MY DAD BOUGHT A 1974 NORLIN ERA SG STANDARD BRAND NEW IM GETTING READY TO DO SOME RECORDING WITH THAT GUITAR IN A FEW MINUTES I REPLACED THE BRIDGE LAST MONTH THATS IT THE GUITAR IS ALL ORIGINAL AND I HAVE PLAYED THE SHIT OUT OF IT FOR THE PAST 30YRS THE FINISH ON THE BACK OF THE NECK HAS WORN DOWN TO THE NATURAL WOOD COLOR THIS GUITAR LOOKS JUST LIKE THE PICTURE IN THAT BOOK AND SO FAR I HAVE NOT SEEN A GUITAR FROM THAT ERA THAT WAS BUILT AS WELL AS MY SG THE TONE HAS SEEMED TO MELLOW OVER THE YEARS ITS A FANTASTIC GUITAR THAT IN MY OPINION IS GOING TO INCREASE IN VALUE QUITE A BIT MY DAD STILL HAS THE RECEIPT FOR IT ALL THESE YEARS THANKYOU FOR THE VIDEO
My first "real" guitar was an S-1. I bought it in 1980 for a couple of huns. I didn't know nothing except it said Gibson on the headstock. It played really well and improved my playing and ear. Wish I still had it,,,
To all the Gibson snobs who turn their nose's up to the Norlin era Les Pauls? All I have to say is: Pete Townsend, Lyndsey Buckingham, Randy Rhoads and John Sykes.
I am noted for my bass playing in my return back to Gibson'sbut I do have quite a few of Gibson basses that I have three resurrected pulled out of the shelf got them back running and I'm using them or their duplicates especially if they're a very rare like a 1960 EBO Les Paul junior bass with banjos To the point I really enjoy your stories and all the stuff that you do and talk about super cool thank you
It appears this was printed in early 1978. It might have been a bit too early to include a "The SG" but that is the only model that I noticed missing from the late 70s. See any others not covered?
Good Catch. The 25/50 is not in this book. Based on the limited edition serial numbers of some very early examples of the 25/50s, they were not made until June/July of '78 so perhaps they didn't think they would be ready for the '78 catalog year or they just wanted to leave them as custom ordered instruments
Yes, this is the '78 Catalog and I believe those other models were discontinued by then. - I'm still looking for a good 70s SG Custom to demo for you! Tough to find at a good price
Enjoyable video. I few interesting things. The "Moog" version was competing against the MPC Electra with the snap in effects, which at the time had some connection with Peter Frampton as an endorser. The original Les Paul Recording also had a three pin din connection for a microphone on the body of the guitar. You are also correct on the SG's. The necks are amazing. Hint. Same neck on a Blues Hawk. Most under rated guitars in the 90's gibson line and are climbing in steady in value. You just have to re-flue the mollies holding the p-90's in place.

The only Les Paul custom that I own is a 1974 in cherry sunburst that is a semi hollow body with no f holes. It really has an interesting sound and I've never seen another one for sale.
Hi Trog. Do you have any parts catalog from Gibson 70's era? I recently got a ES-335 CRS, it has the switch that split coils broken and I woul like to get one, but i don't know the part number or anything about, can you help with it? Thanks
i saw that gibson gold tone amp you have i have looked for one of those for ages never seen one up close what is a good price for one..are the just a clean tone amp do they come in a head..
They made them in a lot of formats. There is a small 5-15w, the Ga-30 like I have, then a GA-60 that has both the large speakers and then there is a head and cabinet form. The Goldtone cabinets are really nice looking. There were brown tolex and black tolex versions of each as well. As far as a fair price to pay - I bought mine in my 'playing' days where I didn't worry about resale value. It was my first tube amp and I paid $1300. You can generally pick them up between 800-1000 though. When I bought mine, it was the only one on the market. What is unique about them is with a foot switch you can blend the clean and dirty channels for an interesting sound. Its a very British sounding amp. It produces really nice cleans, but I wasn't a big fan of the distorted sounds over time - hence why I used a Marshall JMP1-C for my 'dirty' sound in my demos. It's not that the distorted sounds are bad, it's just not the sound I wanted to cover other songs. I'd suggest checking one out, but its didn't really fit as a one amp for everything type of amp for me.
Cool catalog. I had the LP Custom maple fingerboard in natural back in the day. They called it the "blonde beauty". Strikingly beautiful it was. I was young and stupid, traded it for a Stratocaster in '79. Still have the Strat, wish I'd kept the LP instead.
Norlin SGs are nothing like the the early and late 60's SGs. They changed the look and feel of them by shifting the neck and skipping the the effort on the contours and hardware.
the S1 is just like the black one in your book maple neck and all except bill lawrence pickups with the orignal gibson case its pretty sweet...S N 06153129

Hey Trogly, I have to thank you big! I´ve been looking the exact specs of my 1978 LP Standard Ebony for a long time! I am happy now...
My first "real" guitar was an S-1. I bought it in 1980 for a couple of huns. I didn't know nothing except it said Gibson on the headstock. It played really well and improved my playing and ear. Wish I still had it,,,
Thank you for taking the time to show all the pages of the book @ 19:53 much appreciated ;-)
Your stuff (Trogly) is endlessly informative and educational. Thank you.
To all the Gibson snobs who turn their nose's up to the Norlin era Les Pauls? All I have to say is: Pete Townsend, Lyndsey Buckingham, Randy Rhoads and John Sykes.
Very good man. If thats not enuf ,there are more.
They were good enough for Angus.
Impartial Observers Yup!!
anglovirtual Proving my point about Gibson snobs! Uninformed comments disparaging great guitars with nothing factual to back it up. Well done. 👍

I bet this catalogue is worth a pretty penny. I'd rock it!

did they mention the 25/50 anniversary model?
never mind...printed in 78...question answered.

Just got a '77 SG Custom! Look for that review in the coming week!
Cool catalog! Cool vid! Thanks for sharing!
I like the videos. First time I have seen your face... You look like Dwight K. Shrute. Rock on!

Malcolm Young used to play an L-65 custom in the very early days of AC/DC

The '06' prefix in the serial number indicates a 1976 date of manufacture
