To be fair... Lum and Kahm are very similar in appearance, abilities and roles in their stories. Hell even their names are similar. They're both super powered aliens, one shoots lightning one shoots fire, they both get married to the main character, they both have greeny/blue hair ect.
I could certainly see Lum as being an inspiration. But at the same time, Manabe was going in vastly different directions with the concept, and telling a much more complicated story than a simple romcom. The OVA, meanwhile, really does seem to come off as a Urusei Yatsura ripoff. So even then, his anger would be justified.
Well, no, Lum considers herself "married" to Ataru (which he frequently objects to). Rumiko has stated more than once that their relationship will never be consummated.
I first encounterd Outlanders in the early 90's by picking up a Dark Horse issue at a giant yard sale or swap meet. It was the first anime boobs I'd ever seen. Johji Manabe has inspired me ever since. Love, love his work, particularly his biomechanical designs. And his girls, of course.
love that you sort of "homage" outlanders OVA ending with the butt ugly toadstools by ending your video with the butt ugly toadstools. we now share your pain. on another note, it really does suck when someone pours their heart to make a story only for a studio to alter it simply to jump on a bandwagon thinking if they do that with their product and make it hornier, it'll sell. and we know this is a problem not just in Japan, but studio interference trying to change someone's work is also common in the west, case in point your Looney tunes retrospective.
I got the first issue of the Dark Horse translation my last year of high school (I think it was on sale through the Bud Plant catalog, and I took a gamble), and I remember thinking that it was really good.
The irony being that this was tame compared to the sex and violence that flooded early anime rental shelves. And It didn't have the likeable characters you could get from Tenchi Muyo instead.
its so weird to hear how much this ova was hated in japan because i liked it so much i bought animation cels from it lmao. i guess thats why they were so easy to find

After the anime boom following Akira in the UK, I tried to read as much manga as I could get my hands on so I owe a lot to Dark Horse comics. I only read a few Outlanders issues but I was a big fan of Manabe’s Caravan Kidd. Interesting history on this one
I actually received the OVA on DVD as a donation to my show, and I enjoyed it, that one line aside. (Though honestly, ableist language notwithstanding, the delivery is still pretty funny.) But it's an interesting history that it came with.
Despite being a fan of Caravan Kidd and Outlanders, I completely forgot about the anime. Thanks for the research, its fascinating to learn about these older over looked work and the context of its success or failure. Also glad you mentioned Toren Smith (who got a homage in Gunbuster!) contribution to the manga scene as well.
I think Doraemon would have done very well over here in the US if they showed it when kids were watching. On Disney XDS they showed it in the summer in the middle of the afternoon when kids are in camp.
Okay so not only am I justified in my feeling towards this OVA but I was right on the money when it came to the main premise of the OVA's story. It's a shame really because this looked like a very beautiful video with it's visuals and did somehow seem to just have more going on within.
Outlanders isn't forgotten by this oldtaku! I have the VHS, the DVD and the Dark Horse series of it. Also have Johhi Manabe's other series Capricorn on VHS and have the series Caravan Kidd from Dark Horse! Once Caravan was over, he seemed to disappear and I've always wondered what happened to him.
He started doing straight-up H-Manga, (after Thunder Jet, which was also animated, but never localized). Ring Mama, is probably the most notable of his H-work.
it's a weird feeling when you actually know the author of an obscure retro anime, but have encountered them through a completely different work before. like ring x mama...
deep dive on Toren Smith, please! That guy is basically the godfather of the US anime industry, and he deserves to be heralded as an absolute hero of the fandom!
Years ago I found volumes 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 of the old school Dark Horse run at a used book store. I didn't know what they were other than old manga, they were a few bucks a piece, and in great shape. I read the first 2 and liked them, deciding I would watch the OVA after I found volumes 3 and 6. I still haven't done that and now I think I'll avoid that OVA. Props to Manabe for drawing drunk Maetel on Twitter all the time.
I am so happy and ecstatic to see some Johji Manabe content covered here! From Outlanders, Drakuun, or even Caravan Kid, I'm always excited to see his works!❤ Thank you?!!! Wonder if we'll see Capricorn in the future ?
It's surprising to see that Manabe was so disappointed with all the sexual scenes considering his later manga being almost exclusively hentai. But then, seeing your passion project get diluted into THAT would do it anyone. (I fukkin love Drakuun tho, sure wish volume 1 wasnt 200 dollars)
If you have not read this book, you need to hit up your local comic book store to see if they have it, it's a great read, too bad that in this movie they left out the part about the German freedom fighter.
I loved Outlanders back in the day like; I would buy a blu ray of this so fast. Also since DH was mentioned I hope there's going to be an AMG/OMG video someday
I haven’t seen the OVA or read the manga, but I’m sure your video will have lots of interesting history to it, as they usually do. Outlanders is one of those things I’d see all the time in anime guides, on book shelves in used book stores/comic shops, or just flipping through old comics from Dark Horse. I always wondered what it was about and if it was any good.
As someone whose favorite anime is Rosario+Vampire, a franchise that is barely remembered in Japan but topped the NYT bestsellers list multiple times, I am no stranger to the "Germans Love David Hasselhoff" trope. Also because R+V is my favorite anime, I'll say that "being a bad adaptation" isn't necessarily a bad thing. If it were a 1:1 adaptation, no one would want to watch it, not to mention it gives an opportunity to make it better.
Apparently the author is aware at how big his foreign audience is, and requested that his new series Ghost Reaper Girl should read Right to Left for them.
I've come to associate Sean Schemmel so much with Goku hearing him say the lines he does in this OVA is hilarious. Also could be some good fodder for pretending he said outrageous stuff in Dragonball if you swap the audio.
You’ve done so many of the anime I watched during my teen years it’s amazing to go back and watch these retrospectives. Would it be too much trouble to see if you’d do one on Iria? 💕
I wish the manga creator didn't get so disenchanted and alienated from anime by the Outlanders OVA, because Caravan Kidd is one of my favorite manga and an anime series would have been pretty great.
I wonder whether this channel will eventually cover Maps by Yuichi Hasegawa. Since it has similar aesthetic and also being a space adventuring story that also have OVA. And seems to be mostly forgotten nowadays?
I think that's one of the most funny things about media about how something that can resonate more in one region than another. Especially anime. I think an obvious example is Saint Seiya and how it's incredibly popular in South America and Japan but was such a huge dud here in the states. It also has to do with timing as well. It's a real shame how the OVA misrepresented Manabe's work tho. (also Geobaldi is kinda hot ngl)
In middle school I once brought the 1st volume of the manga in class and my homeroom teacher flipped through it out of curiosity. 06:05 is the page he landed on. Kham holding a soldier's beheaded head. 😅
I agree with your ultimate conclusion; I've actually got a few writing projects underway myself, and lemme tell you, if any of my stories weren't faithfully adapted when made into a movie, I'd be *pissed* . That said, I *would* still like to watch Outlanders for the sake of experiencing an important chapter in the anime industrys history, along with seeing some horny bikini armor babe action; what can I say? I'm a simple man.
One of my favorite classic anime. I have the original Dark Horse Comics adaptation (and the collected trade paperback), the original video animation filmbook of the anime from Japan that was put out decades ago and the old DVD. So yeah, I'm a fan. :) But yeah, I totally understand the viewpoint of it feeling like the "Lum" series, the over sexualizing the characters and definitely plays out differently than the manga. Nonetheless, it's still a fun classic anime, with the exception of those dam frog minions.

Yeah this is oldtaku bait for sure. I remember this being one of the old dark horse specials that anime cons used to keep in the manga library. I’ll admit that the series made me feel like a more serious look at either those annoying aliens or iczer-1.
I've got the first three volumes of the manga and didn't even know there was an OVA (or forgot about it), and I have to say, there's not nearly that much nudity in what I've read of it, like maybe one scene per volume. It's very much Urusei Yatsura if you focused on a dark invasion story and eschewed Takahashi's sense of humor in favor of, I don't know, Masamune Shirow's or, more fittingly, Yuzo Takada's. Which is to say it has a serious story but slightly ridiculous characters. When I was in college, this was kind of my jam (well, one of my jams), things like Outlanders, Caravan Kidd, and 3x3 Eyes and Blue Seed. Never got around to finishing those series (and only watched the anime of Blue seed), but that was the sweet spot for me--something more adult than shonen but not porn (I didn't know what seinen was but had read several series that were seinen by then, but i knew what hentai was; i even once saw a bargain bin at Hastings that had both Totoro and Urotsukidoji, which kind of creeped me out, not gonna lie--i skipped the latter and bought the former for my young cousin) or constantly gory (too much gore loses its effectiveness pretty quick, and unless it's meant to be humorous (Evil Dead 2) or weirdly beautiful (Kill bill), a few select scenes of memorable violence stick in the mind better, in my opinion. Damn, I miss Studio Proteus. Please do a video on them and the late Toren Smith. Maybe a whole series on translators.
One thing I remember about Proteus and Dark Horse was their censorship and editing practices--they censored Gunsmith Cats pretty heavily, though not completely, and even Oh My Goddess skipped over most of a couple of early volumes (possibly to match better with the anime adaptation, which skipped through a similar chunk of chapters in a montage). Viz pulled the latter with Maison Ikkoku, which came out around the same time. There really needs to be a publisher to rescue these out of print manga. It's ridiculous how much some of the Dark Horse and Tokyo Pop series have gotten--just look at Manabe's series and Otomo's Domu.
Interesting retrospective. Kinda think your sound mixing needs some work though. Getting ear-blasted by that chip tune at the end was not so fun. ;P Had some issues at the opening also with the music over whelming the opening monologue too. Anyhoo, thanks for your hard work on these!
Huh? While Lensman wasn't great as an adaptation, Doc Smith was dead 20 years prior to the anime being made. There was no relationship there to damage.
I always thought something like Doraemon would be popular here if it was marketed to the right audience, one that might share some of the fundamental cultural values it embodies. Latinos probably would've really taken to it. It was very popular in Latin America.
This is an anime I've revisting a few times since it was originally released. I've always enjoyed it for what it was even though it's not great because of what you've coined is probably a favorite genre for me - violent titty fest. XD I might need to check out the manga considering what you've told us about it.
I had always assumed it was just a simple issue of them trying to jam an entire manga series story line into a single OVA runtime. Much like Akira, but without the extreme of luck of having the creator being in full control of both and knowing what to cut and what to keep. Personally I've been picking up issues of the dark horse comic and the collected volumes when I stumble across them in stores. They're fairly cheap since people don't really remember this series, so the demand seems to be low. Though the production run was also low, so price goes up the closer to the end of the series. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I was kinda confused why this hadn't been picked up as a full series. I had seen it as the serious/action version Urusei Yatsura, which was just a straight romance/soap opera type story. But if the creator felt like he got burned the first time around that's pretty much why. I wonder if the manga sales got impacted by the OVA as well? An aside he definitely recorded that voice cameo before production was very far along. Probably did some action scenes first to convince him what a good job they were going to do so he didn't think to ask to see the actual script.
I remember finding the collected volumes in my comic store many years ago. Volume 1 and 2 were done on some really inferior paper and the rest were nice (I later discovered that the first editions were on that awful paper that yellowed after probably 2 days). I read around the same time as Dominion (Tank Police), Ghost in the Shell and Adam Warren's Dirty Pair. I really like it and picked up the DVD when CPM put it out a few years later. The OVA is well animated crap, especially compared to the manga. I tried watching it again a few years ago and ended stopping it and just re-reading the manga, which I can still recommend. It's kind of sad that the creator decided to just do mostly 'Adult' work and not try his hand another space-opera or some other type of science fiction.
I think this was the first anime I rented and didn't finish. Got to agree with Manabe Johji on this, thought it was another hentai accidently left in front of the curtains.
Mangaka probably can't get away with ripping into the people who produce anime of their work any more. Too much money in the business so I guess they just keep their heads down these days, but it's not as if I scour the internet for interviews.
Sometimes I wonder if I like the look of 1980s anime because my mom had a 1985 Nissan Maxima and I liked the interior of it. It shared many features with the 300ZX Turbo / Z31 Fairlady. I suppose it was Tron, Knight Rider, and giant mecha.
@@KarmaSpaz12 Yea but he kind of glossed over it. *SPOILER* The freaking Earth is destroyed. Every single human being except the MC is DEAD lol. And multiple planets including the bad guys home world also get destroyed leaving the galaxy like 50% lighter lol
I feel bad for Manabe, and I don't blame him, you don't need constant violence, titties and sex in order to have a good story. Though the manga's ending (seeing this video makes me wanna snag that manga series and add it to my collection) sounds like a good, albeit bittersweet conclusion, you can tell the poor guy was clearly airing out his anger and frustrations in the same way Robert Crumb disowned and killed off Fritz the Cat in his comic after he saw and expressed his hatred for Bakshi's movie adaptation. I'm working on a book series myself (progress is slow though) with aspirations for it being an animated series as well and I'd be equally pissed off if a similar outcome occurred. I have a feeling that if this had been a TV show instead that was more faithful to the manga and its space opera themes, it would have easily gotten more popular and be just as popular and successful as, and no doubt compared to, say, Dragon Ball (very unavoidable comparison), Space Battleship Yamato, and the various Gundam series.
Muh man does not like Akogi? They show up in a lot more of Manabe's work. They're kinda his Ferengi. Big part of Caravan Kidd and bigger part of Drakuun.
It sucks that Outlanders got compared to Urusei Yatsura, but it didn't help that both Lum and Princess Kahm shared the same voice actress, Fumi Hirano

Speaking anime adaptations so bad that irreparably damaged the relationship with writer of the original source material, have you ever seen "LENSMAN?"
Yes and I liked it, choose another example
Huh? While Lensman wasn't great as an adaptation, Doc Smith was dead 20 years prior to the anime being made. There was no relationship there to damage.
@@mariuspoppFMDon't get me wrong, I liked it too.

XD
I might need to check out the manga considering what you've told us about it.
I was kinda confused why this hadn't been picked up as a full series.
Caravan Kidd by the same manga is cool too.
A few seconds into the footage, and I already had the immediate impression "So if Urusei Yatsura was written by a guy?"
I'm with The Lobb and you on those minions.
One of the many anime that needs a blu ray release.
I think this was the first anime I rented and didn't finish. Got to agree with Manabe Johji on this, thought it was another hentai accidently left in front of the curtains.
I'd like to see this re-issued one of these days.
I've only seen this once
I read the manga last year. It was a shocking dark series
You should make a new intro for the channel only featuring the frog people from this anime.
Interesting Anime.
Consider turning the volume down a notch on the bgm.
I enjoyed the movie
I saw this anime. It was like a violent version of Urusei Yatsura.
first anime I got from Blockbuster, then later find out Manabe did lots of hentai
I have the Caravan Kidd manga.
What’s the music in the intro?
It's been almost a year and the final part of the merry history of looney tunes didn't come put when will it be released?
Ive never seen the dub befor lol
Mangaka probably can't get away with ripping into the people who produce anime of their work any more. Too much money in the business so I guess they just keep their heads down these days, but it's not as if I scour the internet for interviews.
Sometimes I wonder if I like the look of 1980s anime because my mom had a 1985 Nissan Maxima and I liked the interior of it. It shared many features with the 300ZX Turbo / Z31 Fairlady. I suppose it was Tron, Knight Rider, and giant mecha.
You guys should read the manga... it goes HARD. The stakes get stupidly high... you have no idea lol
The ending did get spoiled for us though...
@@KarmaSpaz12 Yea but he kind of glossed over it.
*SPOILER*
The freaking Earth is destroyed.
I have a feeling that if this had been a TV show instead that was more faithful to the manga and its space opera themes, it would have easily gotten more popular and be just as popular and successful as, and no doubt compared to, say, Dragon Ball (very unavoidable comparison), Space Battleship Yamato, and the various Gundam series.
i comepletely agree with you
Muh man does not like Akogi? They show up in a lot more of Manabe's work. They're kinda his Ferengi. Big part of Caravan Kidd and bigger part of Drakuun.
I love the ova even if its not the best
Those lizard folk make the Ewoks more tolerable by comparison.
1:05, I'm dumber for having read this.
Can you pls do dokkoida later on pls?
