing it because he was told Kid would be executed if he didn’t.

Olin is a stretch I think
To my understanding, Oda was originally planning to have Mingo in Wano.
even lower ranking officers of Kaido's forces are named after different types of poker and other card games, like Holdem and Speed.
I'm just surprised with that naming convention that they don't have an Ace too just to piss Luffy off

the amensia thing is well known between the fandom that it was a bad aproach til this day.
Lmao)
I also didn't like the amnesia plot but to be honest O-lin was hilarious 😂
Luffy uses most if his brain on battle thats ehy he is a fast learner🤣 mayb same for zoro too
@@fstorm2 Yep, Luffy straight up saying thanks, for meeting CP9 earlier now he could do Soru from watching them too.
"I have to use people's real names now, gah." HAHAHA that got me.
!that arc! XD
Why?
Luffy doesn't use real names unless they earned his respect or Hatrec

For instance Cry Baby slowly evolving to Shirioshi

TraGuy is stuck probably cause Luffy can't say Trafaulgar
@@FrarmerFrank because of the way Merph presented it. It was a really funny line.
2-
Also, I wanna point out that this is the first time we see Luffy galvanising a crowd of people (again, the theme of leadership in the entire saga with Big Mom, Kid, Law, Kaido, Luffy, Old man Hyo being a fallen leader, Orochi, Yasui, and Oden, whom we've (read you've) heard so much about) and I think this is another great thematic thread...
-Law exchanges his life for his crew, and how he gets mad when Shinobu doubts his crew
-How torn Kid is about Killer, and how the closest he gets to being broken is when his crew is harmed
There's a lot I could say, but in order to possibly avoid spoiling, leadership is a great thematic thread here
Lastly, YOU ARE AMAZING!!! GREETINGS ALL THE WAY IN South Africa ... And I'm not sure how far off this is, but when the USA daylight savings thingy happens again, is it possible for you to say? 😅😅..
Actually his eating supports his rapid metabolism which causes rapid regeneration and is from Garp's Super Soldier training
Its why he recovers fast resting, faster sleeping, and regenerates near instantly after eating a lot of food such as eating Biscuits vs Cracker, a shit load of Moochi vs Katakuri, and a lot of Moochi dongos in Udon to train in Udon
Both answers from these comments give so much context to Luffy's character, not only his background having an impact on his habits now as an adult but also a technical understanding on his powers. Thank you both, as writer I think I can use these.

Also oda wasn't just inspired by dragon ball and is reason for doing things is mostly just how he likes to write
While dragon ball is about self improvement through battle one piece is more about adventure
Plus dragon ball ended in 95 which was 2 years before the release of one piece
@@user-gk6nt5gi5n how does dragon ball ending before one piece affect it being an inspiration for oda? luffy is like a better version of goku, and oda fanboys over DragonBall when asked. it's definitely one his main inspirations, alongside another story called Mr slump.

also toriyama being the author of slump is something that slipped my mind, because I dont care that much about all of toriyama works, but oda DOES.
I don't think Merphy would even like Dragon Ball
One Piece is mostly planned out and Oda just makes the pieces fit, while Dragon Ball is gag manga turned into a martial arts manga written as it went along(characters and their powers completely forgotten, Chichi was a princess meaning Gohan and Goten should be princes, Launch doesn't even exist anymore, tails became recesive traits).
Waaaaaaa 😭
Hyogoro is pronounced like h-yo-goro. It's like when the boys come together and say "yo" as a greeting. You basically just put a hard H in front of the yo.
*I would say: hiyo-goro. Note, that there is not that English-sounding "oh/ow" when ending a syllable with "o".
@@rcookie5128 Hyogoro is how you should write it in English, Hiyogoro is how most people would end up pronouncing it just because they say it quickly and it just happens naturally that the "i" sound is added there.
@@MrGalRoz What I'm afraid of is the people would read "Hyo" as "High-Oh". That why I thought writing it out with an "i" would help.
With oda I have a feeling it was as deep as you say

I wanted to hear your opinion on Okiku, the samurai lady, but making me love Ashura this much was amazing.
Kiku is like my favourite character, I wanted to hear Merphy's opinion on her too. At least we know that she's going to in Act 3.
"Orochi... A man of such small calibre could never in your life fully devour Oden!"
That, Toki's prophecy, and a certain line from Kaido in Act 3 are probably my favorite lines of the whole arc. Someone may have already told you but Yasuie never ate a SMILE Fruit, he just smiled like that to make everyone else feel better about their situation. R.I.P. Yasuie-sama, the GOAT.
uhh? spoilers bro
@@taimoordanish3802 Where? Toki's prophecy is first heard in Act 1 and the thing about Yasuie is only in an SBS.
I think Hiyori tricking men into giving all their money to her was so she could give back to Toko, who would then give it to Yasu, and indirectly to the people of Okobore town
Also as punishment to the men themselves. They were collaborators who helped Orochi control Wano. That's how they made their fortunes.

38:15 The anime version of this was so heartbreaking. The manga had me tearing up, but when I heard the voice acting I wept
@@schnozchan6606 Uuuh, people who almost drown tend to get amnesia. I think this is literally it.
@@SennaHawx Yeah I know which is also Why the top 4 positions in the Don Quixote Family were Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs also I think the names of Trebol, Pica and Diamante are Spanish for the Clubs, Spades and Diamonds but correct me if i'm wrong
since act 3 is the longest act and still ongoing with 80+ chapters, I have broken down the next stopping points:
ch 956-978 (23 chapters)
ch 979-1000 (22 chapters)
ch 1001-1023 (23 chapters)
ch 1024-TBA (14+ chapters)
Unpopular opinion: I liked what Oda did with Big Mom's amnesia here. It let us know another side of her, not only for comedic relief, but basically having us meet a version of Big Mom without her trauma. But maybe it's my bias since Big Mom is my favourite villain emperor
now you can see how important punk hazard arc is, all things started there.
The yeti cool brothers would like to know your location
One of my favorite things about this arc is Law and Drake showing their fanboy side when sanji uses the suit
I would like to say that is alright if you can’t make video about Act 3 next friday you shouldn’t rush
Act 3 is densely packed with great moments and information
So you should take your time and fully digest the information
I am sure many people would agree with me as Act 3 has currently passed i think like 60-70 chapters
Edit: i just checked it is almost 80 chapters
She should separate the Flashback and the raid
@@joel3399 yes that would be a very good seperation
Merphy is going to be separating Act 3 into multiple parts, the first being the flashback
@@LINKedup101 did she confirm it on discord or patreon?
I am not on them so just asking
@@arnavphadke8278 yeah I'm on the Patreon discord and we generally give her an outline of when to have breaks for videos, I think act 3 is being spilt in about 4 videos before she's all caught up
You have made me want to reread this section of Wano! Your descriptions are always so powerful. Personally, I don’t mind your nicknames for characters. It has become a highlight of videos.
Amnesia isn't a great trope, but for big mom its suppose to show us who she used to be. As it reduced her back to her childhood state.
Not just used to but probably closer to what she would be like if it hadn't been for mother Carmel.
Big mom as she is is the 60 years old if things went bad version..with the memory loss .
Omg no way, that Perona outfit was completely unexpected, didn't even know you used it before!
I usually skip ads, but then you told me not to skip it and I just couldn't seem to disobey. Scary. But I got to see you dress up (and laugh) as Perona, so totally worth it.
Love the chaos of this video- almost Daniel goblin level of chaos
Merphy, I almost cried of laughter when you disguised as a ninja with a sweater. You are so amazing, it was a fantastic moment. So glad you are enjoying Wano
You really shouldn't disregard the importance of a musician with Brook in the grand scheme of things. Luffy has been talking about getting a musician since the very beginning for a reason
You can't hold a big party without music 🤔
Also, Binks Sake is honestly just an amazing song for many different reasons
Really appreciate having the chapter number on screen as someone who likes going back in the manga while watching your videos! :)
After you’re caught up I would love to see your reaction to the anime openings, I know it’s a copyright nightmare but I think even a video where we have to open a second window to listen would be great. Some of them are so fun and give insight into what our crew probably gets up to whilst hanging out on the ship others are really hype and there’s a few emotional ones
