Reed was an absolutely amazing editor, giving really actionable feedback in a recent piece of mine. Editing it to make it better was a breeze, thanks to his guidance. Thanks Reed!
I've been continuing to slowly make my way through your content while working on my writing on Medium. I'm currently on month 2 and am really trying to get advice just like this from people that have more experience than me. Love these interviews! As always, thanks so much for putting all of this content together for those of us getting started and trying to get better!
I really love your videos. It makes me feel prepared with what I must do and not in the future when I'm confident enough with my own writing. Thanks for all the tips and advise. :-)
Another informative video, Zulie. I've got an idea for a video I'd like to see you explore on your channel: A step-by-step guide on how to start a publication on Medium.
Great interview guys! Lots to unpack here. My one item I've been wondering and have yet to come across involves some of my older articles from when I first started out. Is there a negative look in deleting it and touching up a bit now that my writing has improved and resubmitting it to either the same or different publications? 🙏
Am really struggling for getting internal views like curation. I am trying hard though but still its of no use. I made my own publication called RUclipsTutuorials hopefully i can get people in there to get an email list some how.
It's a tough road to be honest. The biggest hurdle to overcome is that you can get instant success on Medium. I have been writing there for nearly two years and I still get stories that only get a handful of views. Getting paid for writing is incredibly rewarding, and for me personally, the struggle is worth it.
@@ZulieWrites Well i finally made my first cent my first penny on medium thanks to getting approved for illumination publication but how i find more publications like illumination cause they instantly approve help
Hey Zulie. I know you don't have your own publication?? But, what's your advice on growing a smaller publication. Quality over quantity or vise versa. I don't want to ruin my pub. standards by letting in lower quality work, but at the same time, I feel this is what big pubs like illumination are doing and it seems to be working for them. Please advice.
Everyone is mentioning to send them in beforehand, but I've used both strategies. I'm sent them in and waited for responses, I've also published myself and had publications reach out to ask for them to be added into their publication
I am in doubt of whether you can ask one publisher, get rejected and then try another publisher? And is it okay to publish on your own Medium site, or should you not do that if you want a publisher to publish your content? I get you cannot post it on your website or some other sites, but I am not sure if so can post it on my own personal medium site
1. You can definitely shop your piece around! For example, I often pitch stories to Forge that get rejected, so I will then try Mind Cafe, and if they don't get in there, then I self-publish. 2. You can definitely cross-post any content you own onto Medium from your blog. Many publications prefer Medium-only content, but definitely speak to the editors to see what would work for them.
Many pubs have a submission form where they ask new writers to submit a Medium draft link before adding you as a writer - once you've been added, you can submit stories freely!
Thanks for the kind words! It's different for every publication. But I would recommend reading the submission guidelines thoroughly and reading a few published articles in the publication to see if you can find patterns in the style and formatting. I hope that helps!
Amazing Interview, I found a lot of great tips for myself. I have applied to Mind Cafe before, but wasn't accepted. Zulie, how can you see the exact followers number? I just got 1.1k, but how can I see 1145 f.e.?
I have a question if I want to add an image on my Medium article (My Screenshot of Trading app from my own Gallery), Do I need to add image description due to Copyright? Thank you..
hi! can i be curated without being part of the medium partner program? and if one of my articles earns +1,000 views but i'm not part of the program, can i collect the money after?
Hi Zulie, love your channel; great videos and lots of information - thanks. Just a quick question about pen names. I signed up today to Medium and took the $5 per month subscription. I did this to be able to get a feel for the platform and to read as many articles as I can before I submit my first story. I signed up using my real name but, like you, I will write under a pen name. How, and at what stage do I change to a pen name? Do I go into my profile now and change the name or do I have to create another profile when I submit my first story? Thanks.
You can change your name in the profile editor. After I had been a member for a few days I noticed they had assigned by email address up to the @ as a default which I didn't want so had to change it.
Sadly not! Medium has a pretty strict no-duplicate-content policy, so if you want to publish the same story, you have to be sure you've done enough edits to make it distinct! Here's my video on the subject: ruclips.net/video/yOuejv-noTM/видео.html
@@ZulieWrites thanks for your reply. I thought when my piece is rejected, it is still not public (still in my closet). So, i think we still can publish to other publications for another try or just self-submit?
Yes absolutely! That's one of the greatest things about Medium. Though there is benefit to publishing in publications, you have the right to publish anything you want on your own profile
I've noticed that the response to clap ratio on most stories is very low. Responses are also listed under the "published" tab. In your experience, do responses need to be curated well in order to avoid "curation jail" as well, or does this community not generally have many active discussions?
I'm not sure but I don't think it's a problem. People don't generally do the "yeah, woah, great post dude" thing on Medium so a clap is the equivalent. Responses are generally used for deeper more involved comments.
@@ZulieWrites I read somewhere in Google or in Quora that one account only post maximum of 3 stories after that you get a message of " you reached the maximum limit to post on one day "
@@themfalam I don't think anybody could realistically write more than 3 good quality articles in a day. Anymore would just be bashing out low quality stuff which is pointless and actually damaging to your reputation
Hii Zulie, I wonder. Can I still get curation-jail when my story gets added to a publication? From what I understood, getting added to a publication doesn't necessarily mean you'll get curated.
It doesn't. I've been taking all the advice I can from Zulie's videos and I think I still ended up in "curation jail" unfortunately. Wrote 3 very in-depth articles and all 3 were "not curated". It's disappointing when I did all the work, took all the advice, minded all the rules, got into publications, and still didn't get curated. Womp. Starting to feel like it's pure luck and that's just something I've never had, haha.
Quick question about curation. How long does it take currently for a story to get curated? I've been writing for over 10 days and none of my stories have been reviewed. I've written 6 stories but I'm afraid to write more as I might not get curated in any of them and go to curation jail. Pls advise
It can take up to 2 weeks! I believe that once you become an "established/trusted" writer, that is, once you prove to the curators that you know what to do and how to write for them, you get looked at faster.
Apparently they allow affiliate links so you could try to write content relevant to products your an affiliate for. Not sure how successful it would be as it seems to contradict the site's culture to use it for what is in effect just advertising.
Ten thousand followers? You hit 10K followers three years ago? My Medium follower count has doubled to four and a half. I have no idea who the quarter follower was to start with. Maybe a very short writer with low self-esteem.
I wrote 2 articles in around 15 days after doing all the research work, trying to meet with the publication's and medium own standards but still waiting for acceptance and its 15 days and listened nothing...
If it's been 15 days, then it's probably safe to assume they won't accept it! you can rework it and try again, or try a new publication, or simply self-publish!
