Thrilling performance. Yes, it's fast. But it's also crisp and the ensemble is superb. That the violins and principal oboe can coax such sweetness out of the secondary theme is amazing to me.
Beethoven's genius portrays perfectly the immense tussle between Coriolanus's angry vanity and the loving pleadings of family and country. The music tells us everything.
Yes, that second theme (perhaps love in Beethoven's mind?) has always been in my mind when I think of this overture. The power of the strings in their sustained unisons followed by the hammer chords always stirs the roots of my emotions. If I could travel in a time machine back to the first rehearsals and performance music like this......
The second theme portrays the pleading of Coriolanus's mother to make peace and stop a war that the general was waging on Rome. The twist in the story is that Coriolanus concedes, makes peace, but then is consequently murdered by his allies that wanted him to continue the war. It's worth watching a film adaptation of Shakespeare's play and telling of the story (you could probably find one on RUclips if you searched for it).
I think the character of the ideas behind the composition needs a brisk tempo. He keeps the momentum through to the end as the ritard is written INTO the rhythm in the cellos.
Please watch his pre-concert talk, he used the metronome mark for the 5th symphonie for this piece as both are Allegro con Brio, both are in C minor and both are very dramatic
@@albancoudret2966 That version is terrible too. Look for Zubin Mehta and the Vienna Philharmonic at Schönbrunn Palace for a more reasonable rendition of the 5th Symphony and Leonard Berstein and the Wiener Philharmoniker for one of Coriolan Overture.
@@jordillach3222 We all have different tastes, it is however the way Beethoven wanted it played according to his metronome marks. Just food for thought, I will check the versions you mentioned though !

Very thrilling performance! I admire Mr Zander's, a true student of Beethoven.
Benjamin Zander, un gran estudioso de Beethoven y sus tempi originales. Gracias por esta versión que rompe la equivocada tradición.
Just watched 5 performances of the Coriolan on RUclips and like this one the most!
Sublime!!! Thank you so much for this heavenly performance!!
Un grand bravo et merci pour ce moment magnifique

Всё так, века идут, ничего не меняется, а произведение божественно
This performance seems to bring out the melodic line and makes more sense.
Yes, sets the temperature rising just like Charles Munch
Thank you
Too fast for me, but I can respect this interpretation. Zander is such a fantastic musician and conductor.

Listen and learn from Harnoncourt!
I think he has. This is a very rhetorical performance.
Hello :) Please synchronize image and sound !
Almost as good as Egmont ;-}
si sentiva alla pubblicità di Petrus
Ist das nicht zu schnell? Hmmm 🤔
Terrible! Why so rushed! Does Boston Philharmonic Orchestra pays its musicians by the hour?

THİS İS ORİGİNAL TEMP
Sounds hideous, rapid and comically amateurish.
