I feel like you might want to try rewatching this with a more open mind. The black and white aspect of this film has both a literal meaning as well as artistic. Films are made in black and white to this day. Doesn’t judging an entire genre of music because of a minority of people who listen to it seem painfully ironic to you? Doubting that Derrick was an honor student based on his life choices is a dangerous assumption to make. Misdirected anger and intelligence are a terrifying combination, they make the best leaders… history has shown us that.

What somewhat gets ignored in the movie is how racist the gangs are also. All sides were very racist. Ed Norton's character learned not to be a racist AND not to be a gang thug. It is at the end that other racists kill his brother. that is what makes this movie more interesting and not just another white people are racist movies.

By rejoining the skinheads, he stands a better chance of surviving.
Derek was already being targeted by one group of people, and after dissing the skinheads, he now has two separate groups after him and eventually is going to be killed by someone. After Danny's death, in reality if he had any brains he would realize that he needs the skinheads to protect him so he needs to make peace with them.

It's a emotion filled movie about the evil of racism. But let me throw a twist into the plot of the movie. Hollywood likes to throw in an agenda into their movies years ahead Of the time. For someone that is paying attention to whats happening you can find some points in the movie that they are hiding in emotional charger racist scenes of the movie. Almost as if you are thinking a certain way about the issues brought up, you are an evil racist. Let me explain the hidden reversed psychology in this movie. Issue of illegal immigration, it was punishment by the skinheads, the scene in the supermarket. Makes it seen as if you are against illegal immigration you are like the evil skinheads. Scene from the apartment where the fat skinheads tells the sister that she is a democrat as an insult, meaning the opposite is republican. But if you know your history democrats are one who started 3xk, ( for the Algo ). Also the scene with the father talking about affirmative action, where he has firefighters that scored lower than two other people but were hired instead to fullfil race quota. Nowadays it's happening more and I don't know how you would think, but if I had to have a surgery or was on a plane flying I would want to be under supervision of the best person no matter what race they are. But in the movie they twist that it's a racist way to think. I'm sure there is many more examples in this movie. In conclusion on one hand it's a good movie that makes you emotional about the evils of racism but on the other hand there is some hidden woke agenda that not everyone will be able to see. It seems that Hollywood is a propaganda machine for the elites, planting seeds in our minds by emotional sabotaging our thoughts. In the case of this movie and the 3 examples I gave one would think that if you are against illegal immigration, if you are a republican or you want the best man for the job ( not taking color into the equation) you are just as evil as the main character in the beginning of the movie.

This is a great movie. Have you seen a movie called homeless to harvard? I think that'd be a really good movie to react to.

I believe if Derrick stayed in that neighborhood, he would have probably be dead within the month.

In the original ending, Derek realizes that after Danny is killed, the only real way he can continue is by joining his old skinhead crew. But Norton insisted on getting rid of that part, which like you say, is problematic because it doesn't address how Derek will handle dealing with his old crew and the people trying to avenge the curb stomp.

    * The curb stomp was brutal! 🤮
    * I told my kids when they were young that people are like dogs. They all come in different shapes, sizes and colors. And they can choose to mate with every different one.

The original ending had Derek go home after his little brother is murdered and shave his head and return to his old ways. Edward Norton refused, and got them to change the ending to what it is. He wanted to show that the chain of violence could stop, but it's up to each of us.
