Epson do make Great projectors. I am a fan of 3 LCD that Epson use, much better than those (Rainbow effect) DLP projectors. I tried out an Epson TW6700 projector it is a native 1080p but the picture was so Good, I kept saying to myself who needs 4K when looking at the screen in front of me
I have the TW6700 and it is excellent. However after seeing this video about the 4k enhancement that is in the TW7100 I am VERY tempted to swap this Christmas.
@@Youthman thank you. i wish someone had some videos of a comparison of the two black levels for comparison. then again, the jvc is in a very different price range lol. i have a small room so things are a bit difficult :(
aoFeliX it’s actually difficult to do side by side comparisons unless both projectors have been properly calibrated. I do not know how to calibrate myself and to spend close to $500 to calibrate two projectors for a video comparison just isn’t practical.
Nice compare and contrast comparison. You've made the point several times you are comparing, not reviewing an older well used Panasonic projector to a new un-calibrated Epson. There is enough content there that if someone were interested they could follow up with more research. I thought they both looked pretty good with the Epson having the better picture.
Hey Youthman! Great video. Thanks to your video, I decided to buy an Epson 4010, a stepdown model. I just have a question: how did you manage to compensate for the dim picture in the digital Cinema mode (P3 WCG)? With the out of the box settings the picture is already clipping the whites, but in movies like Ford v Ferrari the general picture is already dim, so adjusting the contrast is not a great solution.
The difference is clear Epson for the win. I’m still looking into the pixel shift technology and trying to decide if I should be happy with what I have for now and wait for native 4K projectors to become more affordable or if I should upgrade now.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I ended up selling my Panasonic AE8000u and upgrading to the Epson 5040UB as I'm not sure how many years it will take before Native 4K is going to be below $2500. I figure I could enjoy the Epson for a few years and then when the Native 4K becomes more affordable, I'll sell the Epson and upgrade at that time. So far I love what I'm seeing with the 5040UB. It's definitely an upgrade over my Panasonic.
Youthman I’ve been looking on AVS trying to understand pixel shift and from my understanding it just upscale a 1080 pic. So does the projector down scale a 4K signal to 1080 just to split the the pixels? If so is there any difference in PQ of a BluRay vs 4K on a pixel shift projector? I’d be interested to see a comparison of the two formats on one of these projectors.
I'm still new to the 4K scene myself and am trying to learn as much as I can. I believe you are correct in that a 4K input to the Epson is down sampled to a 1080p image, then the Epson applies Pixel Shifting to upscale the image to 4Ke. I just installed the Epson so I have not had a chance to do any comparison between 4K and Bluray disks on it. I noticed last night while watching a 4K disk that the image seemed dark. In one of my previous videos I mentioned that playing a 4K disk on the Panasonic was darker than playing a bluray disk so I'm thinking it will be the same with the Epson. I'm wondering if I would be better off just watching Bluray Disks and let it upscale just to have the brighter image.
I personally would go with the Klipsch. The PSW505 is a discontinued model. Klipsch has larger amp, both have similar frequency response. Klipsch definitely looks cooler too.
I have the Epson UK model 5350 1080p very happy with it. Yes the 4k Epsom is better but its a question is it worth the extra money. My Epson is 2 years old . Correct me if I am wrong but I think you have lens automatic shift feature for the aspect ratio when set up. Great feature to have . No Black Bars. Great video thank you.
Hi Youthman, thanks for the great reviews, very informative. Do you think it’s worth upgrading from the Epson HC3700, to the HC3800 or the 4010? The 3800 is newer than 4010, and has 10bit/4k/60 so I’m thinking it might be better for steaming 4k movies instead of down sampling 4k to 1080p. I heard that 4k and hdr look a little dark, so not sure if it’s worth the upgrade. Please let me know what you think for best performance/ price (under $2k). Thank you and best wishes.
I have the Panasonic PT-AE7000u so it makes sense I am upgrading to the Epson 4040 instead of the 5040/6040. LOL. I was gonna get a 5040 but then I was able to get a 4040 for $1400.00 NEW so I gave up a little brightness and contrast to save $700.00 over the cheapest price I could find a new 5040 at. If I did not need the lens/shift memory features I would go for the UHD65. If you are not going to use the lens/shift memory features of these projectors get an optoma UHD65. it is the best projector for the money.
@@Youthman thanks for the reply i just picked one up for 1300 shipped refurbished i hope it is good i have watched a lot of comparisons and i think this one was the best thank you.
Thank you for these comparisons. I am currently running that Panasonic and considering if I should upgrade to faux 4k projector. Epson TW9400 in particular, that is equivalent to ub6050 in US. I have just replaced new lamp on my Panasonic and picture is bright again. And I do have Panasonic UB820 UHD player that has HDR optimizer so I get correct tone mapping and bright image even from 4k UHD HDR disks. And furthermore the UB820 can do HDR to SDR while keeping BT.2020 colors in the signal. And as AE8000 does support up to DCI-P3 color gamut I can already get wider color gamut. I am just running my new lamp to 100 hours before I try to calibrate colors on it. Also I am just in the process of installing atmos speakers. So the only things I am missing from my home theater experience are still the 4K resolution and HDR.
Thanks Hogre. TV’s are great but I wanted to have a visually immersive experience in my home theater. Even an 80” TV won’t do that in my theater room. But a 150” projection screen will. 😀
I see a hugee difference. Epson Rocks. No comparison. Awesome video my friend and please keep up the outstanding work. I enjoy and learn from each and every video you post. God bless
Thank you. I really wish I had a new bulb for the Panny as I know it's not a true "fair" comparison as my Panny has 2000hrs on the bulb and the Epson is a new bulb but it's what I have to work with.
I fast forwarded through a lot of the video. I have a 4 year old AE8000 and love it. The picture is amazing and sharp. How many hours are on your bulbs? I wonder if your bulb is 8 years old as well. Your 8000 looks like the colors and focus may be off. Mine doesn't look anything like that.
Mine looked great for several years. The bulb was at the end of its lifespan which was stated in previous video. Likely had a lot to do with its poor performance but didn’t make sense for me to spend $350 on a new bulb if I was considering upgrading
Hi well done on the comparison, I a Panasonic 8000 3 years ago and sold it and went to a 75” 4K tv was a great projector. I dought the new Epson TH TW 9400 today it will be interesting to see how it goes
Hi Youthman!! Enjoyed your video. I think a new bulb would have been a better comparison. However that being said, only you can justify whether or not to upgrade. Projectors are expensive and as you know the bulbs can be expensive to replace. I used to have an Epson and used it for movies and tv viewing until I got fed up with bulb replacement.I bought mine off EBay . Also, after only 4 years he lens mechanism failed and because it was past the warranty, the cost of fixing was almost the cost of my Proscan 4 k 65 inch TV. I know you like the true movie experience . So do I, but my suggestion is think very seriously of the “COST”. Oh buy the way, I don’t know if you remember our conversation about the receivers you were reviewing, but I went to my local electronic store and did a sound demo of 3 receivers. The Yamaha RXA-2070, Denon AVR 4400 , and the NAD T758 v3. I chose the NAD because of the following: 1. Price. The regular price was $1700 and got sale for $1295. Pricing is in Canadian currency. 2. The NAD is modular. Any hardware upgrades can be replaced by replacing the obsolete module and placing the new one in. 3. NAD are honest when it comes to channel ratings. Actually they under rate there wattage. 4. I saved the best for last. The sound quality. I did 2 channel and multi channel.testing. For me, the NAD won hands down!!!!!! Unfortunately they didn’t have one in stock ,so I placed an order and hopefully will be in soon!!!!!
Having compared the UHD65 (DLP 1528p x2) to the 5040ub (1080p x2) on a 125" screen (3 meters away) in actual 4K content (not upscale) there is a very noticeable difference to the eye. It's been 7 years since Sony debuted its true 4K PJs and Epson & 3LCD are still stuck pixel shifting 1080p PJs. I'm wondering how Epson managed to call the new 4050ub a 4K/UHD projector. It's native 1080p and pixel shifted 1440p at best (4mil pixels on screen).
It’s all marketing. In my conversation with them, they don’t seem to have any desire to produce a native 4K projector. Will have to see how that plays out for them
This is comparing 1080p to half 4K (or 1528p pixel shifter). It is quite amazing how Epson has gotten away with calling a 2K pixel shifter (true HALF 4K). Epson (3LCD) is the only projection technology that has given up on 4K (pixel shifted or native).
First thing first Youthman, you've got to buy a Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark and Calibration Disc 2nd Edition , than calibrate the two projectors, after that you could compared , because right now we can't tell what's the better one. After the calibration (take your time) you would think you've got a new Panasonic.P.S. excuse my poor english
It's obvious that PRO-UHD makes a noticeable difference in image quality. With that being said, comparing the same images from both projectors side by side instead of splitting frames in half between projectors, would have made this even easier to see. This was an informative and useful video nonetheless.
Panasonic has more blue than a white. Also is darker. Epson has a truer white level. And is brighter. Dont realy see a difference in quality. Don't think it's to much better. I would try the Ben q 4k projector or view sonic 4k projector. They have better ratings for a budget 4k projector.
Thanks Bill. I want to calibrate both projectors next just to see if it makes a difference. Also wish I had a new bulb for the Panny but it is what it is
There is only one small problem, most movies are rendered in 2k, and are upscaled to 4k, so fake 4k even thou they are marketed as such. Have to show us a comparison with either demo clips are are actually 4k rendered or movies that are actually 4k rendered!
That is true, I first watched some 4K movies on my friends Qled 4k TV in HDR and I could kinda see the difference. IT was clear any benefit was from the HDR since when he could not get it to work at first I saw no difference in movies. Gaming is another story. He played God of War in 4k60 HDR and it looked great but again I am still fine with 1080p gaming for now (in 2020 Real 4K consoles will arrive) so I switched to just an xbox one S for the 4K Movies on UHD Bu-Ray. I am getting a 4040 and like the 5040 it will not accept 12gig or 18gig signals. 10gig is the most, so no HDR 4:4:4 at 60fps. In fact HDR 60FPS games from xbox one x do not work at all in HDR on the Epson's unless you spend another $190 for an HD fury to make it pass 8 bit HDR. The reason most movies are finished in 2K is the cost and time for CGI which most movies you would care about being in 4K are have. They do have a few movies that were shot and finished in 4k or higher but they are non FX movies that in most cases you will not care if they are in 4K or not. This will change but by then 4K and probably even 8K equipment will be real cheap.
I think you should possibly next time you do something like this just the 3d RUclips videos that show them split side by side. So that you can see a equal image being produced. Would be much better honestly. 2018 Epson FTW of course but still future thought would be used better image's or movie scenes
I'd have used a much slower paced movie for this test. Ready Player One is way too fast paced. Can't tell the difference enough because of the insanely fast scenes going by. Also, did you keep the Epson 5040ub?
Thanks Mahmood. That Home Theater Dude just reviewed and compared the Epson 5040UB to the Optoma UHD65 and said he preferred the Epson over the Optoma. Just curious what your take on it is. What makes the Optoma UHD60 better? Have you had the opportunity to compare them directly side by side? Have a blessed day.
The Epson has some serious red push and the colors are way off in comparison to the Panasonic. The Epson needs some greyscale calibration followed by contrast then brightness next the primary colors followed by secondaries if available then do gamma..go back then and tweak from the beginning the setting as these then fluctuate a bit..on the video the Panasonic is the better of the two just on its color accuracy
At some scenes your pana looks more natural then the 4k,but would give a heads up...don't do anything until you try a dlp...i have a dlp tv 60 inch in my hometheater with klipsch just like you do..its a 2008 model and the clarity is still amazine today, thats why when i go to the imax in orlando, international drive, that screen is a dlp projector. Have a good day my friend..
There are varied opinions on which is better (DLP vs LCD). I'm no expert and personally have only owned Panasonic Projectors but now that they are no longer making home theater projectors, it's time to look at another brand. That Home Theater Dude did some comparison between the Optoma UHD65 vs the Epson 5040UB and it seems he preferred the Epson over the Optoma. It's only one opinion though. If you have a 60" TV in your theater room, you should consider going with a projection. There's just no way to get that fully immersive picture with a TV. My previous screen was a 103" and it never felt completely immersive. Now that I've upgraded to a 150"....it is perfect!
I think it should have been better if you compared 2 epsons , one is 1080p and the other 4k because both are using 3 lcd. So if your panasonic is a DLP projector then you will get the comparisons.
Of course there are many scenarios that would have been better. Two Epsons. Two new bulbs...unfortunately I didn’t have that luxury so I used what I had for the comparison.
Why didn't you cover the same side of each Projector for an exact comparison of each scene? After all, you're Epson is free standing, you could have positioned it anywhere you liked? It's not a fair comparison to take 2 different scenes and compare them as the lighting for each scene will be very different. It's also not a good comparison to compare two different halves of the same scene as each half will be slightly different in terms of lighting. Good video, but not as good as it could have been had you covered the same sides.
Youthman, I'd say save up the money and get the Epson 6040 Pro it's total HDR 4K...But it's 5399.99 and that here in Canada, it maybe cheaper there in the States.. I think that if u don't go to true 4K you'll be kicking your self.you'll never be happy till you have the total 4K experience... But it's up to u bud don't put your self in debt to do it.. You have a fantastic start to your Home theater room. ( So relax and enjoy what ya got up till now)
@@truhunk1 the 6040 is a Black 5040. No difference at all except 3yr warranty instead of 2, Xtra Bulb, Mount and Cable cover. The projectors themselves have ZERO difference.
Thanks Oscar. I agree that would have been a better comparison with two brand new bulbs but if I'm considering upgrading to a Faux 4k projector, I certainly do not want to waste $300 on a new bulb. Now if you want to send me $300, I'll gladly redo the comparison. ;) Thanks for watching.
Changing the bulb would do nothing to improve the clarity of the images produced by the Panasonic and that is really what these comparison videos are all about. The Epson is just a better projector, that is clear to see.
Epson by far has more shadow detail because of the iris! Also the colors look washed out on the Panny...it's almost black and white compared to the colorful pop of the Epson!
im a newer sub i love ur videos ur home theater its absolutely beautiful i dont have a projector but from what i can see the Epson definitely has better color it just pops more has way more detail and contrast u can really tell on Ready Player 1 when ur looking at Kong u can see more hairs more detail and by the way i freaking love that movie also on the city shot on Lucy it was just more clear u could see a lot more details on the buildings if u were 2 ask me i would definitely say that the Epson has a much better image awesome video
Well this makes no sense. I watched this video on a ae7000. And I see a lot more detail on the Epson side but that means my projector is able to replicate the difference of both. So better picture than your 8000 but probably not seeing what's your seeing in the room on the Epson. ???
@@Youthman the Epson 5040UB looks great in this video but I would like to see how the Sony 4K HDR projector (VPLVW295ES) compares to the Epson 5040UB, is it actually worth the extra money 🤷
I agree. This is straight out of the box with no calibration. One thing I have noticed is skin tones don’t have the pinkish hue on the Epson like is shown from my camera. Seems the cameras white balance is off but I didn’t want to try and mess with the color in post as I’m not very good at color correction. Something else I would love to learn how to do one day.
@@Youthman is the movie youre playing in 4k hdr? Going from hdr content and recording it in sdr can end up being atrocious since the non hdr camera cant pick up all the color hues. It makes it tough to show what hdr really is. Otherwise good video.
This is a bad review all around...where do I start....Lol. first you admitted in another video that the panasonic pt-ae 8000u projector has 2000 hours on it. second the panasonic is $334.69 brand new on amazon and the Epson 5040ub is $2400 not to mention the panasonic is 6 years old..Lol and without 4k or 4k enhancements.
Thanks for the feedback David. Yes I have been very up front with the fact that the Panny has 2000 hrs on it. I’m not seeing where the 8000u is $334.69 New on Amazon. I see one on Amazon for $1923.89. It was originally $2500 New. I purchased it new in Jan of 2015 and yes it’s not 4K. Just for clarification, this isn’t a review of the Epson. That will come in a month or two after I’ve had adequate time with it.
Looks like we both made a mistake. I had typed in the model number of my first projector (Panasonic AE3000u). Here is the 8000u on Amazon - Panasonic PTAE8000U 1080p Full HD Projector (2012 Model) www.amazon.com/dp/B009DNXS0Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9m2IBbT7Y1WG3
How was I wrong it's over $3,000...Lol. vs a $2400 projector..Lol. Yeah I knd of knew that the 8000u model was over the 3k mark. I look at prices all the time on amazon.
The 5040ub is far superior, I would definitely upgrade! :)

Thank you Bobby. This was one of the hardest videos to edit. LOL.
Love your videos man, can't wait for that anthem review though!
Also could you tell us your thoughts on the HDR performance of the epson?
Thanks, I’m still working on the Anthem Review. Should have it ready the week of Sept 10th
Will have to see how that plays out for them
The 5040ub is far superior to the UHD65. The contrast ratio of the Epson blows the Optoma out of the water.
This is comparing 1080p to half 4K (or 1528p pixel shifter). It is quite amazing how Epson has gotten away with calling a 2K pixel shifter (true HALF 4K). Epson (3LCD) is the only projection technology that has given up on 4K (pixel shifted or native).
Regardless of their business model, it looks great
I am looking forward to upgrading to native 4K
Do your blue-ray players support plex app ?
I’m not sure if they do or not. I’m not familiar with the plex app.
@@Youthman if yes I could share with u my library it's totally free u just need to create account and send me your user name easy man .
Gotcha I’ll have to look
@@Youthman I've sent invite I'm not sure if it's u or not 😉
dongwano thanks But I don’t have an account. Today was the first tim I’ve heard of it 😀
First thing first Youthman, you've got to buy a Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark and Calibration Disc 2nd Edition , than calibrate the two projectors, after that you could compared , because right now we can't tell what's the better one. After the calibration (take your time) you would think you've got a new Panasonic.P.S. excuse my poor english
It's obvious that PRO-UHD makes a noticeable difference in image quality.
With that being said, comparing the same images from both projectors side by side instead of splitting frames in half between projectors,
would have made this even easier to see. This was an informative and useful video nonetheless.
Thanks. I believe this was the first video I did an A/B video comparison. Still learning how best to present it
Panasonic has more blue than a white.
Also wish I had a new bulb for the Panny but it is what it is
I agree my BenQ kills that Epson in colors the lazer is almost ALWAYS brighter
Lasers are pretty pricey still right? I haven’t looked into them
@@Youthman well 3lcd always brighter than a DLP it's just the nature of the Beast
Pitbull, both the Epson and Panny are LCD. Are you referring to something else that is DLP?
Also, did you keep the Epson 5040ub?
hi, try optoma projector uhd60 better than epson
Thanks Mahmood. That Home Theater Dude just reviewed and compared the Epson 5040UB to the Optoma UHD65 and said he preferred the Epson over the Optoma. Just curious what your take on it is. What makes the Optoma UHD60 better? Have you had the opportunity to compare them directly side by side? Have a blessed day.
mahmood ali
Since when is a DLP projector better than an LCD projector? And since when is Optoma better than Epson?? Do your homework my friend
Yes the epson captures so much detail stuff you miss on Panasonic
The Epson has some serious red push and the colors are way off in comparison to the Panasonic. The Epson needs some greyscale calibration followed by contrast then brightness next the primary colors followed by secondaries if available then do gamma..go back then and tweak from the beginning the setting as these then fluctuate a bit..on the video the Panasonic is the better of the two just on its color accuracy
I sold the Epson and have upgraded to the JVC DLA-NX7
@@Youthman i will give it some thought thks
See if you can demo a projection setup locally
@@Youthman ok thks...if i have time i am very busy otr truck driver arrive Tuesday i will give a look thks again have a good evening..
Drive safe!
Colors definitely pop out on the epson
( So relax and enjoy what ya got up till now)
The 6040 is NOT true 4K. It's basically the same as the 5040.
Yes, I don’t believe Epson has a 4K home theater projector.
@@truhunk1 the 6040 is a Black 5040. No difference at all except 3yr warranty instead of 2, Xtra Bulb, Mount and Cable cover. The projectors themselves have ZERO difference.
For the sake of the comparison , you should have changed the lamp on your old Panasonic.
The Epson is just a better projector, that is clear to see.
cbcdesign001 a new bulb would do nothing to improve the clarity of a projector ????
Ohhh boy , what are you talking about ???
🙈
great video the 1080p still has a good picture but the 4k is noticable
I agree. Thanks
Epson by far has more shadow detail because of the iris! Also the colors look washed out on the Panny...it's almost black and white compared to the colorful pop of the Epson!
Yes I did notice the iris in the Epson. Not sure I like that feature turned on or off. Will have to see
If you turn it off...then your DEEP blacks will be lighter..more like dark grey like the Panny. It's the reason the Epson has a darker richer color.
keep up the great videos....cheers
Thanks John
im a newer sub i love ur videos ur home theater its
absolutely beautiful i dont have a projector but from what i can see the Epson definitely has better color it just pops more has way more detail and contrast u can really tell on Ready Player 1 when ur looking at Kong u can see more hairs more detail and by the way i freaking love that movie also on the city shot on Lucy it was just more clear u could see a lot more details on the buildings if u were 2 ask me i would definitely say that the Epson has a much better image awesome video
Thank you for the kind words Scott. Glad you are enjoying the content and thanks for subscribing!
Nice video youthman
Thanks Bassie
The Panasonic seems a poor 1080 projector. 4k videos on my Optima hd152x 1080p look superb.
the epson looks a little too red/bluish......it makes it too uniform in color rather than being dynamic.
Your Panasonic has a very heavy bias towards green.
I noticed that too. Looks like it desperately needs to be recalibrated. Plan on using the WOW disk
Well this makes no sense. I watched this video on a ae7000. And I see a lot more detail on the Epson side but that means my projector is able to replicate the difference of both. So better picture than your 8000 but probably not seeing what's your seeing in the room on the Epson. ???
The panasonic has entered the Matrix......
Haha
Thanks for video ...
You are quite welcome
The Epson 5040ub absolutely destroyed the Panasonic in this matchup
Agreed. The Panasonic did have some miles on the bulb too
@@Youthman the Epson 5040UB looks great in this video but I would like to see how the Sony 4K HDR projector (VPLVW295ES) compares to the Epson 5040UB, is it actually worth the extra money 🤷
Man the new one needs some calibrating
Thanks, honestly I’m not sure. I’m assuming the info button on the OPPO would reveal this?
@@Youthman is the disc a 4k hdr disc and do you have a 4k hdr blu ray player?
Scarlett Johansson is very beautiful
Ewww
Thanks for making me spend more money, I have the Panasonic also, but I'm going to buy the 4K Sony.
Haha don’t spend your money if you don’t want to. I don’t want that guilt 😀😀😀
Sony is real 4k. Epson is not real "4k"
The massive color difference tells me you didn't calibrate them. Buy yourself a colorimeter to do these videos properly. As it is, its useless
Thank you for your suggestion.
thumbnail= MARY HAIRDO
Never heard of that
its from ready player one
Ah...I don’t remember that part.
ready player one is a movie
I know it’s a movie...I included it in this video. 😂. I was referring to the part in the movie about Mary Hairdo
4K video comparison in 1080p video... lol
With most viewers watching the video on a mobile device.
I don't like neither one
Nothing wrong with that. I have been trying to get in touch with JVC and Sony but cannot get a reply
This is a bad review all around...where do I start....Lol. first you admitted in another video that the panasonic pt-ae 8000u projector has 2000 hours on it. second the panasonic is $334.69 brand new on amazon and the Epson 5040ub is $2400 not to mention the panasonic is 6 years old..Lol and without 4k or 4k enhancements.
sorry the panasonic is $3,334.69 on amazon....correction.
I see one panasonic say used like new for $2000...please tell me what you typed in amazon to pull up the 1923 new panasonic projector.
