I like the raw energy of the unedited song, it sounds like it came out in the 80s.
The edited one sounds like a re-recorded version in 2007 from the same band 🙂.
    Amazing vocal performance btw 🤘🏻.

I like this concept. Cool stuff, man. Maybe try doing this idea but with mixing. That could be cool. Just imagine big 80s gated reverb on today’s fast paced modern metal. Looking forward to that Static-X cover by the way! 😜

The edited version is more for getting your track out to the masses and into Spotify and many other platforms.
The unedited version can be if your band can replicate the track live.
I never heard of King X before but ill take a deeper dive into their material.
With your current experience in mixing and recording would you re record your older songs in the future?

I agree. The second one is great as a demo, or pre mastered.

Second one 100 percent!!!! Sounded way more organic and I could hear energy in it. Your timing is pretty spot on and you’re like a human click anyway lol. Just my preference.. but enjoyed the second one more

Was definitely more organic, I ate a bunch of sprouts before tracking it 😉

I think this is an excellent demonstration of the fact that quantizing, pitch correction, etc. are tools, and it is their tasteful application that matters. The first cover sounds good, but there is 'something' slightly unnatural feeling with the first track, which to me is especially clear during the bridge, but also rears its head during the sustained high notes. Our tools are made to operate within the restrictions of 12TET, and our voices (and quite a few instruments) aren't. Perhaps, then, it is as much the job of the editor or producer to be selective about which parts are to be edited and how.
All that said, the edited track still sounds really, really good. Your lead work on both tracks sounded great (despite your comment about not practicing enough for it), and you nailed both that slick riffing and dUg's astounding vocal track. Kudos!
Edit because I thought I paused at the end but there was more: I hesitate to agree with the salt analogy on the basis of it not being accurate for how salt works in cooking, but if it was it would be perfect. Regarding where fixes should be, I believe that the further downstream a fix is made, the less effective it will be. Something as simple as recording to a metronome will inherently sound better then fixing the result of a sloppy, out of time track later, for much less effort. Unless the point of the piece is to sound sloppy and out of time, in which case all the rules go right out the window.

Some very good points thank you! I think the thing that I would like to address most there is that playing to a click would still sound noticeably different in feel to time-aligning in the same tempo. There'll always be places where the instrument isn't quite hitting on the beat, which is one reason why it's very easy for me to notice when people make drum tracks with software for example.
The analogy oesn't have to be salt, could be herbs, ketchup, msg etc 😉
      Thanks again for your opinion!

I won't comment on which I think is "better" because they both serve different purposes. In my opinion, the second one "sounds" better (to me) because it's not time aligned and this allows the bass to poke through a bit more but granted, I've been kind of sick of how most mainstream rock music has been produced in the past 15 years or so.

My opinion if you can sing as great as you do I would NEVER touch the vocals during a scream. Autotunes takes away the primal feel. With drums if you have swing they shouldn't be corrected as far as being on the click. Just my two cents. There is a video of Bohemian Rhapsody autotuned and it's disgusting.

Thank you for your input, it certainly needs to be a careful process editing a good track for sure. And yes, if you were one of the best vocalists of all time you wouldn't need pitch correction!

I prefer the grungier, dirtier second live-ish version. Although the lead vocal track on both versions seem tentative at best. My feeling is to get a complete cohesive vocal track several takes may be needed. Honestly it didn't feel on either track that you were letting loose with the vocals and letting the music guide you and true emotion flow. Feeling the music is key to a great vocal performance. Also when you said you didn't want to pick a revered classic and then you chose Over My Head I cringed inwardly a bit. You picked arguably the most revered song in their canon aside from possibly Goldielox or Dogman. Both tracks needed to be more bass forward IMO it was buried too deep in the mix so there wasn't as solid as a bottom end as it needs.
Any other criticism is just me being picky about missing elements such as the hand claps and tinkly piano during the breakdown. Overall it was a great effort on a difficult to master song.

Thank you for your input and constructive criticism. I think to explain the 'revered classic' thing more, I was talking about 'Paranoid' or 'Kashmir' or 'Highway Star' which I believe I couldn't touch at all that's more well known by the general public. I went for King's X because in comparison they're a lesser known band and I wanted to also introduce more people to their music.
I agree with with missing elements, I was putting a spin on the live versions of their songs. Thanks again for the comment!

I preferred the second one. The pocket was so much better / had more groove on the second track even with the mistakes. The first version is stale and lifeless, no personality and just sounds over produced.
