Olga I wish you & RUclips were around 17 years ago when we moved into our house! 😉 we have a small garden in the UK and I've made all the mistakes you've mentioned. Now we have a few established flowering shrubs, lots of lavender and David Austin Rose's & a couple of Naked Dawn climbers but we need some privacy from overlooking windows. My husband says dig the roses up and plant tall evergreens but I can't bare to part with them. Very much looking forward to the rest of your series. I am looking forward to this series! I garden in a smallish yard in zone 5b with several large mature trees. Gardening with all the shade and tree roots is a challenge! I've made the mistakes you mention - buying lots of fun plants without a plan, and also giving up and neglecting the garden for several years. Starting again with more knowledge this time!
Quick question regarding the 7:54 segment Olga: are you opposed to mixed screen borders? They offer an opportunity to grow a great variety of shrubs and trees on a small lot, and the bonus is that if you have, say, an arborvitae that dies, you won't have a gaping hole in your living fence. It can easily be replaced with another tree or shrub you've developed an interest in while satisfying the need to collect a variety of plants. That being said, a mixed screen does not provide the formal/european garden that looks to be your personal style. It's a beautiful style, I just think there is a time and place for eclectic-style gardens on small lots that are just as peaceful and inviting. What are your thoughts on this?
I see the point of growing mixed hedge. I am not opposed to it. I am used to homogeneous hedges here in US, but when I travel in Europe, those hedges grow on me. Plus your point of substitution of dead plant for a different one in a mixed hedge is great.

For example, my smallish backyard has a section that is almost completely in the shade most of the day and has another section that has sun all day long. I have done exactly what you said, for many years I was intimidated by the placement of the plants. However, I am venturing out and trying new things in the garden. I started the rose garden with 5 David Austin roses and am loving it. I want to add lavender and herbs to another part of the garden. Very excited about this journey.
I have a smaller garden and I still have landscapers come in & handle the mulching for me. I have beds around the backyard, on the side of the house, & in the front of the house, so it just makes sense for them to handle that part in Spring & Autumn while I care for the plants the rest of the year.
Hi there, I didn't deal with tip blight on my arborvitaes. Never had that problem, just read about it. I might do the research and produce video on it, it wound't be from personal experience though. Happy gardening!

Shrubs for poor soils I would say, look into verbena bonariensis perennial. It is not a shrub, but it has super deep tarp root and once established, nothing can kill it. It becomes bigger and better every year, needs sun to thrive, and eventually reach the size of the shrub.

Welcome to my channel! It is good to have you here! I just moved my tools into tiny shed which I have at the back of my house and the mover went into garage. Not the best solution, but compromises are needed for small spaces.
