  • On the evening of Sunday, December 10, 2023, around 20 properties were evacuated, gardens collapsed, and the Smuggler's Haven Tea Gardens was left 'hanging on' following a large landslip.
The upper section of Leeson Road has remained closed since the catastrophic landslip when 16 hectares - some 14million cubic metres of land - was displaced in what was one of the largest landslides recorded on the South Coast of England.
Most of the residents have since moved back home, but Ventnor's Leeson Road has remains closed.

A rotating slip! Steer very well clear of the whole St. Katherines point area.
All of the IoW coast from St. Katherines to about the Needles is eroding rapidly.

This is on the Eastern side of Ventnor, miles away from St Catherine's Point, which is spelt with a "C". I live on the Military Rd between Blackgang and Brook and some of the cliff is eroding quickly, some is quite stable, depending on the mix and amount of different types of sandstone and clay present, surface water run-off and wave action. The chalk cliffs between Compton and the Needles also vary considerably in their resistance to erosion depending on their mineral constituents and exposure to the prevailing wave direction.
