    This tutorial demonstrates a process for mapping temperature data onto the sun path chart, and then establishing a shading mask. The mask is transferred to a Shading Protractor from which shadow angles can be determined for overhangs and fins.

    While most shading design explanations are focused on the use of VSA (vertical shadow angle) and HSA (horizontal shadow angle), the EPA (End Profile Angle) is not usually among those considerations taken into account, or is not explained enough. That is my perception.

    I don't quite understand how the End Profile Angle works in order to increase the size of the overhang and block the sun.

    Can you link a solar protractor as neat as yours?

    What if the EPA would have been 90 degrees to both sides, instead of the 30 on the west and the 60 on the east? What kind of shading mask would have produced? I have many doubts on the EPA sorry. Can't find a suitable tutorial for this.

    i think this formulas are more accurate; HSA=AZI-ORI & VSA=ARCTAN(TANALT/COSHSA) than just reading solar protractor to get the right angles.

    Could you explain how you passed from the sun chart to the chart with HSA and VSA angles?

    If I want to cast a 5~10km diameter shadow on earth by using a giant satellite( assuming round plane shape) in space, any idea or software can help to simulate the size and altitude of the satellite ?

    Why do you use the dry bulb Temperature setting on the plot, and not the tilted Surface Radiation setting?

    • @cgtrudell
      @cgtrudell  3 года назад +1

      We are plotting the times of year when the temperatures are above the comfort zone in order to determine the times when solar shading is needed. I don't think the tilted surface radiation data would give you this information.

      @@cgtrudell Would you use the "Direct Normal Radiation" Timetable plot instead of the "Dry Bulb temperature"?.... The reason I ask is that my "Sun shading chart" comfort zone reflect the "Direct normal Radiation" plot comfort zones instead of the "Dry bulb temperature" timetable plot that you are using...

    What if my window is not facing south but 132 degrees from north or 42 S from E ? Do I have to calculate tg42 for every overhang or there is elegant solution?

    Does the east and west in the HSA and VSA chart change depending on the Hemisphere?. Im from the Northern Hemisphere.

    • @josecarlosfigueroavega8475
      @josecarlosfigueroavega8475 3 года назад +2

      I think orientations remain unmoved, regardless of the hemisphere (North, South, East and West always in the same place). You only rotate the HSA and VSA charts in order to meet the correct orientation of your window.

    What if I don't have a red zone in the sun path diagram?

  • @dhwaneekolage6586

    HSA was supposed to be taken from the centre of the window sill. In your diagram its from the side/ extreme end of the window. I dont think its the correct method.

    how to determine the shading mask?

    • @cgtrudell
      @cgtrudell  3 года назад +3

      There is interpretation and judgement needed when determining the shading mask. For fixed shading devices, you may have to block some spring sun positions in order to also block these same sun positions in fall, even though in spring the sunlight would be a welcome heat source inside the building. For this reason, the shading mask is shifted toward the afternoons when overheating is likely to occur, and is pulled back to ensure that the coldest months are not shaded.
