150 minuta - (TV Prva 27.02.2017.) Host: My first guest is already here. What's interesting about him is that he could have been my guest as some medical technician. However, with only 29 years of age he has in his biography finals of Zvezde Granda, he represented Serbia in the Eurovision Song Contest, he has songs that have millions and millions of views on RUclips - Milan Stankovic! Good afternoon and welcome. Milan: Good afternoon. Greetings to all your viewers. Thank you for this nice announcement. You know that cliche when we thank the hosts. Host: Milan, you are still very young. Could you even imagine, for example 15 years ago, that this was going to be your path? Milan: Never. That's actually the proof that in life no matter how much we aspire to something, fate is the one that decides where we will end up. When I was little, I could only imagine being part of ESC, having international fans, actually I never thought of it. That never crossed my mind. Host: You couldn't even assume your life was going to look like this. Milan: That's right. And after years of bans, my public have waited for me. That was a sign for me that I have to try to make a direct contact with them. Host: Your first phase of popularity was something amazing. You immediately singled out and I think you are the first one who made something similar to what we can see nowadays in international stars, Justin Bieber, for example. Milan: Justin Bieber before Justin Bieber. But chronologically, that's true. Host: I remember that period. You had your own sticker album, it was selling in every supermarket! I never saw that any other singer had something like that. You had fan clubs, girls adored you, everyone knew your name. Milan: Yes, that's right. They are here even today, the only change is that I expanded my audience. I matured musically, started to compose, got into production... I don't see myself as an interpreter anymore, I'm involved in every part of this job. And today, everything about that is so beautiful. I can't wait to start the tour next week in Vienna with my new song. Host: Yes, to promote the song. We will listen to it later. That's why we called you primarily. Milan: Yes. And I want to say that many things have changed, and I feel that we are growing and everything is going upward. Host: But were you afraid when you had to make that big pause in your career that happened after extreme success? Milan: Absolutely. After skipping huge steps, it happened this, let's say "cut" in my career and I don't know anyone who could handle all that media lynching, musical, production bans and come back. Host: What was the most important thing to you in that period when you couldn't do what you love? Milan: To stay healthy. Host: What advices did you get from your close ones? What did your mom tell you? Milan: My mother.. She's constantly worrying. I can't ask her for advice, whatever I try to do, she's worried. Host: That's natural for moms. Milan: Yes, I know. But generally, I made my own decisions, regardless of the fact that's very difficult sometimes and has consequences... Host: Look what we found, photos from your childhood. Milan: Awww. I'm cute on this photo and I need eyeglasses like these again. So, if anyone knows where I could find them, that would be good. Host: Yes, those glasses match your outfit. One sad fact that characterizes your childhood is that you lost your dad very early. You were only four years of age. And that made your mom a primary figure in your life, your mom and sister. Milan: Yes, my mom is on a pedestal in my life. I adore my sister, last night I was with her. And about not having a father... Well, I can't tell you because I can't imagine how it looks like having a father. I don't know that feeling. Maybe that's the reason why I dyed my hair and showed up as some brand new fictional character at that audition. Host: What do you mean by that? Milan: Well the night before the audition I wanted something different so I went to the hairdresser, dyed my hair blond. But it didn't turn out well, my hair was too much yellow, so I had to wear even more yellow cap to try to hide it. It looked really tragic. My point is that the consequence of not having a dad is that I needed a little more time to mature. And I feel like I go all alone through life without him to tell me when to stop or go. Host: Is that why you had to make some kind of a "wall" around you, to become stronger? Milan: Absolutely. I feel like I was in an incubator considering that maturing and dealing with different sorts of problems. Generally, this job brings with it a lot of people, changes, cities.. Every weekend I'm in a different place and I absorbed the culture and mentality from all those places so I created myself in that way. And I think that's why I'm so specific. People must understand everything I've been through. Host: Yes but are you aware of the fact that maybe that's the reason why some people think of you as a conceited guy? I personally think that was because of your youth and self-protection. Milan: Yes. I had to make some kind of protection. And this song "Ego" is really simbolic to me. It was very nice to sing about ego. Host: What was important to you? What did you want to say with this song? Describe your ego. How do you handle it? Milan: Uhh.. it depends. It's not easy haha. Host: What's so difficult about it? Milan: I've read a lot of books about that. And I think we cannot survive in this world without ego, especially in this job. But our main goal should be living without ego and living in the present moment. Host: Let's hear the song now. Milan: Ok, we also have ego symbols in the video.
Host: What does the statistic show? In this moment. Milan: In this moment, we have over 4 million views. We had one million after the first day. On Deezer we are just bellow Ed Sheeran and Sean Paul, on the third, fourth place. In such a short period... Host: How do you feel when you see all this success? Milan: This means we did the right thing. I was so dedicated to this whole project, from montage, color correction, video, song, styling. A lot of people were involved in it because I wanted to form the right story, to make a whole package. Because I always feel a huge responsibility towards the people who are waiting for me and my music. And they have been waiting for more than a year. But I think it was worth it. Host: You said before that you are not only a performer. How do you see yourself? What do you sing about, what do you compose, write? What's your message to people? What would you like them to recognize in your songs? Milan: In the beginning, I was little, I just had fun but I didn't know what I was doing. Now, I still have fun but I also know very well what I'm doing. Host: It's important to have fun. Milan: Very important. Because if I didn't have fun doing this job, it wouldn't all feel so sweet and magical. We need to have a purpose and love for what we do. Especially in this job where is a lot of sacrifices, investments.. We need to have in ourselves some higher purpose definitely. So, I'm still too young to answer easily all those questions, but I'm reading and learning, so I will be able to give you the right answer in a few years. And you asked about composing. I compose for others, for myself. I have a lot of plans and creative people around me and we are preparing many beautiful things but I can't announce any of it because I don't know when it's gonna be ready, album and everything that goes with it. When I first showed up on music scene back in 2007, or 2008 that was my main idea, to be different. In the meantime, many new singers appeared, but I think that, in the last 10 years none of them brought anything new and fresh to our music scene, no one was able to push the limits just a little bit. Host: And you want to do that? Milan: I just want to play the game. Host: My impression is that you've changed. Milan: I've changed physically. Host: Not just that. You are different. We met seven years ago when you represented our country at the Eurovision Song Contest. And you were very young and, if I can say, very insecure and unaware of everything that happened to you. You were the choice of Goran Bregovic, maybe that's why you were so nervous. Milan: Yes, all happened very quickly. But that time spent with Goran Bregovic was very important to me because he gave me the best possible advices for this job, he was my guide in some way, he taught me to watch all this from a different angle. Host: Is that the fun in your job you were talking about? For me, Goran is still that kind of person. He needs to have fun in order to succeed. Milan: Yes, as I said, we need to have fun, to have purpose and to work really hard. I have first two things, but when it comes to work, I'm a little bit lazy. My mom spoiled me. Host: But you are aware of it. That's the first step to overcome it. Milan: Yes. And after year and a half without releasing anything new, when I came out with a new song and saw these results, I said to myself :"Ok, I didn't do anything wrong, everything is fine." Host: But you are aware that you have to make an effort in order to succeed. Milan: Absolutely. It's always like that. Host: How do you live today? It seems to me that you are now the one who is protecting his mom more than she's protecting you. Milan: Definitely. We switched the roles. She's a single mom and she had a very difficult life. Look, I don't like sad stories.. Host: But your story has a happy ending. It gives hope. Milan: Well, yes. We want to grow and we'll be getting bigger and bigger. And my mom will be better. Host: How does she feel about you today? Is she surprised with everything you've achieved or she believed in you even when you didn't? Milan: She has always believed in me, always worried but when it comes to my job, my mom stands by, because she knows she can't help practically in some situations when I have to make next move. I think I was born with that feeling despite the fact that I went to medical school and immediately after graduation I started to work in order to help my mom financially. So I went to the audition, decided to dedicate myself to music and I think stage is definitely the right place for me. And I plan to grow and offer more and more. Host: Everyone has their own opinion about you. How's that? You practically grew up in that way. It is certainly very difficult for a young person when media write mostly false statements about him. Milan: Very difficult. Last few years, when I was dedicated to music, composing, performing I realised that my direct contact with the public is the most important thing. I ignored all the negativity, because you can't exist if you pay attention to negative comments, it's unbearable. Host: So, that's your advice? To ignore all that? Milan: Yes, to not pay attention to negativity. I listen to advices of professional people and people who understand me and I try, from year to year, to increase that number. I remember when I was wearing this kind of clothes few years ago and when I dyed my hair, people didn't understand that and it caused complete chaos. But now, years later, that trend came here and now everything's fine. Host: I wish you good luck in everything you do. Thank you for being my guest. You will sing live later. Milan: Ok. Thank you for having me.
