    He always took risk and I respected that...He was a McDonald's All America and decided to go to Stanford. I remember Dick Vitale mentioned during the McDonald's game that Josh was basically crazy for going to Stanford over other top schools. Now Josh using that Stanford education and transforming parts of California as a real estate developer.

    Josh Childress was one of the first NBA players I've seen willingly leave the league to go play overseas at such a young age. It's commonplace now but as a 15 year old at the time I couldn't understand it but I respected his decision to do what was best for him.

    • @ohsosaucy1093
      @ohsosaucy1093 19 дней назад +1

      @@TTJJCC I understand your point, but I'd argue that there's no such thing as a truly 'secure spot' in the NBA unless you have a max deal. Even then, teams can still make changes. With that in mind, I think it's more common than you think for players to consider overseas options, especially if they're not getting the playing time or opportunities they want in the NBA.

    • @TTJJCC
      @TTJJCC 18 дней назад

      @@ohsosaucy1093 I see what you're saying. By a "secure spot," I mean someone that has a multi year contract and a spot in the rotation. Now, a fringe player on a one year small money deal? Those players are more likely to consider overseas deals.

    A great player and great character, Childress is remembered fondly by Olympiacos fans. His main drawback was the inconsistent three point shot, and he was criticized for it, even in Europe. He had spectacular athleticism, a great defender that could guard almost all positions, and overall contributed in many aspects of the game.

    Yeah, everyone was puzzled about the move on the time, but it was undoubtedly the right move. It's the equivalent of over $45 million USD. Josh wasn't gonna be getting $15 mil a year in the league back then...especially when the rookie max was only around that figure (considering the taxes).
    He also had an NBA out after each year, so if the market/league wanted him to come back, he could go back.
    Hawks offered him 5 years for 33 million (basically 16 million post taxes). Olympiacos basically gave him 3 years for 45 million if you factor in taxes. I actually remember the contract dispute from that summer.

    • @Ninety2boss
      @Ninety2boss 22 дня назад +1

      Olympics gave him 3-20. Not 45. I would have taken the hawks deal. You get your pension and you get to stay at home.

    • @rbballfan
      @rbballfan 22 дня назад +5

      @@Ninety2boss You're missing what I'm saying. 3 years 20 overseas is 3 years 20 cash take home pay.
      In NBA, at 52.6 percent tax rate (once you hit THAT HIGH OF tax bracket).... in order to actually take home 20 million cash, you have to make around 45 million.

    • @Ninety2boss

    • @rbballfan
      @rbballfan 22 дня назад +5

      @@Ninety2boss Oh I feel you. The max pension in NBA is after 10 years of service. Josh has 8 years of service. He's two years short of the max pension (which is $215k a year...which is then taxed). He's probably getting 160k or so with 8 years of service (which can't be taken out til 62 years old or so anyways.)
      The balance of those two years he played in Greece wouldn't make up for 20 million in liquid cash IN HAND that one can invest, accrue interested on, or do whatever you want with. The 20 million cash he received is going to go much farther than 45-50k extra annually once you hit 62.
      Trust me, my brother works in the NBA, so I know all about the pension system.

    Dominique Wilkins was past his prime when he went to Europe, but he was just one season removed from a 29ppg season, and had a couple of 19ppg seasons where he was a 6th man of the year contender. Even at that advanced age and with injuries, he offered teams more than Childress ever did. It was pretty notable, a decade before Childress.
