+Miss Mary And her flexibility, bodyline and ARTISTRY. If I was a judge, I would score it higher than Biles' winning beam routine in 2014, and Kui did this in 1996.

What is sad is this routine should have been celebrated and highlighted on the NBC broadcast and it wasn't. Most people never got to see this absolutely stunning and gorgeous routine. It was the highest scoring beam exercise of the entire team competition from any athlete, with Shannon Miller and Roza Galieva tying for second place.

@garyj79 Chinese gymnast Yang Bo was the first to do these leaps in 1988/1989 and these leaps were named after her by the FIG. Most other nations avoided attempting these leaps feeling they could earn the same amount of points using other acrobatic skills.

Too bad she didn't make finals because she definitely would have medaled. Instead of following Mo, they should have focused on her.
I could imagine someone thinking "well she probably can't tumble..." after Mitch made that comment on how well the Chinese leap/jump, and then watching that acrobatic series immediately after...

Were any other countries @ the time performing leaps on the beam with the head taken right back?? cos it seems like only the chinese girls were doing them at the time!?!
@peepers2221 Nope, both Kui and Miller has a G element ONLY, full-in dismount (G) for Miller, and a full twist straight back (G) for Kui. I think everyone says Kui's routine was much harder because it's choreograpy is unique and difficult than Millers. Do you think that Kui's linkage of 6 elements (3 leaps to flip layout layout) is less difficult than Miller's mere flip layout layout, or switch leap to flip with 1/4?
@MsNoelle555 Totally agree with you. She takes so much risk in this routine and performed them well; I wish judges would take that account sometimes. These judges must have been watching some other routine because the fact that she didn't make the event final says how slanted the judging process is sometimes...
She did get the team bronze at the 2000 Olympics...although we kinda forget about her because she got injured on the second event for China in Prelims: vault. It was a shame that the Chinese didn't start on UB or BB in 2000, so that Kui could have done her routine injury free and possibly made finals!
this is like childs play compared to her 97 routine. 1996-Korbut flic 1997-rulfova 1996-variation of yang bo jump 1997-split leap AND variation of yang bo jump done in combination 1996-lots of balance checks, several form breaks, and little step back on dismount 1997-only TWO visible balance checks and a little hop on the dismount
+jeffy5482 Why is the Stag ring only a B? IMO it is more risky than most jumps and should be a D. So no one today is doing it and tons of gymnast do the switch leap ring because it is a D or E. And BTW, Kui did a harder beam routine in 1997. Instead of the split leap to Korbut, she did a Wolfe to a Rulfova. So her D score would be 5.7? So she can still medal in 2015...
A normal BHS LOSO LOSO combination gets 0.2 so it would be 5.6 but for a time when they didn't know the requirements, this is such a good D score. Some have less than a 5.0

@peepers2221 Again, it's the difficulty of the PRESENTATION and CHOREOGRAPHY of the routine. Then do you think Miller's 'Miller' is much difficult TO DO than Kui's 2 flips to full twist back salto? MAYBE the start value of Miller's routine is higher, as you have said, but Kui's PRESENTATION and CHOREOGRAPHY is much unique and uncommon. We won't see 3 leaps to flip layout layout again nowadays, right? That's the reason everyone says Kui's was much harder.

Yes...that's what a SV was for. when you perform difficult skills, you have a lot of risk in your routine, which should be rewarded; but you have risk not only of falling off, but also the risk of not medalling.
If you're referring to how gymnasts back then salto onto the beam and now they only climb onto it (cause I can't see Jd L's comment, sorry) this is because now we have a Difficulty Score, and only the 7 most difficult elements plus dismount are counted towards it, plus CR and connections.
