I think Kylo Ren is the face of the sequel trilogy in my opinion. Everything about him is compelling in a way that's not just rare in Star Wars, but in cinema as a whole. Adam Driver's body language and facial expressions also sell it for me. He's turning out to be my favourite Star Wars character of all time, and that's something in a franchise where Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader exist. Also, the way that J.J Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan found a way to introduce him as the "New Vader" only for the character's biggest insecurity in the first film being not able to live up to him was very clever. Thanks for this deep dive into his character, I'm glad he's getting the praise he deserves.

Ben Solo is so layered and complex. His life is so tragic, he has been manipulated and abused his whole life and was blamed for so many things (like the destruction of the Jedi temple) and took the blame for it because everyone believed he did it. For me the biggest mistake his family did, was to not tell him about Anakin and Vader. When he finds out like the rest of the galaxy he understands why everyone see him like a monster. It is so hard because I feel sorry for him, but understand the fears of Han and Leia, because they were tortured by Vader and Leia never forgave him. SO much tragedy in this story. The whole Organa-Solo family has lived through so much pain
I'm so very glad you noted the face he makes at 14:55! So many people missed it! And it wasn't just a face of pain but that of self-realization. He had just destroyed the person who had loved him most and severed his own connection to his past. There was now no going back. He had truly, and literally burned that bridge.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I have been on this topic for a while now cause I actually enjoyed these films. I can absolutely see their flaws but I've never been able to dislike them and a lot of why, you've explained brilliantly here.
I actually really like Kylo Ren. We've never seen any character in star wars regret the choices they've at such a profound level that it changed who they were. I like the acting differences between Kylo and Ben too, especially when handling a lightsaber-Kylo is more hunched over and uses big power swings and Ben is more upright and uses more graceful swings. At the end of TROS i thought disney was going to keep Rey dead and Ben was going to be the Skywalker that rose so I was disappointed.
Also, about the force awakens, I dont like that they outright told us who Ben's father was. I was hoping they would keep in ambiguous until Han calls him Ben in the walkway at the end
I am a huge huge star wars fan and the mythos Lucas taped into. I am also a grieving father of my 8 year old son and mother who both died last year. Anakin was always always always my character until this past year. I can't explain it but watching clips of kylo Ren help me deal with my grief. Perhaps it's being torn apart from his past. Perhaps it's feeling like so many mistakes were made there's no more hope. Regardless This has not only been one of the best analysis of Kylo but as the cyclical nature of the saga as a whole. Thank you for your positive attitude, insigh,t and time in explaining this tragic and compelling character so well.
Such a reasonable, logical and down to earth analysis!!! It's fun and serious at the same time! I like your videos but this is probably my favourite as of yet. Also, it's so nice to see fans (real fans) analysing the movies respectfully and, well, maturely. As a woman who is a fan of the franchise, it's been such a toxic environment while the topic was still fresh. Thank you for being so thorough and cool and reasonable!!!! Amazing analysis!!!!
I should've fisnihed watching the vidoe before I commented because you made the point to how Snoke explains why Kylo lost to Rey on Stakiller base. I don't understand how so many people can miss the imporntance and the whole point of this scene. If I hadn't spent so much time on writing my comment about the scene, I would deleted because you made my point. I love Kylo/Ben, he one of the best fictional character ever created in my opinion. He is well written and Adam is such an amazing actor. Adam using only his voice to express himself for most of TFA was more believable than most acting in SW before. I think all the cast of the Sequels is fantastic and did a great job. I couldn't agree with you more on everything you said. I've always thought the same thing about the battle between Kylo and Rey on Starkiller base. Snoke even explained in details to Kylo (and us) why Kylo lost that fight... Snoke to Kylo, a partial dialog between them. Snoke-"The potential of your bloodline, now I fear I was mistaken." Kylo -"I've given everything I can to you, to the dark side." Snoke- "Take that redicilous thing off. Yes there it is, you have to much of your father's heart in you young Solo." Kylo- "I killed Han Solo, when the moment came I didn't hesitate." Snoke-"And look at you, the deed spit your spirit to the bone. You WERE UNBALACED, bested by a girl who never held a lightsaber. You failed." It is so obvious when Kylo met with Snoke in this scene that he had lost a lot of his anger and conflict, he seemed defeated and broken, he looks like he has given up. There is no hint of anger in his voice. Snoke knows he is of no use to him if Kylo is not angry, so he humiliates and belittles him to ignite that spark of anger and hatred he lost. The importance of being balanced is mention so often in all the SW trilogied. If a force user is unbalanced they are conflicted, being conflicted means a person isn't sure about what they want or what they should do about it. Snoke explained so well the reason for Kylo losing to Rey, I don't understand how his specch to Kylo could go over any SW fan because SW fans should know why being balanced in the force is so damn important. Besides being wounded by Chewies bowcaster, he was conflicted and confused, both because he just killed his dad and what he feels for this girl Rey. He didn't want to kill Rey, he even offered to show her the ways of the force. Had he wanted to kill her he would've done that and done it fast, it is pretty obvious he is toying with her. I believe he even mentions the force when he has her pinned to an edge of a cliff, he want to know how strong she really is with the force, there is no way he would have given her that much time to tap into it instead of just killing her if that was not his goal for mentioning the force. In the comic about how Kylo Ren came ti be it is explained that her has a very curious nature, he is easily fasinated and he wants to learn and gain knowledge, probably something he got from Luke because Luke often took Ben and Lor San Tekka with him to look for ancient Jedi stuff. I love the Sequels, I love everything about them, they are just better than the other two trilogies in my mind. I wish ROS had been difftent and it could've been so much better but it is what it is and I am ok with it. It was a mistake to kill off Ben, I refuse to believe he is acually dead. He could've been with Rey after she died via their force bond when he brought her back to life. Because of their dyad he could do that without dying, they can toutch each other trough time and space without any harm. I have no problem with Palpatine returning because it makes sense, Palpatine told Anakin he knew how to cheat death so I don't understand why people are so angry about his returne and why people believe he was dead to begin with. I was sure he meant he could keep his spirit/soul seperate from the force after his phycical death, many Jedi can do the same, and the Jedi do not use the dark side like the Sith' do nor had accsess to dark side science like cloning.
When I saw him kill Han Solo my jaw dropped to the floor. Adam Driver was awesome in this role. Also I really hated that they killed him off. So much potential wasted again.
This really puts into perspective how even in "bad movies" there can be value. The sequel trilogy was inherently flawed, but it _could have been_ great if they had simply executed it better.
29:30 I think an important note about what Kylo says to Rey is that he’s saying exactly what he would want to be told about his parents. Forget about them, they don’t care about you, let them go
I feel like Kylo getting his helmet fixed is meant to symbolize him trying to hide or fix the cracks he was left with at the end of TLJ, and the beginning of TROS, from the reveal of Palpatine having been pulling the strings from the shadows all along and that now he's his own Vader. He's not regressing back to trying to be like Vader, but be his own version of Vader how he could.
Tbh, I didn't really like the sequels for a while, but at I look back there was a lot of potential there. It had a bunch of interesting concepts, Kylo being one of them.
Great job on this effort. You really bring up some great insight on this character and his interaction with Rey. It's good to see a RUclips channel focus on the Sequel Trilogy just like there are those that focus on just the OT or the Prequels.
I love The Rise of Skywalker but I do wish we got to see more of Kylo's inner emotions and thoughts. We needed to see the fallout of him learning Palps is alive and been manipulating him.
@@ADavid42 I don't think Kylo Ren isn't Vader 2.0, he learns that he can't be Vader in last Jedi. I don't love the sequels but when kylo Ren is on screen it makes me smile
Great job on your character study of Kylo Ren. Now as for why Palpatine broadcasted his existence to the galaxy, I always viewed it as a way to lure in Kylo Ren since he needs him as his ideal host.
@@jacobberg373 exactly this. In the year since TLJ, the First Order's offensive seems to have faltered somewhat and been met with (no pun intended) resistance. By announcing his return, Palpatine accomplishes three things: 1. He gives the First Order the credibility of the Empire. Where some on the outside might have seen some sort of leadership vacuum or scramble for power after Snoke's death, having the former Emperor reveal himself to be in charge instantly makes their threat credible. 2. He draws Ben and Rey to look for him. He needs one of them to complete the sacrifice and establish his return to power, and what better way than with his own voice? 3. Most importantly, he reminds people of the way they *felt* under the Empire. Andor has done a great job of showing us how Imperial rule poisoned everyday life and made people feel small and powerless. As Poe states in TROS, the First Order wins by making people feel like they're alone. So "I'm back, and I'm filling the galaxy with superweapons if anyone puts a toe out of line" is the ideal way to paralyze ordinary people with fear. After all, if people actually show up, they'll drown the First Order with raw numbers.
@@thegoldman25 I think he wanted both Rey and Kylo to know. Palpatine could've just communicated with them both, but chose not to. By broadcasting his existence to the galaxy he can play on Kylo's, and Rey's fears. Kylo is once again insecure about who he is and all eyes are on him. His position as the leader of the first order is in jeopardy. Rey is afraid of the darkness inside her and fears for her friends lives. Palpatine knew that Rey would come alone..so he needed everyone to know. It's a test. The people around Rey are afraid, amplifying her fear and clouding the light. Whoever overcomes their weakness and kills him is worthy of the Sith. Just my opinion.
Cinema therapy does have a wonderful video on this character to compliment this one and yes, they addressed the issues with his parents but Also that it made sense that when he meets Rey who is Also powerful, he sees her more his equal than most cuz he apparently learned one thing from his mother, Leia.
It's a shame TRoS is such a poor movie, because otherwise I really would like these characters more. You provide a compelling and optimistic look at Ben/Kyle, and for that I appreciate you
I loved this video. It's one of your best. It's a shame it doesn't have more views. You pointed out a lot of really cool details that I missed in the movies. Good job.
I always thought that Kylo talking to Han before his redemption is not him imagining his father but Leia projecting the last memory of Han she and her son both share. It also works in a technical sense because you know if Carrie hadn't pass away it would be her delivering those lines to Kylo not Harrison.
One of my favorite scene in this movie what was when the emperor said “become with your grandfather Vader I could not” I believe when the emperor said that Ben felt that becoming like his grandfather father Vader was pointless so when he was given a task to do he decided to rebuild his mask again because he’s going back to his old ways becoming a Jedi killer not like his father but as supreme leader and the leader of the knights of Ren. And for the Emperor tossing Ben to the pit It’s a call back when Vader threw him on the pit so he did the exact same thing to him but Last Skywalker survived and rose from the dark pit.
I don't care what anyone says Kylo is a fantastic character and the Sequels are overhated, yea their bad but so are the Prequels! Both of these Trilogies have big problem's but I can still enjoy both of them. But what I hate is when people are like "Oh the Sequels are so shit but the Prequels are the best thing ever!🤓" Both habe really big problem's but there are still good things in the movies!
I'm not sure how old the average RUclipsr is, but I'm going to be 30 very soon which makes me older than quite a few of them I think. I remember 15 years ago, when George Lucas was about as ridiculed a person as anyone, if the feelings of the internet are any indication. People happily applauded Red Letter Media's borderline personal mean spirited critisisms of Lucas at that time. Then the resentment towards Lucas conveniently stopped RIGHT as the resentment of Kathleen Kennedy began. It doesn't seem as though people gave up on the prequel hate train until appreciating the prequels became a convenient way to fuel a newer and more fresh hate train
Kylo is my favourite character in the first order reign trilogy, followed closely by Rey, Leia and Han I agree with your arguments against people saying “episode 8 is being fixed by episode my 9” which I never understood and found nonsense Which character studies do you plan to do next ? Are you only doing characters you like / think are great, 3 dimensional characters ?
episode 9 goes against presumed information A LOT - Palpatine was alive the entire time and pulling the strings - It retconned things about Rey's lineage - Snoke was a puppet of Palpatine
While the visuals dictionary for TFA stated that Snoke was alive when the Empire rose, that was only small outside material so it’s not that bad they retconned it (coming from someone who liked Snoke in episode 8 but didn’t like the answer we got for him in episode 9, still gold man makes me appreciate it and I’ve gotten used to it and I love exegol) While I’m also not a fan of Palpatine return as gold man said once, it feels in character and besides, it was 1000 times better than his return in legends and he wasn’t just out there for us to go “oh look, he’s back”, he had an impact on the story and while episode 8 did imply Rey is a nobody, I feel like being a Palpatine fits her character more and episode 9 is my favourite Rey film. On the island when I feel it implies Reys parents aren’t not important, it’s trying to tell us “it’s better she doesn’t know who her parents are” or “she shouldn’t never know, her parents never defined her destiny” which btw episode 9 continues Reys arc of mental insecurities about her identity consistent, so I don’t understand the big fuss besides that possibly, reasonable inconsistency that I didn’t find that noticeable So between all the sequels (or more episodes 8 - 9 as those 2 are the ones I’m referring to) : Reys main arc remains mostly consistent Kylo is consistent Leia is consistent Han is consistent The force bond idea introduced is kept consistent Finns character remains consistent Poe is consistent Hux is consistent Phasma is consistent (when it comes to appearing on-screen, she is cursed but in her book and comic she’s good) The minor characters like Ackbar (so annoyed they killed him like that), Connix and Wexley and I guess Rose Also something I haven’t heard anybody talk about is the message of people all standing together against an evil might no matter how strong they are since the first order reigns across the galaxy (something episode 9 expands upon from episode 8) TFA : New republic destroyed and resistance lights a spark of hope by destroying Starkiller base TLJ : Resistance relies on allies to help but nobody comes as the first order is taking over the Galaxy where planets are giving up, until Luke skywalker becomes a legend and inspires many people on the other side of the Galaxy TROS : As Poe talks to Zorii, they make you scared by making you feel alone, reinforcing the message of standing together as 1, which is the impact of the citizen fleets arrival and standing up for themselves I admit maybe episode 9 should’ve been longer (same amount of time as avengers endgame) to flesh this out more This standing up for themselves message I feel is consistent across all 3 sequels as a behind the story sort of message, and I like how the tv shows Star Wars resistance expands on it more I know I went on for a while, with a tiny exception I don’t get why people think episode 9 is changing episode 8 (As movies, they both have a different structure and feel different but I’d rather they feel different and be exciting, rather than for boring like episodes 1 and 2 and feel the same)
@@clonetrooper2003 so? By EU are you refering to the Star Wars expanded universe? If not I have no clue as to what "eu boom" is suppose to stand for. I've read a single SW comic book in my life, The Rise of Kylo Ren, I've read The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker. I am now reading the book "Bloodline, In the years before Star Wars: The Force Awakens," that is it for me. Star Wars comic books and SW books in general were not sold in the country I am from when I was a kid, it just wasn't a thing here and it is not a big market for that here, the books and the comics.
I think kylo ren is soooo underappreciated. Even I had to view it a few times to feel entire arc. Would love him to do cameos like Anakin in other stories. Such a waste he's never used. Good review of character in depth, thank you!
It’s arguments like this that just flat out annoy me. Kylo is nowhere near the most complex character in the franchise. We all know that the actual character with the most complexity is Klaud, it’s idiotic to think otherwise.
Came here from Frank James, he says Kylo Ren is an INFP personality type which makes sense to me now. he’s clearly introverted, intense feeling, able to perceive his parents intentions, misunderstood by everyone, very conflicted by everything, and 27:09 this scene shows his Intuition. Very cool
Only 800 likes on this amazing video is ridiculously low You changed my perspective of the last Jedi, I hated this movie but you made me realize the bond between the two is amazing
What's your opinion on Rey's "I did want to take your hand. Ben's hand" line? I've seen so many people saying that she's saying she only wants the good parts of him and I don't think that's true at all, but I'd like to hear your take on it.
I think that Palpy told Ren to 'kill the girl', knowing full well that Kylo would tell Rey about what happened to her parents. Rey would freak out (like she did in that scene) and either kill Kylo. Or go charging straight for Palpy and strike him down (which was what he wanted). It didn't play out the way he wanted because Rey Leia died and reminded Rey of who she doesn't want to be . Anyway I think that Palpy planned on ruling the galaxy through Ren. But when he found out that Rey was still alive he made her his number one plan (since they are genetically compatible) and he could transfer his soul into her body. And he would keep Ben as a back up.
It gets even sadder when you read the prequel comic about him. He explains that his name has always been a symbol of his curse. Being named after Ben Kenobi some old wise jedi he never met that people expect him to live upp to since he is Lukes nephew. Solo is a reminder that he is in his fathers shadow and he even knows that it isn't Hans actual name just somthing he was given by random and not having any real meaning behind it. Its also reveald that from a young age hell maybe even before he was born Snoke/Sidious was grooming him to the dark side. After already feeling like he was living in the shadow of his whole family and wanting to be someone else Luke almost trying to kill him made him leave. Even more so than Anakin Kylo shows the ultimate folly of the dark side and how unless you are a legit monster it will only consume you and ruin your life. Even after killing his dad and everything else he did he never was fullfiled pretty much always being depressed and not truly having a way out. Basically all his life he was just a pawn for Sidious to get what he wanted and he was basically doomed to this path from the start. Its Anakins tragedy but really just pushed upp to 11 with how sad it is.

I still say Finn was the awakening Rey was just stronger in the force. meaning once she felt a connection to Finn it supercharged what was a sleeping lion. who Kylo wakes fully during the interrogation.
The Rise of Skywalker is my favorite Star Wars movie, and Kylo Ren is a huge part of why, Adam Driver gives one of the best performances in all of Star Wars, and his and Reys relationship makes the movie for me. Thanks for the excellent video Gold Man!
TROS is your favorite Star Wars movie? Go watch A New Hope, The Empire Strikes back, or the two other sequel films. TFA and TLJ got good reviews from critics but TROS got trashed by critics.
I think that after the throne room battle, after Kylo is "freed" and has the perfect oportunity to turn back and STILL chooses darkness... that's when Rey starts seeing Kylo as a lost cause. No "he needs to figure this out on his own", just "there's no changing him". It shows in how Rey starts to hate him again after that, not completely, but still.
I genuinely believe Ryan Johnson meant to have Kylo completely reject the light at the end of TLJ, which makes his later redemption...a little dissapointing for me. It made sense, it was mostly well executed. It's just sort of predictable.
I think fans will come around to TROS the older it gets. Hell, I'm already starting to see it happening. We can harp on some of the misfires of the film all day, but I think since people have cooled off they see just how much good the film truly has. It's only true flaw imo is that it should have been longer by at least 15 minutes. not because "it doesn't make sense" because it does. You just have to extrapolate more. I think it needs to be longer to let moments marinated more. I think Disney was scared to release a 3hr Star Wars film. With that said, I genuinely love everything they did with Kylo/Ben and Rey in TROS. And it's a GORGEOUSLY made film with some of my favorite settings in the entire saga. I have to mildly call you out a little though. You say the whole snake thing is "unintentional foreshadowing." No man, it's completely intentional, lol. It's quite obvious that's the entire point. You don't have her call him a murderous snake, then have her heal a literal murderous snake monster, and THEN have her heal the figurative murderous snake without it being intentional. That's how themes work, lol. That's how set up and pay-off and callbacks work. I think you calling it "unintentional" does a disservice to the film and sadly perpetuates the "they didn't try/care" narrative for TROS. Just because the film left fans split, doesn't mean care wasn't taken it crafting it. Not to sound aggressive, I just wanted to counter that little moment in your video.
I didn't like the film the first time I saw it, but the second time I saw many things that sorprised me. Ben, Rey and Poe were characters that I loved more than the first time. And 100% agree with you with the idea of the film being longer, especially because all the characters (especially Fin) could have been more explored.
Honestly, I hated TROS the first time I saw it. I felt so let down and just downright confused. Then the second time I was like, "Huh. Okay, J.J., I see you." Then the third time I was like, "You the man, J.J.!" And now I really like it. It was, weirdly, one of those films that just got better and better with each viewing. For me, anyway. Don't get me wrong, it still has a lot of problems, and there were many things I thought could have been done better. But I appreciate it for all the good things that are there. Really, when you think about it, it's insane that they managed to produce the film they did, what with the time crunch they were on and Carrie Fisher dying and so, so many other variables that threw a wrench in their plans that they weren't counting on.
If there's any reason why kylo/Ben is so enduring and will always all we have to thank is Academy Award Nominee (Some day winner) Adam Douglass Driver he has absolutely no idea the impact he has made on this character and why people are still making such a big deal out of him he doesn't know the gift he brought bringing this character to life and immortalizing him. And you know what three or five years can go by and people will still be talking about Kylo/Ben Solo we don't need to have a movie right away he controls the conversation of "Star Wars" and lives rent free in our heads. (HAHAHA) I mean it we don't need to have another movie right away , The Boba Fett show can come and go, Obi Wan series can come and go like the wind, Cassian Andor's series can come in and out in a flash like the tide and mark my words everyone most everyone will still remember Adam Driver's performance as Kylo Ren/Ben Solo in the sequel trilogy.
Isn't it ironic that it was the fear that Ben would turn to the dark side that made his parents and Luke behave the way they did, which in turn is what gave him the final push to the dark side. Same goes for Anakin. The Jedi council were skeptical of him because they sensed darkness, but it was this skepticism that was a huge reason he went over to the dark side. Like if these folks hadn't prematurely reacted to a perceived threat,, the possibility of that threat actually materializing could have been minimized.
Anyway have you seen the two Official Star Wars Visions trailer in both English and Japanese, because I would like to see your reaction and what your thoughts about them?
I'll go even further out on that limb and say that Rey and Kylo Ren are the two best characters in star wars. I consider them a package deal. Though I'll acknowledge that I'm basing that almost entirely on the first two movies of the sequel trilogy, and the third installment did pretty much nothing to build on that for me. If anything it might've detracted. The first two are still there though.
Omg. Yes. Kylo is the main character of the sequel trilogy. Disney just sucks so much that they didn't notice. He's got the more compelling story. He goes through the most profound changes. He has an arc. He goes through the heroes journey.
Kylo Ren is my favourite (Star Wars) character and damn I get mocked by the dude bros ! I'm a girl so they feel they have to explain to me how he's a copy of Darth Vador, I must not know about the original trilogy you see ! Anyway, really nice to watch a well thought out video about the good and the bad of the sequels and how fascinating of a character Kylo Ren is ! Thank you, really great video !
Bwahahahhh!! "Nothing deep during the elevator scene." 🤣 Absolutely nothing but how deep Rey wants Kylo to go!! 🤪 They were fascinated/attracted to each other from spec one. If it was anyone else neither would have done the same. Aaahhhh Kylo's foot in mouth problems kick him in his ass when he tried to bring Rey into his side. I will however say Kylo's reaction to Luke on Crait is one of an abuse victim seeing the person that ignored the perpetrated abuse. "Fire every gun on that man." Is an absolutely irrational thing except for regressed trauma victim. I totally saw Rey/Kylo dynamic being reversed from TFA in TROS. Rey begins to slip to the Dark as her Palpatine roots seep to the surface. To me her entire attitude/mentality is her anger taking over. Her "Jedi" ideal is a complete surface sheen that soon melts off after his death.

I love how with each film, Anakin’s saber gets closer and closer to Ben wielding it.
Great catch
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I have been on this topic for a while now cause I actually enjoyed these films. I can absolutely see their flaws but I've never been able to dislike them and a lot of why, you've explained brilliantly here.
You're very welcome! Thank you so much for watching!
Finding out that The Gold Man watches Cinema Therapy was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

@@thegoldman25 Yes, I 100% agree!
Your 3 videos about Ben Solo is objectively the best Star Wars Trilogy I have ever seen
it's all now 1 video, but thank you!
Best video about Kylo Ren I’ve ever watched. Thank you so much! And I am very glad that there is someone who cherishes the sequels as much as I do!
Wow, thank you!
Forget about them, they don’t care about you, let them go
Disassembling my Kylo Ren Shuttle Lego because I am moving while watching a The Gold Man video on Kylo Ren is blowing my mind
god is telling you something
I feel like Kylo getting his helmet fixed is meant to symbolize him trying to hide or fix the cracks he was left with at the end of TLJ, and the beginning of TROS, from the reveal of Palpatine having been pulling the strings from the shadows all along and that now he's his own Vader. He's not regressing back to trying to be like Vader, but be his own version of Vader how he could.
Tbh, I didn't really like the sequels for a while, but at I look back there was a lot of potential there. It had a bunch of interesting concepts, Kylo being one of them.
This is a really great and insightful video, Kylo is my favourite character of the Sequel Trilogy

Great job on this effort. You really bring up some great insight on this character and his interaction with Rey. It's good to see a RUclips channel focus on the Sequel Trilogy just like there are those that focus on just the OT or the Prequels.
Thank you for watching!
I love The Rise of Skywalker but I do wish we got to see more of Kylo's inner emotions and thoughts. We needed to see the fallout of him learning Palps is alive and been manipulating him.

They wanted a villain they could kill without remorse, just like Vader 2.0. Too bad they couldn't imagine atonement.

I like Kylo, like a mother loves her broken son. But I love Ben Solo _more_
Great job on your character study of Kylo Ren. Now as for why Palpatine broadcasted his existence to the galaxy, I always viewed it as a way to lure in Kylo Ren since he needs him as his ideal host.
that could be right, but why didn't he just send a message to the first order directly then?
I always viewed it as a tool to put fear back into the Galaxy after it became inspired by Luke Skywalker's stand against the First Order.
I saw it as him just stroking his Sith Ego. He wants to be feared again.
@@jacobberg373 exactly this. In the year since TLJ, the First Order's offensive seems to have faltered somewhat and been met with (no pun intended) resistance. By announcing his return, Palpatine accomplishes three things:
Just my opinion.
i’ve never understood the hate that these movies get; i think they’re amazing
me too!
It also works in a technical sense because you know if Carrie hadn't pass away it would be her delivering those lines to Kylo not Harrison.
that could be the truth
Don't normally watch videos like this. But this was awesome thank you so much love the vid dude

thank you!!!
thought our opinions differ at the end, your analysis is definitely a very good one. Great work!
Glad you think so!
One of my favorite scene in this movie what was when the emperor said “become with your grandfather Vader I could not”
I believe when the emperor said that Ben felt that becoming like his grandfather father Vader was pointless so when he was given a task to do he decided to rebuild his mask again because he’s going back to his old ways becoming a Jedi killer not like his father but as supreme leader and the leader of the knights of Ren.
And for the Emperor tossing Ben to the pit It’s a call back when Vader threw him on the pit so he did the exact same thing to him but Last Skywalker survived and rose from the dark pit.
it's a great scene!
They should really do an Adam driver show as early kylo
thank you for appreciating and talking about the subtext in the scenes, i love them too!!
I don't care what anyone says Kylo is a fantastic character and the Sequels are overhated, yea their bad but so are the Prequels! Both of these Trilogies have big problem's but I can still enjoy both of them.
But what I hate is when people are like "Oh the Sequels are so shit but the Prequels are the best thing ever!🤓"
Both habe really big problem's but there are still good things in the movies!
that's exactly how i feel bro
You’re spot on with everything, except Rey and Ben clearly have feelings for each other.

@@thegoldman25 Geargre lucas tell you shut up
episode 9 goes against presumed information A LOT
- Palpatine was alive the entire time and pulling the strings
- It retconned things about Rey's lineage
- Snoke was a puppet of Palpatine
While the visuals dictionary for TFA stated that Snoke was alive when the Empire rose, that was only small outside material so it’s not that bad they retconned it (coming from someone who liked Snoke in episode 8 but didn’t like the answer we got for him in episode 9, still gold man makes me appreciate it and I’ve gotten used to it and I love exegol)
While I’m also not a fan of Palpatine return as gold man said once, it feels in character and besides, it was 1000 times better than his return in legends and he wasn’t just out there for us to go “oh look, he’s back”, he had an impact on the story and while episode 8 did imply Rey is a nobody, I feel like being a Palpatine fits her character more and episode 9 is my favourite Rey film. On the island when I feel it implies Reys parents aren’t not important, it’s trying to tell us “it’s better she doesn’t know who her parents are” or “she shouldn’t never know, her parents never defined her destiny” which btw episode 9 continues Reys arc of mental insecurities about her identity consistent, so I don’t understand the big fuss besides that possibly, reasonable inconsistency that I didn’t find that noticeable
So between all the sequels (or more episodes 8 - 9 as those 2 are the ones I’m referring to) :
Reys main arc remains mostly consistent
Kylo is consistent
Leia is consistent
Han is consistent
The force bond idea introduced is kept consistent
Finns character remains consistent
Poe is consistent
Hux is consistent
Phasma is consistent (when it comes to appearing on-screen, she is cursed but in her book and comic she’s good)
The minor characters like Ackbar (so annoyed they killed him like that), Connix and Wexley and I guess Rose
Also something I haven’t heard anybody talk about is the message of people all standing together against an evil might no matter how strong they are since the first order reigns across the galaxy (something episode 9 expands upon from episode 8)
TFA : New republic destroyed and resistance lights a spark of hope by destroying Starkiller base
TLJ : Resistance relies on allies to help but nobody comes as the first order is taking over the Galaxy where planets are giving up, until Luke skywalker becomes a legend and inspires many people on the other side of the Galaxy
TROS : As Poe talks to Zorii, they make you scared by making you feel alone, reinforcing the message of standing together as 1, which is the impact of the citizen fleets arrival and standing up for themselves
I admit maybe episode 9 should’ve been longer (same amount of time as avengers endgame) to flesh this out more
This standing up for themselves message I feel is consistent across all 3 sequels as a behind the story sort of message, and I like how the tv shows Star Wars resistance expands on it more
I know I went on for a while, with a tiny exception I don’t get why people think episode 9 is changing episode 8
(As movies, they both have a different structure and feel different but I’d rather they feel different and be exciting, rather than for boring like episodes 1 and 2 and feel the same)
I love your videos, you obviously put a lot of thought and time into making them. Thank you for the brilliant content you make.

you had me in the first half ngl
Came here from Frank James, he says Kylo Ren is an INFP personality type which makes sense to me now. he’s clearly introverted, intense feeling, able to perceive his parents intentions, misunderstood by everyone, very conflicted by everything, and 27:09 this scene shows his Intuition. Very cool

Great video! 💖I love Ben Solo, even though he did bad things. They should have let him live…
I totally agree! Thank you for watching!
They should have left him alive and make him get charged for his crimes instead of copying Return of the Jedi.
He’s like fire! Passionate and fiery
And he would keep Ben as a back up.
you very well could be right
It gets even sadder when you read the prequel comic about him.
I enjoyed the sequels. Kylo Ren was expertly designed all of the way down to his cracked lightsaber crystal.
Also Rey, my favorite is Rey's wtf look on her face. She is in just as much disbelief of her force abilities as her haters.

You say the whole snake thing is "unintentional foreshadowing."
No man, it's completely intentional, lol.
I certainly hope so, especially with all the new content tying into his return

I'm both disgusted and fascinated by Kylo's mental processes. He both disappoints and achieves their expectations. Good and bad.
(HAHAHA) I mean it we don't need to have another movie right away , The Boba Fett show can come and go, Obi Wan series can come and go like the wind, Cassian Andor's series can come in and out in a flash like the tide and mark my words everyone most everyone will still remember Adam Driver's performance as Kylo Ren/Ben Solo in the sequel trilogy.
you make fantastic points, thank you for watching miranda!
I’ll be honest with you I haven’t watch the video yet these are just observations I came up with on my own and I ruminated on for sometime
Why hasn't nobody called him kylo Ben it'd be hilarious like "hi kylo BEN" *gets chopped in half
Thank you for the video.
thank you for watching!
love him
Love these videos
thank you!
15:40 homeboy was also shot by a bowcaster which previously decimated a stormtrooper. Of course he lost
Anyway have you seen the two Official Star Wars Visions trailer in both English and Japanese, because I would like to see your reaction and what your thoughts about them?
i have and I'm excited!
TFA is my favorite of the trilogy especially AD, as Kylo I wish the Knights played a bigger part!
Your analysis is brilliant on the characters. This was an excellent video. Your videos should be used in classes at the college level.
Definitly my favorite Star Wars character.
he's one of my favorites too!
Hands down best character of Star Wars ever! And i grew up on the originals .
What if Ben woke up and saw Luke killing him as a force illusion, but in reality it was Luke trying to comfort Ben from the dark thoughts he sensed.
