Thanks for the video, Richard. When I was just about four or five, my late father who was a retired Naitonalist soldier took part in the construction of southern cross-island highway. My childhood was full of the memories of the incredibly beautiful mountains and the hardship that my father and his fellow servicemen had to endure building the road. Every day before calling it a day, they would blow up a piece of the mountain for the next day with dynamite. We lived in temporary shacks that served as shelters and dynamite boxes were used as my closet. We made friends with the aborigines and sometimes stayed at their places and ate their foods. It was a fun time. When I was six, my sister and I were sent to Hualian for school. We walked all the way down to 關山 to take trains to Taitung and then Hualian. So many great memories! I could still see in my mind's eyes the view from 埡口 clearly. I love the 百合花 I saw on the mountains and it is still my favorite flower. I planted all the seeds of the dragon eyes fruit after consuming the meat on places we stayed. Maybe some of the seeds had turned to big trees that bear fruits. I hope you will eat some fruits from the trees I planted on the road.
Good vid as always Richard. I wanted to ask you a question. You say that the road only opens at 7am daily (except Tuesday and Thursday), and closes at 5pm, but can you stay up there overnight? if you wanted to do all the nearby Baiyue over a couple of days? Or do you have to leave the same day? I'm thinking perhaps pitching my tent somewhere up there. Many thanks.
That's the info that I found. There are places to stay right by the checkpoints. Of course, you could pitch your tent up there, but if you get caught you would be fined and possibly banned for a period of time. And of course, I do not encourage that!
Your son hiking with you is the best Father's day gift.😀
