Our family was camping in a tent on the Wairarapa coast when this happened, my Dad woke us all up at 3.10am and said he just saw a large white ball come up out of a gully in in the Orongorongos in the Remutaka Ranges (he was a hunter and knew those hills well).
It rose up slowly and was just floating in one place and then just shot off like a bullet down south to the south island and disappeared. I got up but it was gone. The next morning we heard it reported on the news on our transistor radio as we ate breakfast. I'll never forget it and my Dad always brought it up in conversations as it was utter proof of Aliens as far as he was concerned! I was 10 years old at the time.

I remember this event well because it was the first time I had seen video of the "Feu Fighters" aka "Balls of Fire" "glowing balls of light" " glowing spheres" "Fiery orbs" etc etc. I was 19 yrs old in December of 1978, about to turn 20. My dad was a WWII veteran, Marines, South Pacific, GuadalCanal Island. He and his fellow Marines heard and saw some very strange chit on that island. Same goes for the other islands in the Solomon's. When I mentioned the Kaikoura, New Zealand balls of light UFO's is when he told me about the Feu Fighters that pilots had to deal with across Europe during the war. I had never heard about all that until then. He said that everyone just accepted that they were some kind of Nazi weapon. One which was never explained to the troops or the pilots satisfaction. At all! But whatsa guy gonna do when the brass says "Shaddup aboud'it" ? They shaddup aboud'it!! Same went for the sights and sounds of GuadalCanal. Resistant Japanese soldiers were not the only reason the troops cleared caves and tunnels with flamethrowers. Mere mortal men cannot make the kinds of sounds they heard emanating from those caves and tunnels and across the island, especially at night. Men definitely cannot vocalize at those volumes either. Dad, being from the hills and mountains of Tennessee said " Down home we called them Boogers and Hairy Men.
Aliens in the caves screaming like banshee? Sounds like bs.

That is my uncle Lén in the Documentary. My Aunty said they got a visit fróm men in black type people after the insident. She was still afraid to talk about it well into hér 70 s . I was 8 years old at the time and still remember it happening

I live in NZ. I remember this well. I am a retired scientist/engineer with experience in these fields. I believe the story.
In those days there were squid boats about, but an optical inversion would behave differently, or not exist, from different directions of view, and they don't show on radar.
The radar returns say that it was there consistently. There is no chance that temperature inversions, and radar coincided at the same instant, several nights in a row.
There were also sightings from several different directions on the ground, from Wairarapa to Canterbury,. At14,000ft it was visible for 200 kms or so.
Coordinating a farce of this type, over several different organisations, and keeping it quiet forever is not possible.
Hi Chris, in 1952 an incident involving an RAN aircraft of the naval air arm, was joined by a large UFO, which formated on his starboard side, in level flight. This was quickly followed by another UFO on the pilot's port side. The flyer sought advice with regard to these bogeys, and ATC confirmed they had been noted on radar. The aircraft was closely boxed in, requiring very cautious flying on the part of the RAN flight officer. This continued for perhaps 10 minutes, in level flight. Each UFO, in succession, then departed in what was considered thousands of miles an hour to the east. To witness this, was ATC, via radar and visual confirmation, plus the pilot and ground observations. Upon landing, the pilot was thoroughly debriefed by both the RAAF and RAN, as I recall, and a year later, J. Allen Hynek (from project B.B.) Flew out from the states to debrief him further. I can only presume that this was reported as part of the 5 eyes alliance. The arrival and departure of the UFOs happened at astonishing speeds and left the pilot quite frightened and perplexed.

I was seven years old at the time and it was school holidays. My family had rented a property for a week on Happy Valley road a short walk just out side a small settlement could Motunau. The small town is situated between Christchurch and Kaikoura on the east side of the south island in New Zealand.
I woke up one morning to my family discussing the strange light they had seen moving in the sky, out towards the ocean that night. On the follow night the same light was seen again but this time it was moving from over the ocean and came over land. I remember being so disappointed my parents hadn't woken me up to see it. They described it as being about half the size of the moon. My grandmother was so intrigued, on the third night she climbed a hill near by and camped the night waiting for the object to return but it never did . Only after our holiday did we hear about the other sightings on the news.
Another story worth a look at is the one of Frederick Valentich. The audio from his plane is just creepy.

I lived in the UK at the time and it was headline news there. I have lived in Christchurch for 42 years now and i work for Uncensored Magazine, and have done a lot of research on these sightings.
I have vivid memories of watching this on UK news the day after it occurred. I recall one of the reporters saying "I hope they're friendly!". There was also extensive coverage in the British newspapers. I was only a child then, and it reinforced my belief that aliens were visiting the planet Earth. I'm a lot older and sceptical now, but it's good to see this being covered and it remains an intriguing encounter. Keep up the good work, Chris.

I know John Gordon RNZAF base commander at Ohakea in 78 he's still alive and lives in our town I asked him about it he chuckled and said that he suggested to the A4 pilots who he described as a lively bunch of lads to go and check it out, none of them did he said as if they were scared to.

Hi chris I'm from New Zealand 🇳🇿 and first and foremost thanks for your service to the world and humanity for being a fighter pilot that event was the year I was born.I bet u get this all the time but me and another friend had our own experience in the late 90s on our way from rotorua to opanaki it happened in the gorge area before mount mesenger we were sitting in the back of a Ford ute outside of the uts when u could get away with it back in the day we both tried banging on the windows to try and get our m8 who was driving to get his attention and it was like he was in a trance while driving me and my m8 couldn't believe what we were seeing there were 3 craft silver Grey reflective glass metallic looking the typical saucer that's seen on TV and videos not a tic tac or triangle shape or cigar the 1 that looks like u see on the farm in the air I've also got photos and video of uap I've took my self if you're interested in seeing them.❤ your channel keep up the good work
New Zealand was a hotbed for sightings back in the day. I lived in the Hunua area for years. Sightings were so common us kids just took them for granted.
I remember travelling to Rotorua many times at night and seeing a lot of shooting stars. I’m not saying that’s what you saw but I thought at every time what an interesting area for night sky gazing. 🙏

Lots of sightings all over the country during that event. Our family was returning home one evening at that time from the Kapiti coast back to the Wairarapa on the Paekakariki hill rd we were followed by a rotating coloured light disc that went right over our car. It was low I got a real good look from the backseat. This was seen by Wellington ATC and relayed to a local radio station that announced they had been contacted by ATC saying they had tracked a UFO approaching Wellington from the Tasman and they lost its track as it got close.Thats why I look for all the reports to see if others saw what we did. Heaps saw this flap. Cheers.

Kaikoura has some very interesting geology and geography. A very (very) large fault line off the coast, very deep water close to the shore and many many whales in the area...
for whatever reason, NZ and AUS sure had a lot of sightings in the 70s, 80s and 90s....if those things exist in our physical reality, the environment you describe sure sounds like a good place to build a base and hide from the surface dwellers 😂

Chris, thank you for presenting this compelling case. You did a great job. As an Australian, I recall this story as a teenager in the News at the time. Multiple incidents and witnesses including flight crews, tv crew and radar operator…photographs, film, radar…and then dismissed later as nothing of importance…amazing. Something which should be noted is that New Zealand has a high incidence of earthquake activity in the area, they also have volcanoes…both of which are sometimes associated with mysterious lights though I do not believe there were any at that time. There was a 7.8 earthquake in Kaikoura much later in 2016.

Another superb retrospective Chris. This is exactly the stuff the newbies to this subject need to see and hear. Real footage, real pro witnesses, plus radar corroboration….what more does any rational human being need to convince them that SOMETHING is out there and has been for a very long time. This kind of reflective vid is so much more interesting than the SM bs vids and wannabes of today. None of the people in this vid wanted anything from anyone except maybe some truth or facts. If there was swamp gas on the ground the light may have been reflecting off it. Swamp gas is highly reflective.

I remember this news report occurring over 2-3 nights & a consequent documentary film, very well. The NZ government scientific arm at the time dismissed the sighting as the planet Venus or the reflected lights of a Japanese squid fishing fleet. Pure bunkum, as the objects returned a solid radar reflection. I have never witnessed any unexplainable sightings myself, as a seasoned small vessel skipper, but have spoken to some crew members who have seen lights under the sea surface off Great Barrier Island, near Auckland. Additionally, my brother, relayed to me that he witnessed lights moving about above the sea also off Great Barrier Island, many years ago.

78 kiwi in da house. I'm adopted, born in this town, on this day. Aunty Ngairie never told me about this and Uncle Quen never ever said a thing to Me about this work. I always felt like they were keeping soemthing from me and it was weird they always took me to shrinks as I was growing up to "find out what was wrong with me" because they were "certain it's in my genes". Finally after seeing this video my entire birthday and adoption makes sense. I knew something was weird That both my godparents were pilots I've never met and a minister was who signed my birth certificate. So glad to finally have some understanding of who and where I'm from. I knew something wasn't right.

"Actually, ten eyes" had me chuckling as well, as though nations obviously have two eyes, which had never occurred to me! On a more serious note, we all know of course in this subject that the governments and military don't tell the truth, but the bit with Ross Coulthart towards the end was a bit new to me: the idea that even straight-forward and real UFO sightings, even if they really don't involve the military at all, are still downplayed or media campaigns might be mounted by the Five Eyes military just to keep the subject closed down. Hmm, then again, of course we know that happens, but Coulthart really spells it out.
No air force wants to admit they have no explanation to aerial phenomena.

This isn't conjecture; memory conformity is what happens in such cases."

And remember back then it was all 'primary radar' not SSR.
My Sister and Brother in law have a farm at Clarence Point, 25 miles north of Kaikoura, and sat up on the hill behind the farm on both nights, and watched the whole show. It happened, and it was real. They watched the incident for about 30 minutes.They and 200 others, three radars, Wellington, Christchurch and Blenheim, and the air and film crews saw this. It happened. 10 years earlier my father, uncle and dads 1st mate on a trawler owned and operated my Dad, saw an even closer encounter with a larger craft off the Christchurch area, just south of Banks Peninsular called 'Birdlings Flat', an inshore trawling ground. These things, whatever they are, are seen a lot down here. I've only ever seen a questionable event once, again over Christchurch. Where, by coincidence, there is a large US air Base that services the Antarctic! Also, the report of the air force security guy, stating that they were seen over the Blenheim area, with shafts of light beaming down, is about the same area as the 5 eyes Spy base is located in the Waihopi valley!

Had a friend camping around Kaikora , he told me they had 3-4 ufos hounding them from as close as the tree tops . Theyd change color and shape, he told me most the other people he was with were in tears or shock.
We saw the same thing it was just above a granddaddy pine - it looked like disc to me. Multi coloured lights.

My mother and grandmother saw a 'silver' craft on the ground during daytime with 'little stick figures' walking around underneath. They watched it take off at speed disappearing quickly upward. There was a burn area where the craft had been. That was in Taumaranui in 1957.
There was a great segment on this incident in the UK TV series Arthur C Clarkes mysterious world in the late 70's or early eighties. I vividly remember watching it on TV as a child. It is probably on RUclips somewhere. Yes i was obsessed with the UFO enigma back then and still am. I am in my early fifties now and still no closer to an answer to this perplexing mystery.

I saw a craft of unknown origin one night in 2014. It had a luminous outline of the craft, even the three portholes on its Starboard side. It was silent as it slowly passed over the small town. It seemed to be following the highway and I watched it until it went out of view behind the treeline. Hard to tell how big it was but to hazard a guess I would say roughly 50-70m wingspan. It was a boomerang shape. It was at a low altitude of about 150-200m.

I was 14 years old in 1978 New Zealand and I saw a satellite in the sky, probably the first one I'd ever seen, but I was slightly confused when it changed direction at least four times without stopping or slowing down, I just thought "is that what they do?"

Chris, you mentioned that there was wreckage found from the Valentich incident, I believe so far nothing has ever been found of either the pilot or his plane.
Nothing has ever been found.
I've spoken to a number of first-hand witnesses from the ground. These sightings went on for a few weeks and were associated with some sort of exercise going on with the ionospheric heating "HAARP" antenna that were located around Canterbury at that time.
I think the "objects" were radar decoy projections composed of plasma and the famous "figure 8" loop image was caused by a shake in the projection equipment. Being composed of plasma, these objects were solid enough to show a radar return and leave an atmospheric eddy after the projection is switched off.
Even one of the Argosy pilot witnesses at the time (I can't recall which one) said he believed the objects were the result of "Radar interferometry" without further elaboration.
They are here! - we are not alone! - there is no question about it - I witnessed a UAP back in feb 2004. Zig zagging side to side, up and down - moving fast and stopping without slowing down, no sound whatsoever, moving at speeds that are beyond belief. I live in Norway and I am convinced what I witnessed was an alien craft over the mountain directly across from my house. The way it moved defied physics. I made a video about it and posted it on my youtube vlog channel - if anyone is interested in hearing my story.

Was also seen in Auckland. I had to do a double take. All I saw was this massive gold swirl in space. Object must of been massive. Around 15 years back or more. I ran inside. Shaken up.

I've noticed that a huge number of sightings are happening in December/January. Much more than just random chance. It would make sense as it's the darkest months in the northern hemisphere, which is great if you don't want to be seen, but why so many bright lights? I doubt we'll ever know why.

Quentin Fogarty's life changed dramatically after this event.
There's nothing in the Vallentich case....he lost his bearings and ended up hitting the water. Also he wasn't an RAAF pilot that was widely reported, he was a CUO with the RAAF Air Training Corps (cadet). His family had also stated that he was HEAVILY into UFO's and sci-fi.
That's my expert opinion anyway!
