I heard this and even though I like Naomi's tone, that breathing really got to me and interfered with my ability to like this version.
Granted, I'm very picky when it comes to Christmas songs...and I have a wide range of tastes from John Gary to Kelly Clarkson to Pentatonix, and beyond.

I think voice teaching/reaction videos and any area of commentary youtube generally would be a much more fulfilling place if more people were honest in the way that you are. Thank you for doing so, as far as I can tell, and thank you for saying so. I imagine that's not an easy part of your job.
There are some similar channels I like that seem to slip into performance themselves too often, positive or negative.
I'm only one person but I very much appreciate that you make part of your job being honest about what you think even when it might not be the easiest position to take, and that's a large part of why I'm glad you do this as a job for people as well as your other work commitments.

I love you Sam, but when you’re in this kind of room where it’s not about a performance so much as it’s a moment of worship and focusing on God, nobody is trying too hard to breathe through phrases. It’s about the spirit of the song and the message it carries. Naomi is a powerhouse, no matter where she breathes. 😉 Sometimes looking at it too technically can take away its natural beauty. But I still love you!

I appreciate that you acknowledge that not everything is for you. I still like hearing your critical analysis of the vocal technique. I will note though, the swaying probably isn't mostly performative. It's just I think most people's instinct to move their body that way during worship, although some people might be doing that because they think that's what they're supposed to do.
I personally am a little picky about worship and praise music. This version of Emmanuel wouldn't be my favorite. I prefer versions of this song that have more consistent timing and I feel like they play around with the meter a little too much on this one. But that's just my preference.

I didn’t like this version very much either, although their voices are great, and I didn’t know why. Maybe it’s the breathing that was putting me off too. I also thought it was a little too slow, which may be why they felt the need to take so many breaths

Agree that the breathing spots weren’t optimal; felt more of a performative choice than a practical one. I love the song too but the breathing choices made it feel more disconnected to me. I prefer Selah’s version to this one, wonder if you’ve heard it?

With the pronunciation, O Come Emmanuel is just weird like that. There are canon weird pronunciations that you have to do to sing it correctly

Depending on when this was filmed, it's possible that he just has mask beard? When you wear a mask for so long that it gets pushed back in a weird way.

Love that you clarified that we shouldn't be commenting on people's bodies because we don't want to shame them, well also acknowledging the fact that people's appearances really are distracting whether we want them to be or not. Many times I struggle to watch people sing even though I love listening to them saying because of the way they shape their mouth, a specific way that maybe their head moves, or any number of other visual distractions, and it affects my bias of how they are singing.
I think a big reason a lot of people pronounce it (rejoice) so aggressively is because, like you said, it comes from hymnal so it is old english. The proper pronunciation of the Old English word would be with a hard e sound. Also, it has been pronounced that way forever and people don't like change.

Church nerd here: my experience of singing O Come O Come is that the English translation is wickedly hard compared to the Latin. The chant tune was designed for Latin and a lot of the phrasing in English (to retain the rich theology of the text) is just so awkward sometimes. The breath points are adding to the awkwardness, though my *hunch* for the why is that they seem to be adding breath to certain parts specifically to highlight those phrases. I think it's a cheap trick that pulls one out of the song rather than drawing one in. I think that's why the song actually improves (IMO) when they move from the traditional chant into a modern reinterpretation.

I kinda disagree with the breathing. For me, unexpected breathing has a positive emotional impact. Because, when you are emotional, you can be short on breath and have unexpected gaps. It did not distract me. However, I really like critical Sam. It is better to mention something people might not agree on, so it can be discussed an optimized, instead of just ignoring it. This is how progress is made. Great reaction! To me, you were not negatively butchering the peformance, you gave your honest opinion, depending on your mood that day. This makes it authentic, which I miss from a variety of reaction youtubers out there.

As a non-native speaker with a mother tongue that does not have tonic accentuation on words, I find the discussion on the importance of putting the accent in the right place fascinating.
I have been "living" in english for almost 25 years, and now I know the music of most common words, but it is still an active work for me to think where the accuentuation should be.
When I ask native speakers to repeat a word I did not catch, they often enhance the tonic accent while what I am actually asking is to clearly pronounce the syllables (that's what is important in my native language).
Funnily some songs help me remember how to pronounce some words (without Cher I wouldn't remember how to say be*lie*ve).
I always appreciate your analysis and commentary and I really appreciate that you’re able to communicate the things that they’re doing really well, the things that could better and your general feelings about any particular song. I think that the breadth of genres you’ve reacted to shows that you’re able to appreciate all music.
I’m totally the target audience for this song and it’s one of my favourite Christmas carols but I didn’t connect with this version at all and also found the breathing super distracting!

Sam, commenting for the 2nd time under your videos. Although I like a few other vocal reactors (sometimes analysts) as well, I feel like I'm approaching your new videos with the most curiosity and enthusiasm. I guess you win me over with your irony, but still kindness, also the fact of you having a sense of humor about yourself (which always - hopefully still - gets bonus points worldwide). I love the reflexive vibe of your input. Here I felt it was really "meta-meta-meta-thing" (and watching the last few videos, I was wondering once or twice if "being meta" and ironic didn't go too far, but I'm still firmly in my seat, not sure about others...) , but it leads you to unexpected territories - it can be epistemology, philosophy of perception, here it is more related to ethics and probably pedagogy (how to criticise responsibly, not being "too judgemental", etc.) And the choice of analyzed videos - I mean who else chooses Alexander Rybak from Eurovision contest and Flavor Flav for vocal analysis in succession (the lone fact of the latter choice I'm digesting so much and for so long that I haven't clicked the video yet.) Actually not for the first time I had this peculiar idea to go through your videos on the channel from the beginning to now (I watched probably less than 50%), but no worries - for now I'm only at the stage of the idea.
