After more than 10 years taking med for high bp, I was told by doctor I have a white coat hypertension. My bp at home is below 120/80 but goes to 150/90 every time I visit a doctor.
Definitely pressure is always up when I’m at the Dr 🤦🏿♀️ not to mention as soon as I get in the room they checking pressure so yes it will be up cause I’m not officially relaxed yet!!! Thanks for the advice!!! I will make sure to keep this in notes when I’m at my appointment from now on😤
I can relate to white coat syndrome, my BP is always elevated when my doc checks it. At home it's just fine, and I'm using an Omron M3 since it's well tested and approved for home testing :)
I go to a very well known teaching hospital/medical school. There, the dean of the medical school offered a free dinner at any restaurant to anyone in the medical school that could list correctly the 11 steps of measuring BP. There were about 700 students and only one got it right. If these ppl can't get it right, can the nurse in the doctor's office get it right- or even the doctor? Do not use the auto BP cuffs- these are known to overestimate BP by about 10% (Maybe they got better since I researched this). I got this info from very good medical researchers. I do my own and its always much lower than that in the office. Take a series of measurements, throw out the first bc its always high. In fact, the British Hypertension Society recommends taking BP readings until they do not change- this is your true BP.
Years ago, I took a continuing education course in an exercise science lab at a local university. One of the grad students got an unusually high BP from me. I was in my mid-30s and fit. The professor scolded the student for overinflating the cuff. The professor said something like, “Look at him. Do you honestly think his blood pressure is that high?” The professor told the student to palpate my radial pulse and inflate the cuff until the pulse disappeared to determine how much she should inflate the cuff. She repeated the BP after allowing me to rest for a while and it was normal.
I’m only 71 and have high blood pressure yesterday it was 145/91, last nightcap/94 This morning 148/94. I just use a home job My diet consists of whole Beetroots, Chia seeds, Flaxseeds, Rosehip Hibiscus tea I use to ride my MTBike every where. My trail dog is really good, but she has been lame in her front legs Now I go for a stiff walk. Last new year I went on a tramp/baclpacking I do eat well, I have salt in my diet it wouldn’t happen other wise big teaspoon My theory is we need salt. What is needed, the electrolytes and salt is in there I don’t eat processed food, except dried food I’m struggling to get my blood pressure down Cheers have a great day
In many of the doctors offices I’ve been in, I would’ve had a more accurate reading if the janitor had taken my blood pressure! it’s rare when they do it correctly (Even the doctors.) 🙁
I went to Emergency room for wax block in my ears- could not get into an ENT so went to ER- when they check my BP it was 138//95 at end of visit they checked again it was through the roof- anytime I go to doctor I get three different readings! Why? Never same number
Doctors need to take a medical history and listen to the person. How can a doctor know how to help a person when they know nothing about the person. If there is an effect there has to be a cause not just a blood measurement. I don’t get white coat symptom, I get upset because of the lack of attention and not listening to me and sometimes their rude attitude .
Thanks insurance companies and their share holders. The resulting "McMedicine" is responsible for so much bad health care, and most of the 9 things here can be traced back to cost-saving measures that most medical facilities have instituted as a result. Skill costs extra. Time costs extra. Educated, customized, genuine "listen to the patient" care - costs extra. So those things aren't available. My friend signed up for concierge/subscription medical care, because she can afford it. The difference in the care she gets from her dr. is just a whole world of difference.
The automatic machine causes excruciating pain. So I've never trusted it. My GPs don't use the old style equipment any more. When i was younger my BP was nicely low. It changed when they introduced them.
The assistant in my Dr office has me sit and everything else is correct BUT she has my arm hanging straight down along my side. With that and clear white coat syndrome it's always sky high. I mentioned it to the Dr but she was annoyed when I discussed it with her. I take it at home and bring the readings in each visit.
Last time I had bp taken: nurse weighed me, reminded me I had gained 6 lbs., pelted me with questions, had me sit on exam table with feet dangling off floor, arm was hanging by side, bp cuff was placed over long sleeve & VERY painful using a machine & suffering with bronchitis and having breathing difficulties and feverish. Is anyone surprised my bp was 181/80??? Dr was more concerned with high bp than the fact I was gasping for air. Actually rx'd bp meds, told me bronchitis was viral, take otc meds, rest, drink water and rushed me out door in 20 min. I am disgusted, frustrated, and now on the way to hosp ER.
The office I go to always uses the automatic cuffs and they are so tight they bruise my upper arm. It is extremely painful. I get high readings with the automated system but when the DR uses manual it’s a much lower reading. I sometimes get asked which arm which I know is wrong.
Can iron pills make pressure go up??? I only take my iron every other day but when I take my pressure pills with the iron my pressure be up more than when I take just my pressure pills 🤷🏿♀️
What do you recommend for the "old time" method - stethoscope and hand pump up cuff and gauge assembly? Thank You for your short, yet comprehensive, videos on blood pressure.
@@AdamJStoryDC Any brands/sources for stethoscope and hand pump up cuff and gauge assembly you could recommend as being 100% up to the task that are yet fairly priced? Thank you
Small arms, too large of a cuff. Automated machine. When it’s high, they take the cuff off and check my B/P on the other arm right afterwards. This is done with one doing the procedure and another asking questions. Results? Much higher B/P than normal….white coat syndrome.
Does the year the machine matters? Should they be replaced? I realized when I bought my first machine in 2020 it was already 3 years old. A few weeks ago I ordered another one and the numbers were always off compared to my old so I sent it back! I’m still using my 5-6 year old monitor lol..
I Suffer from Extreme White Coat Syndrome b’cuz of All that’s happened to me in hospitals/so my BP is thru the roof at docs office…Any Help, Suggestions will be Appreciated…Thank You 🇺🇸🇨🇱🇺🇸

I’m never in a rested state in the cardiologist office! My blood pressure is always lower when at home compared to the doctor’s office.
Me too, the other videos really helped with that

Thank you for the education.
Our pleasure!

My cardiologist always uses the "old fashioned" blood pressure machine. Yay!

Are you stressed at the doctors’ office?

A blood pressure test shouldn’t be extremely excruciating. Ask them to use a manual one.

Why would she be annoyed that you’re stressed to be there?
EXACTLY! In Germany the white coats have hyperbolized EG....irrelevant what's the speciality 😢
Thats very helpful info, thanks doc
Glad it was helpful!
I've also experienced excruciating pain when using automatic machine and my BP is usually high
Have the doctor use a manual test. So much more accurate.
Wow, just wow because i think a lot of people are on meds for the reason
Yep!
My PC said they don't pay attention to the bottom number anymore. What the heck?
Yes! I have poor blood pressure with the electric machines.

The manual one is more accurate.
In a previous video on BP, you mentioned that BP should not be taken on the right arm but only on the left arm. What is the reason for that?
My blood is low when I take medicine but when I don't take medication it will spike up when I am stressed why
I found best way to avoid HI BP Is to stay away from DOCS OFFICE 😅 Human error ? not every staff member does this correctly. .
Is peanut oil good or bad for BP?

One doctors appt left bruising on my arm. I now refuse blood pressure with an automatic machine.
That’s crazy. A blood pressure exam should not bruise you.
The link to the blood pressure device was incorrect. The link was for beet powder. Could you provide an updated link please? Thanks.

Is it 4ighr to take your blood pressure 3 times, average the last 2 numbers and record that?
Can the automatic BP machine get correct readings after measuring many patients?
Does the year the machine matters? Should they be replaced? I realized when I bought my first machine in 2020 it was already 3 years old. A few weeks ago I ordered another one and the numbers were always off compared to my old so I sent it back! I’m still using my 5-6 year old monitor lol..
They do wear out and have to be replaced. Didn't I mention that on the video? If not let me know.

Uhh it's easy once the needle drops you have the pressure.
