  • Finally finishing the first bent! In this video, I cut the dovetail tenons in the tie beams before assembling and draw boring the bent.
    Also, sorry for the construction noise in this one. I try to film when things are quiet, but it’s not always possible. Hope you enjoy the video regardless!

    What rule of thumb do you use to determine the width of the tenon?

  • @mariogatica2363

    Hello...is there a reason why the wedge is driving from outside in ??
    And what to do if you put a wall on that wedge, it is the need to cut the wedge flat ??

    • @NicTaylorWoodworking
      @NicTaylorWoodworking  3 года назад

      Good question! the wedge goes from the outside because it’s completing the dovetail shape of the through tenon. The idea is that the tenon can’t pull out, because it’s being forced down into the dovetail mortise. It’s a bit hard to explain without pictures :)
      I leave the wedges long for now so I can tighten them a few more times after the frame is raised, but yes, I will need to cut the wedge flush to put the siding on.

    Great work! Love the videos - keep filming, I think you could get quite big, especially as more guys get inspired to Timber Frame their own houses (myself included). Looking forward to seeing the end result!

    What is added by having a wedge tenon as opposed to simply a tight fitting through tenon? The latter would actually seem stronger. - Thanks, love the videos!

      Both are totally fine. The idea with the dovetailed tie beams is that the dovetail creates a hook that counteracts the force from the roof. The roof pushes the walls out, the dovetail makes that impossible. Thanks for watching!

    I love that dog POV shot that starts the video! Did you make that saw we see at 0:20? If so, do you have plans for it? If you bought it, do you mind sharing the details? Thanks. I love your videos.

      I based the saw off of a design by Blackburn tools. He actually a video of how to build the saw on their website. www.blackburntools.com/

    Sorry for all the background noise folks! There has been a ton of construction in my area lately. Hoping to post more frequently now that the holidays are done. Cheers!

    Beautiful work. Your hard work is art.
    Although I'm pretty sure your dog thinks you're a bit nuts.
    Are you using any books or plans for reference? I am planning on starting on a workshop build in the spring.
    Thanks for sharing.

      ha, my dog will just sit there for hours wondering why i’m not playing frisbee instead.
      I’m using Will Beemer’s book. it’s pretty solid for a beginner and has plans for a 12x16 structure inside that’s pretty easy to customize. Report back when you start your project. I’d love to hear about it!

    I can't seem to find an answer around the web....... are the dowels a draw bore? If so do you assembly and mark then disassemble and bore the tenon like you would making furniture?

    • @NicTaylorWoodworking
      @NicTaylorWoodworking  2 года назад

      Yes, the dowels are draw bored. It’s a bit of a hassle to assemble everything, pull them apart, etc. So i just offset mine a 1/8” or 1/4” (can’t remember which). Hopefully that helps!

      Unfortunately, yes. I was hoping to have some friends help with the raising but with Covid i’m going to build a simple crane to raise it. Fingers crossed!
