Thank you so much! I talked myself out of finishing it or posting it several times. I forced myself to stick with it, and I'm glad I did. An imperfect video, but a fun one that had several lessons for me while I made it. Thanks for the happy comment.
Since posting this video, I sold my F6 and bought the F3 and F2. I already forgot that the wrong audio recorder wasn't why I wasn't making videos.... ha!
@@ShaunHautly This video lacked sound quality. Sometimes you had to listen hard to understand what you were saying. I wanted to write to you about this problem, but as I understand it, this video was filmed only with a phone and a tripod? A lavalier microphone and zoom F2 would solve this problem. There are many radio microphones on the market now for the phone. Have you considered any radio microphones for your phone?
You're right, I was committed to filming using only my phone. I have an F2 and a lav, I have on camera mics, I have too much audio gear. I just chose to make the audio bad for this one. :-P
Shaun what you see as a imperfect video you want to change views to me as a kick ass video which needs no changes. But as a fellow creator I completely understand what you mean. I love this video. It’s super subtle and the product placements don’t read as an ad but as just ‘Here is my day’. I guess this is where the Casey N comparison comes from. Casey makes cool stuff and there is nothing new under the sun, right? I would love to make videos as cool and successful as Casey’s. Tbh I would love to have my production and videos as cool as this one. Good stuff man.
Yeah. I always struggle to articulate what I mean when I refer to "bad videos." I know that all of it is part of the process, but sometimes I feel like there isn't a better word. I like Casey's style, but it's his storytelling that I truly envy.
Yes. So much yes. I reduced the amount of gear I use down to a lens, a camera and sometimes not even a light. (If there is light somewhere) and everything seems to get easier from there. I need to buy a hardhat though.
Haha. Hardhats are a must. I used to pour over what gear to bring on a vacation. The past few, I've only brought my phone and a little tripod, and I end up filming so much more than if I had to get out gear for every shot.
Plug a good mic like a Rode Video NTG or Deity V-Mic D3 directly into the camera. Or instead of buying an on-camera mic, get a decent mic and a good recorder. Alternatively, you can always use an iPhone on a boom arm and it gets surprisingly good sound. I made a little demo here: ruclips.net/video/PvRr8Ziu1vY/видео.html
Great video, I like your honesty. I have been in a very similar spot lately. Do you think that storing all the gear in a different place might also help? So that all the gear is not always in sight and surrounding one, and can just be picked up when needed for a project. (Like a separate storage room, separated from the actual workplace...). If its even possible to find the extra space
Probably. However, my "gear room" is a corner of my basement, and it's only really used for that. I don't edit down there. It's just knowing I have a slider makes me think I shouldn't make a video without a slider shot. But that takes so much time that I just don't make the video. I forced myself to only use my phone and tripod on this one, and it came out alright. I'm starting to sell more of my gear to stop getting in the way of my process...
Hey Shaun, it's been a solid minute xD I totally get you, I have so many "great" ideas for videos that I get way too much into my head and end up thinking about how to make it the best video ever, everything I have to include, how to shoot it, and I am never happy with my vision so I end up not making any videos at all.... for like two years..... while my entire life changes and I change and I get more ideas for new things to talk about but it.... just..... never..... is...... the...... right...... moment xD
I get that, 100%. I always feel like I need to "save my good ideas," but that only ends up meaning that I'll never make them. Now I'm trying to tell myself that I should make them, and if I want to remake them one day with more polish, that's an option. But to not make the idea at all is discouraging. We'll all get better!
Amazing perspective as well Shaun! Thanks for creating and sharing and inspiring.
Of course! We've got to do another Florida trip someday with minimal gear and see what we create. Phone and Drone.
Yooooo this was so good. The meta-ness of it too! And it was deep. You're creativity showed on this one bro😎

If you only have a camera and a lens, how do you record high-quality sound?
