  • Quick demonstration and review of the RCBS M500 Reloading scale. Mechanical reloading scales are reliable and dependable - every reloader should have one, even if it is not your main scale.
*Had a little trouble with camera angle and 'zero' but the video shows the repeatability and accuracy of the scale.*
"The RCBS M500 Mechanical Scale 98915 provides right- or left-handed operation and a wealth of big-time features at an affordable price. Featuring a proven two-poise design that lets you weigh up to 505 grains with +/-0.1-grain accuracy, the RCBS M500 Sale also offers RCBS' magnetic damping system for fast readings, and maintenance-free movement. Great review - still my go-to method for my reloading. Old school at its best. I watched a video by someone who still uses this scale but he had a camera hooked up to a television on the wall so that he could see the "arrows" better. Pretty neat idea.

Hello sir. I recently subscribed and have been watching your videos for a couple of days now. I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see somebody who knows about reloading still using these scales. I do all my mass measurements using a triple beam agate laboratory scale and it is scary accurate! But I just wanted to say good for you. I guess we're a dying breed 😁

Great video. I’m in the process of setting my reload room up after a move two years ago. While I’m at it I’m updating some equipment and the RCBS M500 will be one of those replacing the oldie but goodie Pacific I’ve use for a few years. My press is the RCBS IV which I’ve been really happy with but I have a question, since you’re a Johnny’s Reloading Bench fan, are you considering updating to the Redding T7 press? I’m retired so time is not critical but the idea of setting up your dies once for the only caliber I reload sounds good. My wife gave me the extra bedroom so I’m reloading in heat and a/c now so I’m a happy man. Again, thanks for the video.

Very helpful review. Thank you! Given imperfect vision and parallax, I think the +/- .1 gn. on a digital is as accurate as I can consistently use a mechanical. QUESTION: Since gravity doesn't lie, why are check weights necessary for a mechanical scale?

Gravity may be true - but my scale set up might not be. The check weights are a final check that everything is working and assembled properly.

I have the same scale, only problem is adjustments are clumsy, fine adjustment jumps around easily.

*** I had some issues with the camera angle and displayed zero - this is a great example of parallax! The scale did repeat to where the zero shows and without the camera between me and the scale, it is easy to see and set up a solid zero.
Finally, this shows the reason it is important to get that scale as close to eye level as possible. Looking down on the pointer can cause the problem we are seeing here.
    Thanks for your understanding!*

    Have you tried the M1000.
I have the money to invest in my first scale, is the extra money worth it or is the M500 better for light stuff?

I have not tried the M1000 - unless the 500 does not have enough capacity for you, I'd stick with the 500.

Is your M500 still working to your satisfaction?

It's not properly zeroed. The zero line is obviously below the arrow

Randy, thanks for the feedback. I noted in the description that I was having trouble with camera angle and zero (parallax). That aside, the scale did show repeatability and proper function. I'll add a pinned comment to avoid future confusion. Again, thank you!
