Glad to see you guys are still on this! Yup, it's a rough ride, but the story's gotta be told and heard.
The Marines were pulled out after one and a half months, to be relieved by the Army’s 81st Division. By then, the 1st Marine Division suffered 6,500 casualties - over a third of their entire strength. The 1st Marine Regiment suffering 70% casualties in 6 days, while the 7th Marine Regiment suffered 46% casualties.
The 81st Division, on the other hand, suffered 3,300 casualties. That’s a total of around 10,000 men killed, wounded or missing in a three-month battle for an island which would never be used for the purpose it was supposed to be captured for.
Talk about a total waste of time and lives.

In regards to Snafu and Sledge, in Sledge's book it was a Corpsman that stopped him from taking the gold teeth and it was because of both reasons the Corpsman did it.

The amount and type of insignia ( stars or bars ) marking someone as an officer were not a universal policy. Seeing somebody wearing stars, not serving with the U.S., didn't automatically mean he's a general.

Not quite sure if you picked up on it, but the guy who asked for a war souvenir on the airfield wearing a blue shirt and white helmet was part of the Sea Bees, a construction corp attached to the Marines. They were non combat, so it was less a matter of a 'new guy' as much as a man who didn't fight in battle asking for some 'battle glory'. Some other small details: Ack Ack was covered with the one of the blankets his father was in charge of making, to make that scene even sadder. Chuckler didn't lose his leg, he was only injured in the thigh. You commented on Chesty Puller's pipe, but look out there'll be another well loved character who ends up smoking one.
Also, I found the scene with the lemonade more saddening than anything, but Sledge (and Snafu) were both showing signs of the so called 'thousand yard stare,' now more commonly referred to combat ptsd. Remember the line by his father in the first episode we meet Sledge? ''The worst thing about treating those combat boys from the Great war was not that they had had their flesh torn but their souls torn out. I don't want you to return with no spark, no life in your eyes."

I somehow doubt many of those interactions regarding "Seabees" happened that way. Those guys did important field work and even went in some beach landings with nothing but bulldozers. They built the stuff the Marines slept, ate and healed up in and helped take some key positions by clearing routes, particularly on Iwo.

13:23 That japanese 2 star soldier was a Sergeant not a 2 star general.
A Japanese general wouldn't be at the front lines like that. He would be as far away from the front lines as possible in a cave giving orders to his soldiers.

Glad you are staying with the series...it is often a very tough show to watch, but it is important history to be remembered.
I definitely agree that Snafu was trying to keep Sledge from crossing that line...he knew that Sledge still had a part of his soul that Snafu himself had long ago sacrificed to the horrors of war, and he did not want to see his friend make the same bad choice that he had made. 💯💯

11:40 Those mortars guys were setting up right in the line of fire of the bunker.
The only reason all of them didn't get mowed down is because the Japanese were not paying attention to their surroundings

My grandpa and great grandpa one a platoon sergeant the other a cpl. During the landing (they were in the same company) were both very different than the average man of ww2 being that they told the stories to the tee and told me everything to make sure I didn’t join at a very young age they failed to dissuade my uncles who luckily were post nam era but my grandpa who I remember the stories from more bc my great grandfather died when I was 6 put the fear of God into me when talking about crossing the air field. the hills were worse from his account.

Gramps is 40, and has seen enough (for now). The Skipper was 30. The Boys were 20. Before Vietnam, it was believed that men should stay in combat (with some temp rotation) and die or be victorious. That ended in our time, with permanent rotation out (because there would be no more victories).

Peleliu is an island that is a part of the 340-island chain that makes up the Republic of Palau. The UN “gave” Palau to the US to administer in 1947, along with other Pacific islands, as part of the “Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands”. It became an independent republic in 1981 & signed a Compact of Free Association with the US in 1982.
What does C of FA mean? The people of Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, & the Republic of the Marshall Islands are eligible for Medicaid, FEMA assistance, Pell Grants. They receive services provided by FAA, US Post Office, National Weather Service, FCC, FDIC. They also receive billions of dollars in US aid.
Also the US is the only foreign military allowed on the islands. No other nation can have its military on Palau/FSM/RofM without US permission. They have no military of their own. The US is responsible for its defense. Technically speaking, threatening these countries is the same as threatening the US. Citizens of nations with a C of FA serve in the US military.
