Someone tell this guy Honda's design work was completed 5 years ago with the HondaE. All they had to do was make it 4 doors, lift it a little and slap in a bigger battery. Would've sold them all! I don't understand why Honda threw that entire language out the door despite everyone loving it
@@Mobile_Dom The e sold ~12k units total worldwide 2020-22 (maybe a couple thousand more in '23-24) -- about half of what Honda inexplicably expected. The e undersold only due to price/range.
Acura has a good history recently of having concepts looking quite close to production with the TLX and Integra concepts. This is probably further out from actual production than those were though (those concepts were revealed a year before production cars were shown). In terms of video content, I like concepts when they reflect details that could actually hit production. For this video specifically, the interview with Acura staff was great to get into their heads and see what they think about specific details and their thought processes, which affects the eventual production car. On the other hand, Audi as a whole is an example of bad concepts in this regard.
Love it! Nothing wrong with adding more depth to your channel with some inside information, giving us a preview into the future of Honda/Acura. It’s great to give us something exciting to look forward to that you can keep us updated on as this develops from concept to reality. As an enthusiast, I want as much information about where EVs are headed, so I can plan for the future. If the production version of this looks anywhere near as good, I may decide to get this instead of the Rivian R2 I have reserved. Keep doing videos like this! So awesome.
Nothing wrong with covering concept cars as long as we don't try to speculate too much into something that may never be made. This probably will. Let's expect they kick it off with good battery options, good efficiency, NACS and decent driver assistance features. It's not my design preference, but many will like it, I'm sure
I think you have to cover the concepts if you are going to attend different shows. It will give an opportunity to compare the actual production vehicle to production.
Remember the original Honda Passport? "One and done" SUV until their Pilot/Ridgeline/Odyssey platform could be developed. Honda being Honda. Thank you for sharing.
I would have been more interested in what other EV they are targeting with this in order to get a feel for the specs they are seeking. For example the Hyundai/Kia EV's are racking up car of the year awards left and right so are they targeting those vehicles or the MY is the best selling EV so are they targeting it!
5:27 - "NO TINY E FOR YOU...!!!" (best ghost of Soichiro Honda voice) fwiw it's true, as some have observed if you study Honda Mega Corp's history at the Quail whatever "concept" they show, it's a vehicle they ultimately go on to PRODUCE. that Indy Yellow Integra sedan based off the Civic Type-R sitting there (although first shown at the LA Autoshow in 2021) they produced, the blue Ultium Acura ZDX EV concept (that i just charged next to in Honda Prologue form at EA after leaving Corvettes at Carlisle last friday) was first shown at the Quail in 2022 - they produced... and the blue Acura Type S concept (that later became the new TLX sedan) that was first shown at the Quail back in 2019 they produced. the concept was then displayed in November that year in Vegas at SEMA 2019 and i still have the pics i took of it on my phone (while not making it to production, looking close at the details i noticed their use of Forged Carbon trim heretofore first seen only on the Lamborghini Huracan Performante).
The front end looks a bit like a buick, but the rest is really nice. Its well known that acura concepts are pretty much identical to the production cars, so hopefully the design doesnt change much.
It looks great - and I hope they reduce the diameter of the wheels by at least 4" - maybe 5" smaller diameter. And man, the hood is about 2' too long - push the cab forward and gain a bunch of room.
You know it's a classy event when even Kyle is wearing a button down!! Although not a camera friendly design FYI. Some pretty sweet cars there! Kinda glad Honda/Acura are going to their own platform.
I saw my first ev in 1999 when Honda showed off an ev honda civic hatch back. They told me how the top speed was limited and I said they should make it fast
Honda and Nissan will be collaborating on ev's most likely to bring down the cost of the battery platforms because you will have multiple models using the same battery platforms should be interesting to see
I wonder if that wheel, as intricate as it is, ends up in production. Hope so. A designer interview is nice but who knows how much of its design will ever make it to production? An interview with an engineer who could talk about the platform would be better…But how is Honda going to allow an engineering interview on a product that doesn’t have final approval? It tough. But I liked hearing what there was to know about Honda’s plans. It is a big deal.
Concept cars are annoying. I wish manufacturers would just be transparent about the elements of the vehicle they're focusing on from a design and practicality perspective vs trying to make you believe they're going to build what you see. Having someone like Dave talk about these elements is great. Definitely more open about design than what I've seen from other auto manufacturers. I think what would make it interesting is if you took elements that you can clearly see won't work at scale and challenged their thought process to explain how they intend to make it work.
Ultium in 2020 tech. No big loss. Was behind a Honda Prologue in traffic the other day, and that thing has school lunch lady hips😮. So damn wide😅. Looks wider than a Range Rover.
I think it was a fun video; keep doing them when you can interview someone who helped build it. If you were just talking to a marketing person, wouldn't be as interesting, IMHO.
My first gut reaction is that the actual car they end up with will look very different. Not much to this since they don't even show the interior. Just the kind of concept that Kyle hates. But who knows, maybe Honda will surprise me. We know it's going to need side view mirrors.
I didn't really understand what Dave Marek wanted to say with and about the car design (word salad with platitudes) I more got the feeling that something or someone else has designed the car.
Thinking about Acura ZDX and who they think they were selling that to, found out Mercedes EQB were cheaper than their base model of ZDX, and can get the seven-seater a little more of ZDX AWD model.
There are so many slow (and slowly driven) fastback SUVs nowadays that no, they do not scream performance to me. Only lost utility from the lack of height in the rear cargo area. It's supposed to be a sport UTILITY vehicle, remember? Love a design walkaround, though. Those wheels rule.
I like concepts, it is when companies pro.ote it as this will be 95% like the a tual production vehicle, but then deliver something half like the concept vehicle. I think the more recent example is the ID Buzz. Very cool concept, very dull final vehicle. If it is content OoS has time to make, so be it. Those who haye concept vehicles can skip it. I just would not invest a ton of time into it. I knowvrhe Monterey Automoti e events have tons of great vehicles and chances to see things you might not otherwise, so doing quick videos like this is fine.
Is it silly for me to look at this and see ICE proportions? Is that just what people like? Is it the best way to do crash mitigation? Or….range extender?
Honda rebadged the Isuzu Rodeo as a Passport for almost 10 years. Let’s see how much capital they are willing to spend to manufacture their own design and how long they want to drag that spend out to reduce the sticker shock on shareholders. I think GM was the majority shareholder in Isuzu at that time too. Or at least a large shareholder.
Concept car coverage isn't my favorite, it's much more enjoyable to see testing of cars we can buy. The 10% challenge is the best you do and there are so many more vehicles that need that test, just my opinion and what I'm interested in.
Concepts that are 99% close to production yes, but something like this where probably 30-50% of it will change is a waste of time. Yeah we might recognize resemblance of this but that's about it
Why would agencies like FMVSS piss him off? These agencies give designers and engineers a reason for their existence. Are these agencies sometimes slow to react? Sure.
