That’s awesome! It’s rare to find someone that researches before they get hermit crabs! Way to go! You’re already ahead of most! We sure are glad you have joined us here at CCS!
I'm so happy to see you're back with another instructional video! I'm going to be moving my hermit crabs to a 55 gal soon and have been doing more recent research, so I know I'm doing it right. I've found that some things have changed, like how to prepare substrate and recommended tank size to start. I'd love to hear your opinion on how things have changed. Would you please do more videos on this sort of thing? I learn so much better from watching videos than I ever do from reading and your videos have been a lifesaver for me. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
YAY for upgrades!!! Your crabs will LOVE the extra space to explore! Are you referring to the dry substrate change? If so, we did make a video with that update. We set up our HUGE tank build with the new recommendation (dry substrate) and we have ZERO issues! Our crabs have been molting great, no algae, bacteria, bugs, mold! It's been FANTASTIC!!! For tank size - are you referring to 2 gallon per small crab, 5 per medium crab, 10 per large crab, and 15 for jumbo crabs? If so, we like to stick to the 10 per crab because a lot of people won't plan on upgrading along the way and it's better to start off with more space. It's just safer for the molting crabs and it offers more room for enrichment. If I'm off or missing anything..... please do let me know! Thank you for watching and supporting our channel!
I'm in a Facebook group that teaches 29 gal minimum for 2-3 crabs (jumbos 15 per crab). They also teach 85 for both humidity and temp, but substrate was the big thing for me. The 5.1 ratio like usual, sand and echo earth dry, but they said to add a 3rd amendment. Depending on tank size, a certain cup amount of one or a mixture of these amendments: sphagnum moss, oyster shells, dry leaves, and/or earthworm castings. I even read somewhere to use primed brackish water instead of fresh to mix in for sandcastle consistency.
Oh wow! That’s pretty complicated for substrate. We follow Crab Street Journal/Land Hermit Crab Society guidelines. We have not had any issues, our crabs are thriving - to the point of breeding in captivity. I feel very confident in the recommendation for the 5:1 sand to eco earth, dry, substrate. The 29 gallon min for 2-3 crabs follows the 10 gallons per crab (until they are jumbo - then it’s 15 gallons per crab).
I've been binging your videos because I love all kinds of crabs and been researching and looking into getting some crabby babies. Just looking for a tank alone locally has honestly made me quite sad just seeing 'kits' everywhere and the tanks are so small and everything marketed with bright colours like they're a disposable pet :( it's upset me quite a bit now seeing how badly they're being mistreated. Thank you so much for all your insight and information. I'm still yet to find a decent enough tank at a good price but I'm very much so trying my best to get their home set up first. I've just found it quite alarming. Thank you so much for giving your pinchy friends the best life they can have and helping others to do the same :)
Thank you for doing your research first, making a great life for the crabs you will care for, and for sharing the love! We appreciate your support, thanks for watching!
I would love it if you could tell us how much prime to use for the regular and salt water. There aren't any helpful instructions on the bottle. For the pool water and for cleaning things. Thanks. You're videos have been the basis for my crabbies to have a happy and healthy life .
Great question! You need 2 drops of prime for every gallon of water. When I buy a new bottle of Prime, I use a toothpick to poke a small hole in the foil seal of the bottle. That wayI can measure drops easily. The good news is that you can not over Prime. So, for the prep of the foraging items, I just pour some Prime in the bucket/bowl. I hope this helps you out. Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi, I recently posted questions about my aggressive crabs. Of course I soon thereafter found your videos on aggressive behavior, and I’m trying your suggestions. I particularly was not aware that Washing the shells in salt water makes them more attractive to help encourage them to change shells, in case that was a reason for the aggression. Thanks for the informative video!! I have a question about glass tanks that is kind of unrelated if you don’t mind. I currently have a 10 gallon glass tank and am looking to upgrade to a 20 gal. I have looked online and have found that most do not come with lids. What brand of glass tank do your hermits use?
YAY for upgrades!!! We found almost all of our tanks used off of Facebook market. I have found, however, that most new tanks do not come with lids. we use Aqueon glass lids.
Some foods are just going to be little "smelly" and that is okay. If it is a fresh food we recommend removing it every 24 hours, that will help with the smell.
We happened to find this piece at a local pet store in Austin, tx. However, Chewy.com has a lot of cork wood! We have purchased many pieces from them in the past.
That happens to be oak bark and ash branches. You are correct - Pine and Cedar are not safe woods. We linked the safe/unsafe list in the description of the video.
@@CrabCentralStation Thank you 😊 and that helps me out alot. A friend of mine has a few ash tree's down at her place and I can not remember how tall they are, but if I was to guess, I would say about 100 feet tall
It could be just perspective. For some reason we were struggling with light reflection off the glass more than usual. So, to help with that, I moved close to the tank. We have 12-14” in all of our tanks. If anything, the substrate has settled some and is lower than it was in some of our other videos. It is indeed time for a good deep clean though!
Thank you for this video! I am hoping to collect some branches and leaves for my crabs.. are there any tree species I should avoid? Or ones that are guaranteed safe? I have heard the pine, spruce & cedar trees are bad.. but are there any others that may hurt my crabs?
Yes, absolutely. We put a link in the description of the video so that you can check what tree/leaves are safe and unsafe. check it out and have fun foraging for your crabs! They will love you for it!
If I'm not mistaken, I think it's now recommended 30 gal per crab, so you're looking at 120 gal! This is to provide enough space for them when they become jumbo crabs.
Crabs that are small-large can have 10 gallons per crab. If they live long enough to grow to the jumbo size, you will need to upgrade to 15 gallons per crab. I hope this helps! (keep in mind the bigger you can go, the better!)
@@CrabCentralStation I’ve had my 3 hermit crabs for about 2 in a half years and just adopted a new one from craigs list (might have spelt that wrong) and my 3 others have gotten big, so that’s why I asked , thanks for the help!
Thank you for sharing a ton of knowledge about the hermit crab, I have one question, is the deep water tank really needed to keep the crab alive? I just have a small tank filled with mixed substrate and sand, small twigs and a couple empty shells. I can't make the proper pool for my 3 crab in it, my tank about 20cm x 40cm so what should I do?
Hello 👋 - yes, they need to be able to fully submerge in their water pools (both salt and fresh). They have modified gills, they breath a mixture of oxygen and water (moisture). They carry water in their shells to keep their gills wet. I would definitely look for a larger tank. Your crabs need room to roam around as well. They need sufficient space for molting so that they don’t eat each other under the sand while molting. Space is very important for them to thrive.
@@CrabCentralStation Big thanks for answering my questions and also educating me about how hermit crabs can be happy and live. Soon I will buy a bigger tank so they can be happy and live. Is the 120 gal tank can be enough space for 4 hermit crab?
Yes! 120g is a great size! You and your hermies will LOVE that tank. If you want to get that tank set up and stable, you can add your 4 hermit crabs AND still have room to rescue/adopt (check Facebook market for people wanting to get rid of their crabs) 8 more! Each crab needs 10 g of space to thrive. So, a 120g tank can safely house 12 total crabs.
Hey CCS! i have a huge question, i live in the country and i have vines in some trees that i thought could possibly be neat things to add to my new terrarium..however im not quite sure if i can. can you help? i have always called them grape vines ( not sure what they actually are)
Are trumpet flower vines safe for hermit crab inclosures. My husband just trimmed my trumpet flower vines and there are some amazing looking vines that look like good climbing branches. But I wasn’t sure if they are crab safe
Love this video! But I have been wondering more about feathers.... Are they all safe? I'm assuming all natural ones are, but what about feathers at Hobby Lobby for example? Obviously some would be bad such as the neon colored ones(they must be dyed right?), but what about the more natural looking ones they have there? Not sure how to tell which ones are completely natural. I was just gonna stay away from those and hope I find one in the wild...
That is a great question! I would stay away from craft stores or any source that doesn't explain exactly how the feathers were processed or where they came from.
Can I use any leaves from my yard? If so how can I prepare them to put in tank? Also I have a big piece of petrified wood that came from the ocean. Is this wood safe to put in the krabitat
This is the perfect video for you 😊. In the video I teach you how to prep the items for your tank, if you can forage from your yard, and what is safe. Check out the li is in the description of the video too.
My crabs passed last year after 15 years, and I'm left with a big supply of shells. I mean, a LOT of shells. I don't want them to go to a landfill or to crafting. Do you know where I can donate these shells to make sure they are going to hermit crabs?
So so sorry to hear about your sweet crabs! I would recommend connecting with the land hermit crab owners society on Facebook to see if anyone in that group needs shells!!
Hi I just saw your this about your leftover shells…I’m seeking larger shells for my two and particularly the largest size possible of the brown turban shells which they really prefer. I’ll pay fair prices if you’d like to sell them. Are you going to get more hermit crabs and start over? Good luck!
Check out the links in the description of the video for a complete list of safe leaves, flowers, wood. There are also links to safe shops that sell these items. Thanks for watching!

@Crab Central Station we have a little craft mesh ramp in and out and idk if my mom would let me get a heater she knows it needs one but there so much money🤑
Hi Daniela Restrepo, check out the link in the description of this video for safe and unsafe items to add to the tank. There are so many that to name them all in this video would have been arduous. The link also leads you to safe and unsafe foods 😊
Ok so HUGE problem: I got hermit crabs and I give them fresh food daily. There are SO MANY fruit flies in the tank!! The maggots/larva keep increasing by the day, and I literally have THOUSANDS in the tank! What do I do to get rid of them? I’ve tried to keep the lid on for as long as I can, I’ve done cider vinegar solutions and other stuff on the internet, but they just keep sneaking in!!!‼️‼️ HELP HELP HELP!!!!!
Oh man, I'm so sorry. Okay, so stop feeding fresh foods for a couple weeks. Just feed dehydrated foods. You can order some online (I suggest Just2OldCrabs). Or, you can pick some up at the store (dehydrated: shrimp, meal worms, blood worms, coconut, veggie mixes - look in the reptile section for these options. Just make sure they are whole ingredient foods, nothing added). You can smear olive oil or coconut oil on a paper plate and wave it around in the tank to catch the flying bugs. I would probably take your wood pieces out and wash and bake them. If you have moss, toss it and wait until the infestation is under control before adding it back in. I hope this helps!

This is like a year later. But anyone have a reputable place to buy moss for hermiess?
Glad to see you again!! Did you redo the tanks?! Substrate looks deeper... or maybe it's my imagination
We have not redone any tanks!
I thought the same thing! It must just be the fact this video was recorded closer to the tanks than usual.
They will love you for it!
whats the other moss is, sphagnum and ?
Hey! What’s the best tank size for 4 Purple pinchers?
If I'm not mistaken, I think it's now recommended 30 gal per crab, so you're looking at 120 gal! This is to provide enough space for them when they become jumbo crabs.
@@susanbecker5610 ah , I was thinking that but wasn’t sure. thanks!
I can't seem to find a 40 gallon tank with a glass lid anywhere would you know where to get one?
We usually order on Amazon.
Can I add isopods or springtails?
Hey CCS! i have a huge question, i live in the country and i have vines in some trees that i thought could possibly be neat things to add to my new terrarium..however im not quite sure if i can. can you help? i have always called them grape vines ( not sure what they actually are)
How cool! Yes! Grapevine is safe. Just prep them like other wood in this video.
Are trumpet flower vines safe for hermit crab inclosures. My husband just trimmed my trumpet flower vines and there are some amazing looking vines that look like good climbing branches. But I wasn’t sure if they are crab safe
In the description of the video we have a link to a list of safe and unsafe foraging items. Check out that link for Trumpet vines.
What about organic mulch from home depot?
How long can a hermit crab live? I have one that we have had for 13 years. So he is at least 14 years old.
They can live up to 30-40 years in captivity
@@CrabCentralStation thanks
Love this video! But I have been wondering more about feathers.... Are they all safe? I'm assuming all natural ones are, but what about feathers at Hobby Lobby for example? Obviously some would be bad such as the neon colored ones(they must be dyed right?), but what about the more natural looking ones they have there? Not sure how to tell which ones are completely natural. I was just gonna stay away from those and hope I find one in the wild...
That is a great question! I would stay away from craft stores or any source that doesn't explain exactly how the feathers were processed or where they came from.
Who is that that burrowed down to molt?
Unknown crabby! We will find out when they come up 🥰
For dayli use, can you suggest for me??
Check out Just2OldCrabs on Etsy. They have great food!
Can giv them salt water or normal our drinkable water
Can I use any leaves from my yard? If so how can I prepare them to put in tank? Also I have a big piece of petrified wood that came from the ocean. Is this wood safe to put in the krabitat
This is the perfect video for you 😊. In the video I teach you how to prep the items for your tank, if you can forage from your yard, and what is safe. Check out the li is in the description of the video too.
Hy mem.. I am from indonesia.. Nice to meet u...
Hello! Nice to meet you too! Thank you for watching our videos!
Good luck!
Love it
Thanks for watching, Emma!
What is the live plant in your tank that you have there? I still keep thinking about putting a live plant in my tanks
We don’t have any live plants in our tank at the moment. The crabs destroy them so fast!
@@CrabCentralStation Oh wow, what kind of live plant do you use in your tank so I know what to get and not put the wrong ones in.
I got a question can land hermit crabs live with other creatures cuz i know water hermit crabs can live with other fish
They only other "creatures" safe to house with hermit crabs are "clean up crew bugs" such as isopods and springtails. That's it.
If you buy collateral wood or bark from the store is it necessary to soak and bake them or can they go directly in the tank?
CHOLLA wood
Items purchased from retail stores are usually safe to place in the tank without the prep.
I have a question can they eat meal worms that are dead from walmart I got mine from there and for some reason they didnt eat any can you please help?
They can have meal worms! Sometimes crabs are picky, and sometimes it takes them a while to warm up to a new food. Give them another chance!
Are coconut crabs legal
How do I get dried flowers? Also what leaves are good?
Check out the links in the description of the video for a complete list of safe leaves, flowers, wood. There are also links to safe shops that sell these items. Thanks for watching!
can i feed my hermit crab with oyster mushroom
What to do if a hermit crabs bites u with its big hand
Coffee grounds?
The cartoon warm photo of the warm on the potty is price less and cute.
Thank you! We thought the worm was so cute!
@@CrabCentralStation You are welcome 😊
….but what about fruit and veggies? Mine lose their minds over broccoli and blueberries.
Build my hermit crabs will not stop partying
is spanish moss ok for hermit crabs
No, it's best to stay with spaghnum moss.
Hey crab sentrol station I made my water pool so my largest crab can submerge in it fully but my small crab went in it and he died inside of it today and now I'm scared that my big crab will be lonely because he didn't see the small crab before we took him out. And my mom doesn't want to get more crabs can you help me? And its winter but I don't have a heater on the back of are tank and I can't get leafs and other things like that him scared there both going to die because I don't have the right things. HELP😭
I’m so sorry for your loss! Did you have a safe and easy way for your little hermit crab to get out of the water pool? You definitely need to be able to heat the tank this winter.
@Crab Central Station we have a little craft mesh ramp in and out and idk if my mom would let me get a heater she knows it needs one but there so much money🤑
It’s a 100% necessity for their survival. Without warmth they will die.
are pine cones okay for hermit crabs ?
Hi Daniela Restrepo, check out the link in the description of this video for safe and unsafe items to add to the tank. There are so many that to name them all in this video would have been arduous. The link also leads you to safe and unsafe foods 😊
I didnt know that pellets were deadly to My hermit crabs ive been feeding them pellets for 7 weeks 😢 will they die!??!
No
@@fireeestarter1 no duh it was a joke also I never did that
What kind of leaves do hermit crab like?
So many!!! Burning bush, oak, maple, almond…. Check out the list of safe foraging items in the link provided in the description of the video.
Does it have to be dry or fresh leaves is fine?
You can use fresh leaves as well. Prepare them the same way as the dried leaves.
Haaa you have one Buried moulting in your tank.
