This man is very smart. I have been involved in agriculture all my life…this answers so many of my questions. I have always wondered how they keep from cross pollination. Very interesting. Thanks Carlos and Doug.

I was just in Tequila a couple months ago and took the tour. In talking with Rene at Atanasio I mentioned the same points about disease and clones, living in the Napa Valley my whole life all these topics come up also and was not surprised at similarities between the two. This was a great video.

This is why Ocho is so delicious. Arguably the best tequila at their price point and certaintly way better than some of the mass marketed brands!

Seems like the CRT should create an extension program to reach out to the community and especially the major agave producers to offset the agave production cycle. Cut back planting when the price is high and everybody else is planting, so you have more capacity to plant when the price is low and nobody else is planting. Get a couple seasons of corn or bean production in while waiting for the right time to produce agave again. Eventually with education and planning they can create a more stable market dynamic. Maybe go with Mezcal so you can plant other agaves that might not be vulnerable to exactly the same pests and diseases.
Obviously I'm not the first to think of this, it just seems odd the major producers can't plan ahead far enough to improve their own businesses' stability.

Yeah very weird that they don’t seem to learn much from each cycle.
