This was the very first Nightwish song I've encountered and was immediately captivated. I was around 14 at the time. I'm 31 now and Nightwish is still one of my favourite bands of all time.
Since 1998, I listen to at least one Nightwish song every day. As a child of the 70s, I listen to other singers and other bands, in different genres, but only Nightwish fascinates me so much.
This song was written before The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Nightwish seem to be huge fans of Tolkien. I can't imagine how happy they were by the movies.
i am half Finnish, and i ask do you (not finnish persons) all of you , do you know what is "Tapio" and "Mielikki" in this song? Tapio is an ancient Finnish god of the forest. Mielikki is a female Finnish Forest Spirit. :)
Another great song from this album!!! Probably one of the first Nightwish songs I could hear many years ago!!! By that time Nightwish already had a wonderful quality!! Personally, I really love this album.. Greetings from Ecuador!!! Lago Gris (Gothic Metal Band).
This song inspired me to create my second own character for my own fantasy story.... These song always helps me when I am working on my fantasy dolls....I often have it on REPEAT ONE for DAYS.... I LOVE IT!!!! Tarja also is a magical woman, so her voice helps creating...
HAVING A FANGIRL MOMENT. This song is pure genius! This totally sums up all my fantasy fandoms... LOTR, Belgariad/Malloreon, GoT... I think i'm in love..
The song doesn't necessarily have to be about one thing. It's a combination of fantasies; LOTR, maybe, but also folk tales. Beauty and the Beast is mentioned, and a witch and her broomstick; Madrigals, and Neverland. The singer's dreams carry her upon the elvenpath, where all kinds of fanciful worlds pass her by.
slashes22 A madrigal is a secular art-song. It was widely popular in the Renaissance era. A vocalist (or vocalists) had to be extremely expressive with singing a madrigal - wring every bit of meaning our of the poetry (Francisco Petrarcha's was highly popular to madrigal composers), whether it be by gestures, dynamics (volume), tempo (speed - example: "scurrying" or "running" would be set to a faster tempo than "crawling" or "walking"), or Augenmusik (literally "eye music" - patterns to lyrics usually only musicians can perceive - like a line "di cinque perle" (five pearls) being set to five whole notes (which resemble five pearls). A well-known one is "Solo e Pensoso" (1599) by Luca Marenzio (1553-1599).
It's the honesty of there worlds Ruled by magic and mighty SWEERDS! It's always so fun to research the early times of favorite bands. These silly little things are so cute :3
English is such a silly language sometimes. It's only logical that "swords" and "worlds" would rhyme, and yet they don't. I totally agree; listening to that bit makes me smile too.
Dodging sweerds like a nerd. Cute as fuck though. Can you even imagine trying to do you first demo in finnish? Absolutely mental even contemplating it!!
Mike Terzakis Tutankhamen is good, however The Carpenter is probably the Nightwish song I like the least and probably the only one I can say I really hate.
the man speaking during the song ("and then the dark lord learned how to craft the ring making, and made the master ring"), is an opening speech from the animated lord of the rings movie, so i guess reminding you of the lord of the rings is their point :)
This is a song I don't know of Nightwish. I discover them with the Album Once in 2004, I fall in love with the orchestration witg metal form. Century Child is ma favorite album ! I was curious what they had done before being an orchestral metal band and it feel nice. It's look like the debut of the band, a sound from the mid-90s with a bit of the late 80s rock going through my ears. I like it even if feels too much RPG's but I do love elves and celtic fantasies stories! ^^ It is very interesting !
Finnish are only 5 million in this world but apparently their influence in the world grows day by day And now with beautiful 35-year old prime minister (she's beautiful but I will still have to see about her politics... she talks about Woman Power but she is not doing anything to help the nurses on strikes... workers rights being evaporated... nothing new... left or right it's always the same CRAP)
I can't say enough bought this band they are the best in the world. They proven they can continue after 3 singers. Which I think floor is the best... No disrespect to the others cos what they done with them is brilliant
Lord of the Rings! Oh my gosh! When I heard those couple parts, I could not stop jumping! Especially the beginning where Tarja sounded a bit like Galadriel then the rest of the song! I really, really, love this song now!
Tuomas Holopainen writes about fantasy worlds in general; his own experiences there-of. Mythology and fantasy interweave seamlessly. As a Finn, of course he'll write about Finnish mythology more than most but also the greatest fantasy works. That's not the whole point of the song though (nor of other similars, such as Wishmaster).
I think that this song could be a tribute to fantasy in general. There are a lot of references to the Lord of the Rings (the Dark Lord, Bilbo, the elven smiths who created the Great Rings, the Master ring, the elf-folk which was adored by Sam...), Sparhawk (is another character from fantasy books), Willow could be the main character from the film by Ron Howard, and the classic stories like Beauty and the Beast, or Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs...
Yes it is - that elven smith part. But there are also links to Finish mythology (Tapio Bearking, Meiliki, Bluecloak) and also some links to german mythology I belive.
This song collects all charters in stories, like LotR and many others. There is a mention of Bilbo, and other LotR charters, and also the beauty and the beast, the seven dwarfs, goblins and other legendary charters, not ONLY the Lord of the Rings.
It is. The Rings of power, the Dark Lord (Sauron), The master ring (The Ring), Bilbo, etc are all a clear reference to LotR. Either way, both are great.
I always take Lord of the ring like a metal movie, so ofc they always have LOTR in metal songs. Like Elvenpath from Nightwish, and then they have Sabaton - Shadows. I like lord of the rings, warhammer and world of warcraft is the most game/movies who are in every metal songs.
+Aneth Frostwind It's not entirely about the Lord of the RIngs. There are many references to the LotR but also to many other fantasy novels and stories. This song is more about Fantasy in general...
Behind? Well, this song is in part inspired by LotR, definitely. It also draws heavily upon Finnish mythology and some things from Norse mythology (and phoenixes & al.) and Margaret Weiss/Tracy Hickmann novels (not sure if this one has verses from there but Wishmaster does for sure)
How is this a song for Lord of the rings when they are mentioning Sparhawk, pixies, Tapio, Mielikki, the 7 dwarves and Beauty and the beast xDDD...? They are talking about all kinds of fairytales, finish gods, and characters from famous fantasy writers...
@constantine131 semi sad about the mid/ending of the song, it starts of so open minded alowing your mind to follow "its" path, just to clash with the images of a well writen book/movie... I feel that they are more refering to a hero on a journey to free the world of its "devines" and their selfrightious behaviour. (rings symbolising ranks via accets, rather than spiratual standings... hense the dark/careless vocals/sounds used during its introduction)
Not high, just finnish. Basically the same thing, haha. Anyway, this song is kind of a mixture of Tolkien and the finnish folklore. Middle-earth would be much better with sauna's, though. :D
What do you mean "behind The Lord Of The Rings"... The first book was finished 1933, the other two in the 1950s... so how can this masterpiece be behind the masterpiece of JRR Tolkien?

You can hear Gandalf around the end "But then the Dark Lord learned the craft of ring making"
There were these books, you know...
@@IvailoStoianoff You didn't get what I said at all, did you.
My favourite Nightwish song. Underrated imo.
i am half Finnish, and i ask do you (not finnish persons) all of you , do you know what is "Tapio" and "Mielikki" in this song? Tapio is an ancient Finnish god of the forest. Mielikki is a female Finnish Forest Spirit. :)
there is peoples who not know that so i tell that :)
Thats very nice information. Learned something new. Something I care about c: Thanks to you.
Thank you :)
the finnish mythology is amazing. I like the myth of Kokko
Thank you very much. Greets from Serbia.
People complaining about the lyrics crack me up. Who cares? I'm here for the music. They could be singing Fe Fi Fo Fum and it's still amazing.
Another great song from this album!!!
Probably one of the first Nightwish songs I could hear many years ago!!!
By that time Nightwish already had a wonderful quality!!

My favortie Nightwish Song!
Incredible song and Solo!

Allso: In finnish folklore there are gnomes living in homes, usually in the farmhouses and they live in saunas or sheds :)
Taffoman that's why Finns have saunas...for the gnomes...now i understand
xD
What is a Madrigal?
Plus, Tuomas is a FANTASY-MAGIC fan, remember.
slashes22 A madrigal is a secular art-song. It was widely popular in the Renaissance era. Still jamming in 2023 and always thank you for the songs! ✌️🤘🔥❤️
It's the honesty of there worlds

OR:
"It's the honesty of these WORDS
Ruled by magic and mighty SWEARS..."
..but whatever floats your boat, I guess... ;)
@@Asathon The official lyrics say Swords.
This is the best song in Angel Fall First.
+Zachary Desotelle They are all good...
+Marcus Abrahamson No way. Tutankhamen is awesome.
Tutankhamen, Angels Fall First and the Carpenter are also good, so is Astral Romance if you ignore Tuomas' lyrics :P
Mike Terzakis Tutankhamen is good, however The Carpenter is probably the Nightwish song I like the least and probably the only one I can say I really hate.
Marcus Abrahamson why?
Historical song of the band. A clear epic song.
0:33 the subs are wrong, it should say "super classy nightwish guitar sound"
The lyrics from Nightwish never seem to disappoint me :)
Too bad the content creator couldn't get them right. It doesn't take much to look up lyrics instead of relying on your faulty ears.
the man speaking during the song ("and then the dark lord learned how to craft the ring making, and made the master ring"), is an opening speech from the animated lord of the rings movie, so i guess reminding you of the lord of the rings is their point :)
I, too, enjoy partaking of the mushroom and walking the elvenpath.
unifieddynasty I prefer having the Triforce
Old School nightwish

God, this is so good.
I've been listening to this song for close to (if not longer then) 20 years, and i never realized what the lyrics were about.
I love this song! Amazing tribute to Lord of the Rings! ... Does anyone else think the narrator sounds like Anthony Hopkins?
Elvenbath.
+Hamster Munchies hahaha
You are one of my favorite people ever now.
I never noticed this for whatever reason until I saw this comment. :)
and swerds
I hate you for saying what I was thinking
Elvis sight
According to Finnish tradition, home gnomes were very particular of having the sauna warm from them.
Still are. I try to keep mine happy.
haha inside jokes, explain please, this sounds hilarious
perkeleeee 🤣🤣🤣

My Elvenpath
I don't speak in english, but a like as she sing.
es lo mejor nightwish . me encanta esta buenisimo
I'm reading "The Hobbit". I need this song! It's a compulsory soundtrack!
A fellow David Eddings fan?! FINALLY AFTER YEARS OF SEARCHING!
Best lyrics so far haha stil love it !
Lord of the Rings! Oh my gosh! When I heard those couple parts, I could not stop jumping! Especially the beginning where Tarja sounded a bit like Galadriel then the rest of the song! I really, really, love this song now!
Haha, I love how she says "swords"...
"Sverd"... it's the Norse word for "Sword"
This song perfectly describes me.
Where on Earth do they come up with the lyrics?! They're amazing.
best intro ever
No way. The song that mentions elves, the Dark Lord and the Master Ring cannot possibly be about The Lord of the Rings. :o
SONG IS SOO SICK!!!
Tuomas Holopainen writes about fantasy worlds in general; his own experiences there-of. Mythology and fantasy interweave seamlessly. As much as I love Nightwish...I'm listening to this because I've been listening to "Chicken Attack" for hours...
I think that this song could be a tribute to fantasy in general. So much for thick accent. But this fucking album saved my life.
Actually, Tapio is the Finnish god of the forest, and Mielikki is his wife in Finnish mythology.
BILBO!!!
WTii HAS DIRECTED ME. I CAME FROM THE PAST, 3 MONTHS AGO THIS SONG WAS THE BGM FOR AN INTENSE BATTLE AGAINST THE SELF!
@LadySaturn11
The guy who composed this is a fan of LoTR and, the name bilbo is in it. (and more reverences)
I nearly ruined my Angels cassette, and got so exited when Oceanborn became available in Hungary. And that kids was 20 years ago. :)
Beautiful lyrics
This reminds me of the Bosmer from Skyrim. :-)
Yes it is - that elven smith part. But there are also links to Finish mythology (Tapio Bearking, Meiliki, Bluecloak) and also some links to german mythology I belive.
A good one!
Alright, so I revise my statement, it's about fantasy in general. Damn good song either way.
Is this Song a tribute to famous fantasy books?
Me inquieta saber que haría Floor Jansen con esta canción. creo que esta es de esas canciones intocables que Tarja hizo memorables y únicas en su vos.
Lolo Melone true
Ya la canto en vivo
She sang it live in Baltimore yesterday (or the day before, idk) and... it's in a lower key :( and not as good as Tarja's version, in my opinion.
Floos sangs this and she spells correctly "Elvenpath"!!
Hace trampa :P, bonita, pero trampa.
yes, in the song's lyrics, the lyrics when the guy talks matches up correctly.
This song collects all charters in stories, like LotR and many others. There is a mention of Bilbo, and other LotR charters, and also the beauty and the beast, the seven dwarfs, goblins and other legendary charters, not ONLY the Lord of the Rings.
nice quality bro! :)
is this the original recording or remastered version?? I'm searching for the originals
It is. The Rings of power, the Dark Lord (Sauron), The master ring (The Ring), Bilbo, etc are all a clear reference to LotR. Either way, both are great.
Elvenpath: the path where Tarja met Tuomas. Lol
excelente canción
mieliki is there too in Dark Elf by Salvatore
This song is quite similar to the style of Stratovarius.
Oh Tolkien, that's awesome
Bilbo lol
I LIKE Nightwish
Awesome!!
aww yiss ♥
Is this song about Lord of The Rings?
+Aneth Frostwind yep, as you can see, there is a quote about Sauron
I always take Lord of the ring like a metal movie, so ofc they always have LOTR in metal songs. Like Elvenpath from Nightwish, and then they have Sabaton - Shadows. I like lord of the rings, warhammer and world of warcraft is the most game/movies who are in every metal songs.

+Aneth Frostwind It's not entirely about the Lord of the RIngs. There are many references to the LotR but also to many other fantasy novels and stories.
This song is more about Fantasy in general...
It's about the world of fantasy. From modern fantasy like Lord of the Rings to historical fantasy like pagan mythology.
I found the elvenpath... it leads to my bookshelves! :D
This was the first Nightwish song i ever heard(no really!)
I love all the references to two finnish mythology gods, and lord of the rings.
This would oddly be my pick for company karaoke
An instrumental version of this would be amazing. Vocals aren't bad but I fucking love the instrumentation more than anything else.
ruclips.net/video/4GBZww94f9s/видео.html he did a great job on this
Yes their are several refences to Tolkien
Not only stories, but ancient finnish religion as well. (Tapio and Mielikki)

cool
HOLY SHIT THAT SOUND CLIP IS FROM THE LoTR ANIMATION
Now I understand what Toumas meant when he said he was emabarased of these lyrics :D

+curryvid Mielikki is The Forest Queen from "Forgotten Realms"
is this original recording or remastered? I'm searching for originals
the song is a fan song made by nightwish for the book and movies series LoTR
We need much those Bluecloak now in tough days....
ever time I hear this song it always remains me of
lord of the rings

@emi282 thanks
The lord of the rings part is literally from the cartoon, which was released before the movies
Why she says "Elvenbaph"??
Hahaha
@LadySaturn11 i think this songs is behind The Lord Of The Rings but im not sure...
It is. According to Wikipedia.
@Drewamania that is because than it is easier to sing... She sings opera, and than you can't do it like the way it has to be spoken

in the 1st verse i actually think it is "the oncurving p@h " & not uncarven
