I've gotten like 20 comments about the pencil tool since making this vid, and have responded to that statement multiple times. I'm aware the wrong smoothing option was turned on. (I've never gotten any use personally out of the pencil tool so I didn't even notice.) Thing is however, the pencil tool still will see awkward post correction. If it works for you, awesome, however generally I'd recommend that if you want to use strokes like that, use the pen tool instead as it's way more precise and gives you way more control over your nodes, which in turn also makes gaps less likely when doing fills. Node control is more important when you're dealing with strokes / outlines, so being able to manually dictate how many nodes there are is very useful.
Where the hell was this video 5 years ago. I absolutely love how you show the problems that can be encountered during the process. Most of the time, brush tutorials like this kinda gloss over what happens in the program and it makes me feel like something was wrong with my computer. Btw I know you made a video about TB Harmony, but I was unsure if you plan to switch over or not. I recall you said you'll stick with flash, but you might get it later.
I'm about 60% of the way funded to buying Harmony. i've been taking commissions since releasing that video. I'll still use flash a bit and will make tuts for it still, as well as games, but I'll transition wholly to toonboom over time for animating, namely cause a few of the series i want to do would be a pain in the ass to do in Flash.
Cool I wish you luck, also please make like a progress journal of your transition and tutorials when you're comfortable. The easiest tutorial to follow I know is Jesse J. Jones's video; Not to say there isn't series already, but it feels hard to follow most of the time. Edit: by transition I mean like how you transitioned your workflow, since you already used it for 2 months if I recall.
Tbh, Onion Skin's tutorials were more helpful, since they focused on the differences and assumed you knew how to animate. Jesse's tutorials were more targeted at inexperienced and first-time animators. I've gotten a few tests made actually and have an animation planned for when i finally get it.
Zedrin that makes sense. Thank you for pointing that out, I've been viewing his videos wrong the entire time. edit:just in case I don't dislike his videos I just have a hard time understanding the program.
//Zed complains about pencil being a terrible tool Change the pencil mode to "Ink" instead of "Straighten". Nobody ever uses that??? //Zed complains about editing bitmap You could also try "Modify>Bitmap>Trace Bitmap" to have flash convert the bitmap to vectors.
Trace Bitmap can work, however it'll create a lot of nodes so it's not something you wanna use constantly. It'll lead to huge file sizes and be very difficult to edit. I've seen a lot of people make 'rigs' by painting stuff in sai and porting them into flash, and then wonder why it looks like garbage, however.
Zedrin Well-said and true. It’s surprising that some people can even manage to get by using it though. Also, sorry for pointing out about the pencil mode, just noticed the pin now.
Lazy Nezumi brings that option to any program you want, if it is something you actually want, and CSP has a host o post correction options in its brushes. I use them for decorative effects where sharp corners really screw up the brush shape.
kinda late but when using the smooth tool, make your selection with laso so it averages out a smaller area, and not the entire fill. This way it also wont break apart your art and leave holes in it.
I feel like I mentioned that tip. Combine that with smoothing strength being based on zoom level and you can get a feel for how to touch up edges super well.
All versions CS - CC may misbehave. MX and numbered versions like Flash 6 and MX 2004 don't do this, but they don't support screens bigger than the default screen size.
Hi, I’m having a problem with the brush because it’s stuck on like an outline and the color I want isn’t showing up. It’s been stuck like that for 2 days and I even deleted and reinstalled the app
I swear, I was more comfortable using simple animation program like Pencil2D, which doesn't have all this complicated features, even if the drawing tools don't have much variety to it. But now, I'm slowly learning how to animate in flash and God, it's a hassle. I'm only going to use it for frame by frame animation, and maybe tryout some of it's features. But the drawing part is hell. It denies all my several years of experience in drawing, I felt like a noob.
flash's biggest problem is it doesn't reflect what you do 1:1. You have to fight it to get it close. If you're only doing frame by frame, and you don't have much use for symbol based animation, I might recommend Clip Studio Paint or Krita. I have a tutorial on how to start animating in CSP as well as some videos on how to on their official channel.
Never used brush tool before but using that pencil in the first place I drawn was ugly af. I try to erase some parts of the lines but they always come back. And I just get frustrated from it. I just hope I could get the hang of brushes since I was never good at painting.
I was thinking of getting flash b/c the audio is a major headache in animate CC, I literally can get the audio to work correctly, until is saw this video ( the pencil is also I nuance in animate cc, like if u draw a closed circle with the pencil tool and you use the bucket tool it won't work unless you use the brush tool )
I have the same problem. In flash cs4 instead of drawing it scrolls. Apparently the only way to fix it is by disabling Windows Ink. But for Adobe Animate my drawing tablet works just fine.
hey i have a really big problem with flash: when I try to draw something, I either cann’t draw a line and it's moving the canvas or when I draw a circle, some extra long line is appears. it really doesn't allow me to animate. everything was fine previously, but then it began to manifest itself more and more often, and then I completely lost the ability to animating I have already changed the settings of the pen and the tablet itself several times as well as its driver. nothing helped. when I draw with the mouse here, it works. but I don't work with mouse ;-; I can also draw in sai and other programs, but i need flash for my work I have already looked through the entire Internet for a similar problem, but have not found an answer. so I hope for help and I will be very grateful to you
I have to use a stabilizer because i don't have a drawing tablet, not gonna buy one because I'm 13 and I spent my money on a sketchbook and I have to use a touchpad ;-;
I've tried Lazy Nezumi in flash, unfortunately with the way Flash's path correction works, it results in more problems than benefits. Lazy nezumi will give you a nice line if you turn Flash's 'smoothing' down to 0, however you'll get the same behavior I show at 2:40
@@Zedrinbot I mean, I agree that the pencil tool is shit, but sometimes it can behave like a brush, and the best part is, you can turn the strokes into fills.
@@Zedrinbot I don't like the pen tool. The curves are suspiciously too precise, and I feel like I don't put in enough effort when I do use the pen tool. Ergo, I'm sticking with the brush tool with pressure sensitivity and tilt activated. Some imperfections are fine.
With the brush: Go to the corners with the direct selection / sub-selection tool (white arrow) and pull the nodes across the paths to create corners. Then, when it's separated, just deleted the extra bits. For line tools (pen, pencil), just click the strokes. They'll select everything up to a corner or an intersection so you can cleanly delete.
I get it now. In animate cc I accidentally turn the "object drawing mode" on. that makes all the lines I made separated. If I turn it off, all lines that touching each other became one and I finally can delete every single intersecting parts. So that is done, but now i don't know how to convert my lines that already became an object into normal lines.
OH I see what you were talking about. Object drawing mode has some uses, but it's generally better to work with it off otherwise. To break stuff back into flats, you can either 'join' items together (make them into a single object), or just break them apart. (I think by default it's CTRL B? It may be something different.) *Modify > Combine Objects > Union* can define and combine objects *Modify > Break Apart* can break objects outside of objects, groups, and symbols.
Certainly. I've used it for all the parts of rigs I've made. I wouldn't necessarily suggest it for frame by frame, but it can work for that just fine too.
Yeah I realized that after rendering. That said, it still can be a bit inconsistent. The post correction is strong. It works out if you don't need precise lines, but if you do I'd recommend the pen tool instead.
Being vector based is no excuse, Clip studio has vector slides for line art and it's a billion times better than Adobe animate. Too bad my class requires Adobe animate
CSP doesn't render true vectors. Additionally it cannot process vector fills. It uses vector logic for lineart which is fuckin amazing, but it also lacks an object / symbol library system. Both programs have different goals tbh. CSP is frame by frame, flash is generalized but can also do object animation. CSP does things shot by shot, flash can do the full gamut in one file. CSP is also a blast to draw in, flash is not :V

5:00 did that circle drawing really get read as a square?
if you have the wrong setting on yes that will happen
you use pencil to plot out lines quickly, then selection tool to correct them. Its an alternative to pen tool (which i cant use for shit)

Yeah, it's hard when the brush tool looks all squiggly and wobbly and wei--

The salt is strong with this one. And I'm over here like where was this all my life.

Time to crank out the salt machine.

Please give the link, help out a fellow animator/artist/whatever you call a person that uses flash.
yes it does
How tf did that stay in for so long?
you sound like Alan Becker but with swearing lmao
the problem with the pencil tool is you've got the smoothing set too high, and shape recognition is on, so you want to go to and turn it off.
This video actually was pretty nice, it brought smile to my face
I don't think I'll need to know how to draw in Flash anytime soon but I appreciate the content in the video.
Zedrin tutorials should be called Zed-ed
This actually will provide help with my drawing! Never knew about the different paint parts you were going over in the beginning
to make the pencil tool stop doing the horrible post-correction, go to Edit> Prefrences> Drawing>
then turn off Recognize Lines and Recognize Shapes.

Here's a nice tip that you can do with a mouse
Pen tool.

also change your setting of the pencil tool from line to ink

i have no idea what could be causing that. It sounds like a tablet issue more than a program issue.
Actually there's a way to make the pencil tool smooth
Yeah, I'm aware. I posted the response on that. I still would prefer to use the pen tool if i need lines like that.

What do you think about the new Paint Brush Tool in animate CC? (The modified pencil)
Also if you want I know how I can get you animate CC for free
Don't have animate CC
And since I animate professionally I have zero interest in piracy.
thank you, thank you so fucking much.
