  • This botany experiment allows you to collect and visualize the water lost by leaves during transpiration. Try this simple science experiment at home and let me know how it goes!

▶️ How to do the leaf transpiration experiment:
Step 1: Find a tree that has low-hanging branches and leaves. I chose the maple tree in my front yard.
Step 2: Place a freezer bag over 4-5 leaves still attached to the branch.
Step 3: Seal the bag as much as you can. Use duct tap to seal where the twig goes into the bag.
    Step 4: Wait!
Step 5: In 2-3 days, observe the results.
▶️ How the leaf transpiration experiment works:
After a couple of days with the bag covering leaves, you'll notice there are drops of condensation around the leaves on the inside of the bag, and a pool of water at the bottom of the bag.
In trees, water is taken up by the roots of the plant and transported to the leaves, where it leaves the plant as water vapor. We're collecting that water vapor in this experiment and allowing it to condense back into a liquid inside the sealed bag.
You can also visualize water being transported to the leaves by placing leaf stems in a test of red food coloring. Watch as the leaf changes colors.

What if there's no leaves only the branch being cover? Does it's still produce water?

Any dust or contamination on the leaf would likley end up in the water so I wouldn't.

bc i feel like as long as the area was relatively clean and the plant wasnt poisonous you could drink that.

      yes
while water from rain may be contaminated due to air pollution, water vapor a tree emits is produced by the tree itself, so unless the soil is also polluted, the water is very much safe to drink
