WOW! Ry that looks amazing, REALLY amazing. I’ve never thought of smoking mashed potatoes, but those looked great. Thank You for sharing this, I can’t wait to cook it. (John From California)
@@CookingWithRy so I did this tonight. Tagged you on instagram. I'm @slowcalbbq. Used this miso/sriracha sauce with the maple syrup. Amazing. Thanks for the inspiration!! Give me a follow on there if you will!!!! Thanks!!!
I know this is an older video, but I just came across it and wanted to thank you for it. I made this and my wife went absolutely nuts for it which is a really good thing for me! I've never done mashed potatoes on a grill before this either and now I'm wondering why. They are amazing. I'm really injoying your videos.
Tried this recipe for 4th of July cookout. WINNER!! Would definitely used wood chips next time to give the potatoes more flavor, but the recipe is great. THIS is what you cook, when company is coming for dinner! Prepare it the night before, and cook it up an hour before you eat.
Tried this recipe and cooking method two years ago, and this is the only salmon recipe we have used since. It’s really good and easy to follow. Sometimes, we just do the potatoes. Sweet potatoes also work well.
Just tried this with my family on my new Weber Performer and it was a huge hit! New to charcoal grilling but the instructions were clear and easy to follow. Thank you for sharing!
How can anyone give you a thumbs down on the best salmon you ever made? Looks great and so simple to make. Unfortunately my wife is not a salmon fan, but I’ll try this recipe.
I was the lucky person that got to enjoy some of the salmon. It honestly tasted like butter. I really liked the combination of that ghost chili with the brown sugar. Best salmon I’ve ever had.
I've been waiting for this cook from you for awhile. I've got a chuck roast smoked with pecan for 2 hours, and just transferred to a dutch oven with some coals in the fire pit. Salmon is my next excursion with your recipe! Good stuff!
I’ve been watching your videos for a while now ry! I must say I’ve learned so much from you, your an amazing teacher! My grilling/smoking skills have sky rocketed in the last several month. Lifetime fan of you and your videos
Wow Ry!! Thank his was one of the most amazing recipes I’ve ever tasted. You were on point with everything. The Smokey flavor from the cedar plank was perfect. We paired it up with rice pilaf and honey glazed baby carrots. Thank you for all your videos. So glad I made it. It was my first salmon on my ocean blue master touch (I noticed you had the same one.) AMAZING.
Beautiful looking cedar plank salmon Ry! I really like that glaze after curing them overnight. Nice idea to put the potatoes on the plank not only for presentation but some cedar flavor. Truly a fantastic cook. Hope you have a great weekend!
Great video as always sir! I have never tried salmon but after watching this I think I will have to give it a try. Love the idea of doing the potatoes on the cedar plank with the salmon. Awesome job!!!
Another great video. I've dry-brined salmon for years for smoking, but never done it when I cook it just for dinner. Looks delicious and I think leaving the dried brine on it for flavor is a good idea, especially with the sugar/salt ratio you used.
Wow Ry! Five star all the way my brother perfectly cooked Salmon and those Mashed Potatoes with the herb butter absolutely phenomenal. Have a wonderful week you and your family.
Whoa! I have GOT to try this. Running to Home Depot in the morning for some cedar. 🤣 So glad you did a fish video, Ry. Every single dish I’ve tried of yours has been fantastic, but I’m really a fish guy over any other meat, so I can’t wait to do this. Hope you do a few more fish videos in the future. Thanks for posting this!
Bro my mouth is literally watering right now. Using a cedar plank is the only way I grill fish. Just something about that aroma that really make a difference. Going to have to try the brine next time.
Looks amazing and by your expression it tastes damn good. Going to the store right now to pick up everything to make what I think is best grilled salmon recipe. That's for the video!! 😋
The timing of this video couldn't be more perfect. I picked up some salmon today (well, yesterday technically since it's 1am) that I'm planning on grilling today and have a cedar plank to use. On the weber kettle of course :) One thing I noticed you didn't mention though that I think might be helpful - how were your vents (both exhuast and intake) set, and what temp was the grill running (either shown via the built in thermometer or an external one). Love your videos, thanks!
I think salmon only needs a hint of sweetness, so I skipped the sweet rub. The glaze is perfect. I tried sweet potatoes instead of "regular" potatoes. A funny thing happened - the recipe I used was rather meh but after the smoking process it was an amazing transformation. I would have never thought of cooking mashed potatoes on a cedar plank. It's a winning idea.
Salmon looked great buddy. Salmon is my favorite fish. Loved the dry rub mixture and I've gotta get me some of that Ghost pepper sauce. Oh and the taters looked pretty darn savage too. Great cook buddy!🤘
Just came across this video and I am so excited to try it. One question if anyone can answer, if I have a propane bbq, what temp would you suggest for the bbq as I am relatively new to trying the cedar plank method for salmon?
@@CookingWithRy I just had to report back on this. I made this last night for the family (8 of us) and everyone LOVED it. The salmon was amazing and the mashed potatoes disappeared :) Thanks Ry.
Hey buddy awesome ! I'm gonna try it. Can I ask a stupid question? Never used cedar, can you reuse the plank a few times, or do you just use it once? Thanks for the great vedeo!
Definitely going to try this out. Looks really good!! Where did you have the vent holes on the grill set at? Am just curious as to how hot I need my Weber at. Or does it not really matter?
Excellent!! Thank you!! By the way….keep up the great work on these videos! I learned a lot from your other videos since I recently started learning how to do backyard barbecue. My ribs, chuck roasts, and briskets have turned out amazing!!
Hey Ry.... my new Weber kettle arrived and it's all assembled with the first cook out of the way. I now want to do the cedar plank salmon exactly to your recipe. How did you set the vents on your Weber kettle? Update: Nevermind... I saw on one of your comments you said you used a hot grill, vents wide open, and cooked the Planks on direct heat. You also mentioned in the video that you use 3/4 of a big chimney. I think I'm ready to go for tonight... The salmon is marinating, the glaze is made and the mashed potatoes are about to be mashed!
@@CookingWithRy The salmon and potatoes were out if this world! The cook was exactly the same as yours... 10 minutes with the lid on, then check the temperature. They almost matched your temps exactly, then five more minutes after the glaze and off they came at 135 to 140F. We purchased small cedar planks she found at Sprouts so we could only fit the salmon on them. I got creative and put the mashed potatoes in foil Bowls on the indirect side with the compound butter. They came out great... With a little bit of singeing on the edges of the potato with a great wonderful flavor. Thanks again for the recipe, the video tutorial, and the comments. Kudos my friend ...kudos!
Great video Ry. I plan on doing this this weekend. I have a question. One of my guests does not like salmon:-( what are your thoughts on doing a haddock the same way. Or should I spice it differently?

What temp range did you have the kettle running at for this cook?
No temp range since it was direct grilling with the planks. Just hot :)

I have good luck at our local Whole Foods 😊

Absolutely. Maybe a more delicate fish could get lost in that but salmon is a bit bolder 😊

Can you you use the planks more than once? Did you add wood chunks for extra smoke flavor? Sure did look good. I like salmon.
I only use them once and didn’t add any chunks since it cooks so quickly 😊
Really looked good, Ry. Curious if any smoke would have had an effect, also can you use the planks more than once? I've never tried cooking with them.
I only use them once, and the cooking time is so short that I'm not sure another smoke source would do much :)
3:44 Why didn't your brown sugar melt into a liquid?
In the rub a lot of it absorbs and contributes to the glaze when cooking.
Wow! Just Wow. Can't wait to try this. What temp did you run the Weber at? 300?
It’s such a short cook I just left both vents full open with 3/4 of a chimney of charcoal and didn’t worry about temp :)
Oh my goodness this dish looks awesome! Can I ask what kind of salmon did you use and was it wild or farmed raised?
I believe this was wild.
So do the planks just go right over the direct heat of the coals?
Yes right over them 😊
What was the cooking temperature?
Didn’t track it since it was direct grilling. Vents wide open.
@@CookingWithRy If I were to cook this in a camp chef woodwin pellet smoker, what temperature would you recommend?
I Only have a quesiton, When you say butter, is it madre from Milk or from pork? I ask that cause i might have seen two types of butter
It’s regular dairy butter from milk.

Not always. I often leave the skin, especially on red or Yukon Gold potatoes.
