"The best advertising is a working game"
This should be obvious by now.
I took part in the development of Super Smash Flash 2 as a voluntary aninator/cleaner-uper/playtester/Q&A/translator/idea guy, it was an indie Super Smash Bros. clone made in flash (if that wasn't obvious) and at some point I was invited to be a dev but refused, though I was always considered a sort of unofficial dev as I knew a lot about the game, conducted interview with the devs, datamined the game, got told secrets quite often, and briefly had access to the dev are of their forums. One thing I always banged heads with "the other devs" was that they should polish the game instead of trying to shove content and making it harder to debug later, because they kept telling me "content is what brings attention to the game and keeps it afloat". When the lead developer finally understood that, stopped, took a break to plan what they wanted to do and both rewrote the physics engine + polished the game overall and added new techs it really slingshoted. There was an initial dip, but the fanbase was more than happy to play the improved engine because it felt so much better, as well as the polished graphics, and after some time the news spread and things snowballed, more and more people were downloading the game each patch, the scene grew, the game was taken more and more seriously, and the devs reported it was easier to keep and update the game as it was internally more polished as well (the development tools. They could externally develop characters and liad them into the game, for example, so devs could work on them without messing with the source code, and it also made the game load faster as it could load characters and maps later on).
We may check games out because they're shiny, but we stick to it if it is good to play. Agar and Minecraft are great examples of games that look shoddy but captivated people and grew over time. Heck, SSF2 as well.

I remember the early days of SSF2, heck I remember playing and 100% completing SSF1 way back then, the engine change vastly elevated the game from your average flash game to a really serviceable Smash clone. And although the game is still extremelly limited by it's engine compared to other Smash-esque fan/indie games nowdays (30 FPS cap, choppy camera), the sheer improvement and the fact that such a large project was done in Flash to begin with is nothing but impressive.
So kudos if you participated in making the game be as good as it is now.

It's almost a miracle from heaven (or from Pyre for us Paladins players) that in 2023 things have started off relatively well, introducing a new character that's interesting for the lore, and relatively balanced in the game, the fact that now Payload has returned again and today, March 29, they have finally managed to bring the remaining maps of Payload, not to mention that the event of The Rise of Furia returns. Hope is the last thing that is lost and apparently new programmers have been hired and maybe a new art director, and I understand that EM will be more independent from Hi-Rez having more creative freedom so maybe we will start having more champions originals and maps.

Just came from Overwatch2 yesterday. I've been a consistent Gm player in overwatch for a few years now and that game is going so downhill with the stale team comps, the boring dripfed content ,and the terrible rank inflation and matchmaking. I started playing this game with 5 of my friends and we genuinely are having the most fun time in a game in years. We steamrolled kids for the first day until the matchmaking put us against better players and its so much fun seeing how different builds and team comps with over 50+ champs play out on each map. I hope that more OW2 refugees will make their way over to this game and that the traction will inspire HighRes to add to their workforce and realize that this could comeback to be one of the best hero shooters on the market.

He's right abt something going wrong and people moving. I'm an ow2 player who sunk 300 hours into seasons 2,3 and 4 (which is a lot for me) but after the PvE news and the announcement they're introducing more CC me and my ow duo moved to this game after hearing it was basically an ow clone. Proud to say i love this game's VA, graphics and the gameplay, while confusing at times, is great and both the perk buy and talent system allow counterplay that doesn't shut people down completely but stops comps like 3 tank 2 heal being oppressive (like maeve having access to street justice into tank heavy lobbies) and things like illuminant or resilience help combat CC and stealth like skye. I do hope this game gets more attention, we've already experienced lots of UI bugs and I've clipped through the map a few times when going for multi-kills, but I think this game's a great alternative for people who lost hope in blizzard

I come from a lot of Smite experience, started playing Smite back in 2017 and have thousands of hours in that game. I also first played Overwatch in 2016 and loved it back in the day, it was one of the first "competitive" games that I took somewhat seriously, and playing with a full party of friends is hard to beat; I have a lot of memories from back then. But in it's modern day state it's somewhat dead to me, especially after the whole PVE debacle.
It's really sad to hear the state that Paladins is currently in, according to this video. Although I am new so I don't know for sure what the extent is. I only have like 12 hours total in Paladins over the course of it's entire existence. However, I've been playing lately and really enjoying it, the game is satisfying and has a lot of cool stuff going for it.
I love the systems of Cards and Talents, you really can customize your loadout to your liking and truly enjoy whatever playstyle suits you the most. This is one of the best things about the game, alongside the skill floor and skill ceiling, which both feel appropriate.
Also, the Item Shop system is really nice as well. I like that you can use Kill to Heal or Life Rip if you aren't receiving a lot of heals, or don't have a Healer. Likewise, you can use Rejuvenate if the opposite is true. Resilience if you are being pestered with Crowd Control. Nimble and Lethality give lots of control over your movement. Bulldozer and Wrecker if needed in certain situations.
A lot of it reminds me a lot of another game from the 2016 hero shooter era, called Gigantic, which unfortunately died in 2018 (unless you know how to get into the private server on PC.) Gigantic was a sort of hybrid between a 3rd-person shooter with some MOBA elements, and you could similarly pick & choose upgrades during a match that slightly altered how your character functioned. It was a lot of fun, that game was ahead of it's time and some of the Champions and in general the fantasy aesthetic sometimes reminds me of Gigantic.
Coming from Smite (Also DBD to some extent) I'm used to games being a buggy shithole sometimes so I'm prepared for that. But I am more worried about getting into Paladins but if the game doesn't have a stable player base, that would be pretty upsetting.

like if updates made the game unplayable i'd be upset but i would understand they want to bring the game in a different direction, but the fact that the game is still one of the most fun experiences i've ever had in gaming makes me livid, it's like they are just WASTING this much potential without even giving it a single chance

Got back into this game similar to you, after 4 years of hiatus.
I started,I think it was either September or October 2016 and shit was so much different back then,I kinda miss it.
I played a lot during 2017 before my old PC died and had to retire from the game for a while, then in 2018 and for a bit of 2019 I played on a friend's PS4 and yeah, the aiming is so strange, and speaking of aiming, the aim assist is still busted af I think.
In 2019 after I got my new PC,I played for a while till I got too frustrated with the game and left for 4 years.
Now in 2023,there are way too many champions imo so they should slow the fuck down with them and polish the game.
Tho one thing I miss dearly from the old days was the emphasis on mobility. The only character that still has that feeling of old mobility is VII which he is gonna get nerfed,I understand why but still.
And speaking of changes and/or reworks,I was an day 1 Torvald main and when they reworked him,I stopped playing him as I found him boring now. So now my only way to feel like I'm playing old Torvald is Kasumi,I know that the community dislikes her,but I don't,I find her fun to play as.
Lastly,Im still salty that they never brought back Grohk's old default skin as an option to buy as I started maining him back when he was considered a meme/throw pick.
Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

Which was my primary online gaming device. Started playing paladins on switch, not trying to flex. I legitimately had fun but was shocked by the lack of polish. The fore mentioned bugs and aiming in the video I felt hard. I was honestly saddened by the state. I thought by now these basic quality of life issues would be handled, low and behold Apex Mobile is more stable game on my pixel 3. Sorry for the back to back Ted talks.

You know a funny thing, I played this game a lot on pc, to the point I spent money on the champion pack and some skins, when I got my ps4, which is still better than my old ass pc, cross save was a thing , but when I tried to retrieve my account, it didn't let me, so I lost over 50 bucks, I can still play on my pc with my old account but it is a problem I've addressed to the technical team several times and they still have me on hold, I've been like this since koga was released , and no one is helping me retrieve my old account, and the champion pack is non existent now so I can't get the new champions without grinding my ass of

This is probably gonna be a terrible analogy but I feel like Hi-Rez is trying to run Evil Mojo like ancient civilizations made bread. They didn't have readily available yeast. So what did they do? They used the last batch of bread as a starter and kept adding to it. Sure you can keep pumping out more bread, but holy shit can you imagine how much festering is done in that.. thing? They keep adding and adding to the mess without getting some grounding to start fresh. Hi-Rez needs to let EM take the year+ or so to unravel the damn code and also migrate to UE5 or at least 4. I remember someone doing a demo of Paladins in just UE4 showing like 5s clips in the shooting range and it looked insane. Like actual 2022 triple A title shit. An engine update and getting the code into a state where bug fixing doesn't take 6 months for minor issues would be the saving grace for Paladins.

I wish they just make a new Paladins from scratch. Essentially recreate the game in a new engine. Bring over all current champs, skins, maps and modes. It would have an initial patch of labor. But then maintenance and updates would be much easier. No more spaghetti code, legscy bugs etc.
And most of your dead zone controller issues seem to be a common issue on Xbox. Resident Evil 4 had this issue, Redfall, and many others. PS4/5 seems fine.

I stopped playing somewhere around... mid 2020? and hey I am back now that i got a low end gaming pc and I still love it, just wish more people get to see the fun of the game and the devs would fix... 70% of the problems? I bet you, just that alone would get people to come back.
And would get me spending some of my hard worked bonuses for them, the skins of this game OMG.

For as long as I can remember the game has always felt good when aiming on my playstation controller, of course there are cases where I'm not completely happy with the sensitivity, but they are very rare cases, I would say 95% of the characters feel good.

Despite the bugs, glitches, and occasional crashes, let me tell you a story that'll make you chuckle 😄 It was a few years ago when Ascension Peak was released, right in the midst of Fortnite's reign 👑🎮 I had just finished my exams, and my dad reloaded my Steam account like a superhero 💪 Without wasting any time, I eagerly launched Paladins and splurged on the entire event like a giddy kid in a candy store 🍬🎉 While Fortnite was the talk of the town, my loyalty remained with Paladins because it had captured my heart ❤️ And trust me, it still does, despite its occasional quirks!
I have countless memories of me, in all my dorkiness, imitating Paladins characters in real life 🤪 Whether I was unleashing my ultimate like Jenos and dramatically proclaiming, "Step into the light and perish," or pretending to be Androxus, holding my imaginary gun and dramatically declaring, "Death awaits you all," I couldn't resist being a goofball and embodying these awesome characters! And let's not forget the VGS system-Paladins' secret language for strategic communication with teammates 🗣️🤝 It's a gem that deserves all the appreciation!
But hey, despite its flaws, Paladins has a special place in my heart 💖 It makes me a little sad to see its gradual decline, especially considering the substantial financial investment I've made in the game. But you know what? Love knows no bounds, and my love for Paladins remains unwavering! 💖 Even though I haven't played Smite myself, I often wonder what makes it stand out. But Paladins, oh boy, it's a game that brings back nostalgic memories, especially from my teenage years-those awkward times of figuring out love and life, with Paladins by my side!
Here's a fun tidbit for you: I've had three girlfriends so far, but my love for Paladins has survived all those relationships! 😅 The only breakup that would happen is if someone disrespected me-I have zero tolerance for that! But when it comes to Paladins, it's just Paladins, and I absolutely adore it! ❤️
Dude, your passion for Paladins is awesome! 🙌 It's heartwarming to know that others share the same love for this game. In fact, I'm seriously considering making videos about Paladins too, because I refuse to let this amazing game fade away. As Lex-o Suit would say, "Couldn't have done it better myself, sorry, that's a lot!" Let's keep the flame of love for Paladins burning bright! 🔥✨
And let's not forget that despite the occasional bugs and glitches, Paladins is undeniably worth saving! As an avid player who has spent over $2,000 on cosmetics and DLCs (I know, my wallet cries too 😅💸), I can confidently say that Paladins has provided me with countless hours of enjoyment and unforgettable experiences!
One event that really stands out in my memory is Ascension Peak 🌄🏞️ The immersive storytelling, unique challenges, and captivating lore made it one of my all-time favorites! It showcased the developers' creativity and attention to detail, leaving a lasting impression on me and countless other players. 🎭📚
Despite the occasional technical hiccups, the developers of Paladins have consistently shown their commitment to improving the game! Regular updates and patches address known issues and introduce new features, proving their dedication to delivering a polished and enjoyable experience. 🛠️🎮
Their responsiveness to player feedback further reinforces their commitment to the community and their desire to create the best possible gaming experience! 🙏🌟
And let's not forget about the diverse roster of champions in Paladins! Each one with their own unique playstyles and abilities, adding depth and variety to the gameplay 🎭🔥 Whether I'm in the mood for agile flankers, sturdy tanks, or versatile supports, there's always a champion that suits my preferred playstyle. The continuous addition of new champions ensures that the game remains fresh and exciting, providing me with plenty of options to explore and master! 🏹🛡️💥
So, my friend, despite the occasional bugs and glitches, Paladins has captured my heart and kept me invested for years. From the countless hours of gameplay to the significant investment in cosmetics and DLCs, my dedication to the game speaks volumes! 🎮💙 With its engaging events like Ascension Peak, the developers' commitment to improvement, and the vibrant community, Paladins is undoubtedly a game worth saving and supporting! Let's keep the love for Paladins alive and thriving! 💪❤️🔥🎉

Shammy's ancient video on this game still holds very true to current day. Damage output is ridiculous, the time to kill is very low and it'd basically be non-existent if mobility wasn't a thing. I genuinely think HiRez has the best team-based shooter on the market, they just don't do anything good with it. I remember back in the beta when tanks and supports had a higher health pool and team fights felt like there was more of an emphasis on positioning and strategy. Damage characters weren't ridiculously busted because grenade spam / spammy kits weren't as prevalent. Basically, the damage class is objectively the best and tank is completely worthless. 4000 health will disappear almost instantly if the enemy team's damage champs aren't lobotomites. "Ape push button, me kill man. Me make big damage, me throw fire bomb". Just about every balance related issue with this game would disappear if they brought supports and flanks back to how they were in the beta or if they just straight up deleted the damage class. It's wild. I'd say the main thing keeping me coming back to this game is the ridiculous amount of depth and nuance in character kits. Specifically the support class and maybe tank. Too bad tank is the most optional class in the entire game. Holding the point doesn't mean anything if you get melted instantly, or if you could just pick damage and wipe the enemy team, then cap the point. TLDR: Damage is busted, delete em and the game would probably be 10x better. In a game with so much depth, a class with zero depth is a huge blemish on what could be the best hero shooter out there rn.

10k+ hours on the game(half on the original launcher), mostly ranked, but I can say there is only 2 major complaints I have with the game. The matchmaking system(no, not the way it figures out who to pair you with) is so incredibly buggy and broken. Once you are in game Paladins is actually pretty dang polished, but everything else, the UI, the draft, the friend/party system, the chat system is all so fkn buggy now more than I ever remember it being in 6 years.
That being said, if you can get past that the actual game itself is PHENOMINAL, very very few bugs and the gameplay is just leagues and bounds better than OW. It's clear the game has just given itself such a bad reputation and now with all these out of game bugs, it just puts people off of even wanting to play it, which is absolutely bonkers, the potential is... just wow, TF2 was a great analogy.
My other major complaint is the character/skin/lore direction. May sound petty but personally I think one thing that really made this game special, the cherry on the gameplay sundae, was that it had such unique characters with outstanding voicelines. A tree with an axe(well i guess that one isn't 100% unique, but still great), a hot spanish buff dude with a flamethrower and a huge ego, the little demon old world Asian monkey, the outer space cosmic man of mystery, ninjas, a big fkn turtle with an anchor and a shell shield... like man I could keep going but the character design was fabulous and the voice lines for them were just so fkn sweet.
Now? Lol now 85-90% of new champions and skins are some weird edgy abyss demon horns(on fkn everything), demon this, dark that, edgy edgy edgy. Some of that stuff was cool, i mean Raum is your stereotypical big demon dude and Seris a traditional oracle, but all the anime looking characters as well(I like anime, but I see what's going on here). But it's gone well beyond that and shows no signs of wanting to do anything but that.
Surely it's what sells, who our community is mostly comprised of, but I can guarantee you guys the game will die like that. It's a super small niche and this is the kind of game that will only strive with lots of players feeding the matchmaking algorithm, the gameplay needs to be spot on(it is), it needs to be unique to set itself apart from OW(it is), and it has to have a nice diverse range of characters for all the kinds of people who are going to be playing it(it does, but that portion of the game is getting smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller with the homogenization of champions to dark edgy anime characters).

Smite has been my favorite game since I was introduced back in 2020 and Paladins has been my go to fps since the whole OW2 situation. They definitely share some similar issues bug-wise (both are live service games running on UNREAL ENGINE 3), game crashing regularly, HUDs and in-game menus breaking, etc. Paladins however has so many present technical issues within the gameplay itself that, as you've addressed, they simply don't have the numbers nor correct development goals to fix. I would love to see both games move to a newer engine and/or be rewritten from the ground up but the task is so heavy for either game and neither has the lack of success I suppose to warrant the resources for it. Also the monetization for both games is pretty upsetting, Gem and Crystal conversion to US dollars are abysmal (In no game should you have to spend $25 dollars for a single skin for a single character out of the hundreds of skins available). Those are some vague gripes I have with both games. Me and my friends however have started playing Paladins more as of late and it's way more fun than I remember it, even with the day 1 issues. Anyways your video was great, I and many others can appreciate a positive stance on a game surrounded with nothing but disgust and disappointment. Hopefully we can see a shift someday in not only the management of Paladins but also the gaming industry as a whole.

I didn’t really feel motivated to play the new champions because they came out so fast. Anyways ever since ow2 became free I just made the switch, the game polish and the transparency of the develops makes a huge difference. Gonna miss paladins though, it had great potential but was just really poorly executed.
