I didn’t like this very much. And it’s for the reason you brought out: this is a performance of Mariah more than the song itself. Like a lot of Christmas carols, the beauty is in the simplicity of the melody. Mariah strays from the melody a lot to give us her riffs and range, so the integrity of the melody and message in the lyrics is pretty much gone. If you like Mariah, you’d probably like this performance. It’s more the singer than the song, and I’d prefer it the other way.
The song is better in Mariah way
She didn’t stray from the melody a lot and it was not over sung. It was just soulful
She made it her own, which is what an Artist is suppose to do. It is still recognizably “Hark, the herald angels sing.” Singing it straight through doesn’t show creativity.
