Some of the hostages are at present in Egypt. Hamas moved some of the remaining hostages to Egypt through tunnels located in Rafah Border Crossing. Some of the hostages, who were released in the first prisoner swap (November 24- December 1st), had been forced to swallow different kind of drugs before being freed. Those drugs had been developed in Russia, Iran and North Korea during the Cold War (1947- 1991) in order to punish spies and POWs. The most benign of these drugs make hostages docile. The most evil of them alters severely the brain functions. A good example of this could be seen in the case of Otto Warmbier. Otto was falsely accused of a crime in North Korea. During his imprisonment, he was given drugs (by mouth and intravenously) which altered severely his brain functions. He was released in a terrible condition, and died a few days after his arrival to the United States. In case of a second prisoner swap, Hamas has the order to give the most evil drugs to some of the remaining hostages.

Because as long as there is a hierarchy, "Some animals will always be more equal than others". Orwell said it better, but you get my point :) The nowadays West is toying with an idea that failed miserably in the past, regardless of the endless funds invested in it by the Soviets back in the day and endless lives lost in the name of it and as a result of it. To me, Socialism is like a nuclear suitcase and the Progressive West is like a baby, toying with it, pressing all the buttons and having wild tantrums, every time somebody tries to take that shiny new "toy" away from them, but not willing to take any responsibility, if god forbid they ever press the wrong button..
@@kobman4159 It could be that your personal experience of the Stalinist regime in the dying years of the Soviet Union colours your view of Marx and socialism. It is strange that you think the "nowadays West" is considering socialism, when our governments have never been more right wing and committed to viciously capitalist ideology. If you look around you, what do you see? Success of capitalism with united societies, workers paid well and in control of their lives, governments responding to their people? Obviously not. Socialism is not what was even tried in the USSR after the mid-1920s when Josef Stalin seized control. It is about liberating the working class to have power and control over our working lives, our commerce, our institutions, everything that we are. Capitalism is the antithesis: it forces us to work for a wage, to bow the knee to our employers in undemocratic workplaces where the vast wealth we create is stolen to enrich a few. If you refuse to believe that can be changed, then stay as you are. Did the end of the Soviet Union and its replacement with a red-in-tooth-and-claw free market capitalism result in any improvement in the lives of the Russian working class - as the Western economists claimed it would? Living standards plummeted, crime ran rampant and a privileged few enriched themselves on the remnants of the Russian state.
Why in 1948, UN declared Palestinian refugees have right to return back to their homes in cities such as Tiberias, Acre, Haifa, Jaffa, Led, Tulkarm, Askelon and others, inside the green line, what is now referred to as “Israel”. Until this day the Israeli army shoots at any civilian Palestinian who exercise their right to return to their homeland. In 2018, Palestinians organized “Marches of Return” south of the border near Gaza. Israeli army shot and killed 142+ and injured 16,000+ unarmed civilians. Did you know that Gaza hosts refugees that were originally from inside historic land of Palestine pre-1948.
After Britain's invasion of Palestine in 1917 and under its supervision, it facilitated the arrival of the new comers. It aided, enabled and armed them to take Palestine by force in 1948. They committed genocide and expulsion of more than 750,000 Palestinians, its original inhabitants. An event known as the Catastrophe or Al Nakba. Who were those new comers? They spoke English, Polish, Yiddish, German, Hungarian, Serbian, Romanian, Ukrainian, Russian and other languages from Western, Eastern Europe and Baltic sea countries after Britain’s invasion of Palestine in 1917. I was born in the USSR, so I'm pretty sure that my take on this might be slightly more refined than a random Western selective admiration of Trotsky.
Stalin was the final "evolution" of the so called "Socialism" in Russia.
It may have started with good intentions really, and it was all about "equality", "equity" and all the other well meaning and unachievable high ideals, followed by systemic elimination of everyone who questioned those high ideals, followed by paranoid elimination of everyone who was reported as allegedly having ideas, that questioned the regime and so on and so forth.
Because as long as there is a hierarchy, "Some animals will always be more equal than others". Orwell said it better, but you get my point :)
The nowadays West is toying with an idea that failed miserably in the past, regardless of the endless funds invested in it by the Soviets back in the day and endless lives lost in the name of it and as a result of it.
Not sure if they do it due to lack of understanding, sheer hubris or both.
The oligarchs and right-wing political parties that dominate the West have nothing to offer the working class but repression, austerity, dangerously growing militarism and endless work for little reward. There is a better way, as millions of people know.

Hamas wants the blood for PR and Egypt know the trubbel the Gazans cause and they want nothing to do with them.
Blam Hamas and ther backers for the war and Egypt for closing the border
@kaibri9287. But you did not have to attack Israel and take hostages on 07 October 2023. You are Arab from what country?
@bhimsenluchooman4046 I'm AMERICAN. In the USA from New York. This is the NY times. We don't all agree with Israel here. We have our own minds to think freely
@bhimsenluchooman4046 this youtube vid is from my state. NY times. I saw the protests in Israel. Any logical rational thinking Israel protested against Netanyahu. He is equivalent to the far right wing. If they are not Israel and do not follow the same religion, he thinks they have no rights.
There is a lesson to be learned here.
Not really. There are many wars that have been fought around the world with the same problems.

@@Benjamin-rv6uwNo. That's largely the cause of all this in the first place.
It's surprising a video was made but everyone kind of already knew. Kind of a waste of effort.
I agree that many already knew this was happening, but there are many people who won't believe any reports of Isreal's criminal behavior towards Palestine unless it comes from a "reliable news source," which for many people means a US news source. So many people in Gaza have continued to share firsthand accounts of this chaos, but at least in the US, where many people continue to believe the propaganda that Palestinians are all senseless terrorists and Isreal can do no wrong, it is a big deal for evidence like this to be collected and shared by such a respected news outlet. With any luck, formal reports such as this will lead to increased public pressure on the US government to condemn the assault on Gaza, rather than perpetrate it. I hope the NYT continues to report on the truth of Isreal's culpability.
hate will never win
Tell that to the "palestinians".
@@mannyman4103 Palestinians are the indigenous people of Palestine. The Ashkenazi are Eastern European invaders.
Here in the west we have told ourselves that war is basically like desert storm, precision airstrikes, few boots on ground lost, few civilians killed. In reality war an actual war is not that, it looks like what we are seeing, food people die, civilians die. Now with that said i think its clear there is much more could be done to spare civilians in Gaza, and its something Israel will have to atone for postwar whatever yhat make look like. War is ugly, nasty, bloody and ruthless
The fact that this type of unbiased, fact-based, non-dogmatic journalism/reporting is available for free on the internet literally gives me a tiny bit of hope in these dark times.
Thank you NYT, the work you are doing here is astonishing.

Oct 7 was an counter strike by Palestinian resistance which led to liberation of Palestinian hostages in prisons of the apartheid regime.
Thanks for this report. The whole situation is so heartbreaking.
What an evil world we are living.

Legitimate question: Does anyone know if the "civilians" are Hamas supporters? It seems odd to me that these "civilians" would choose to live among / within a terrorist-controlled area. Not making a statement, truly asking in case anyone knows.

Their whole ideology is hating Jewish people and they're very low on the rungs of the Islamic Cast system.
Hmmm. Where can they go? Do they have options? You make it seem they they choose to be in Gaza. Do you not know that they are stuck there? Now you are legitimately confusing me.
war is horrifying
What if Hamas went to the designated safe place as well? Any reports on how many Hamas militants had been killed? Hamas-run ministry of health made no mention of any Hamas militants getting killed, it’s always civilians.
Finally, even NYT is waking up?
Everybody who "stands with Israel" should evaluate what that really means for their personal ethics. This is just one of the many war crimes comitted these past 70 days.
