my childhood zelda was ocarina of time, so those redeads traumatized me. that said, i still avoided the redeads as much as the game would allow me, and kill them from afar.

ReDeads and Gibdos are the only enemy in Zelda you have to think around to beat. For kids, it's an absolute nightmare encountering a being which attacks you by making you feel absolutely helpless. That's what makes them so scary imo. I feared those things back in OoT and WW. By the time i finally played TP i was to old and found them rather cool looking. (Which i think about them all at this point) But as a kid... Yikes. Especially in Wind Waker, my first ever Zelda game. No chance of dealing with them with arrows. Hookshot doesn't stun them and is a Bad idea, boomerang does also nothing. I was so scared of them and didn't want to run up to them, I dealt with them by using bombs.
I remember when this guy called necroscope86 played OOT for the first time, and when he got killed by one he literally said "What the hell, what you doing to me, you weirdo! Get off...! *game over* What the funk was that zombie doing to me, that is NOT how a zombie attacks. That looked really sexual, in a really weird way. I'm getting away from you, you weird pervert zombie."
I've always hated and feared ReDeads... I still do... There's just something about them, and the theories behind them. They are also one of my favorite enemies at the same time.
I think what makes Zelda zombies so scary is that they seem to be supernatural based instead of virus based. They look decayed to the point where they are ancient. Yet they can still move. And SCREAM.
Paralyzed in a sand trap... not a good way to go. And I still vividly remember the first time I ever fought them in WW. Instead of the Earth Temple like I should have done, it was at the private oasis cabana in the sewers, the WORST HUMANLY POSSIBLE WAY to run into them I might add.
Same. I actually wanted to check the comments to see if anyone else had the same experience. I thought that there just...weren't Redeads in this game. I never got to the Earth Temple or anything. Just exploring the basement of the Private Oasis, and I jump down a hole with no ladder. BAM! Redead! And despite the art style, freakier than ever! I was genuinely terrified!
A couple nights ago i was outside smoking a cigar, just threw the trash out and it finally wasn't still too hot out anymore so i decided this was ok. Now where i live is the country, real quiet neighborhood with the occasional car with loud music passing by. As i was enjoying the night skies listening to the crickets chirp and the other country noises, i heard a scream. I stood up and looked around and thought to myself "wtf" is someone in trouble? Stopped and listened to see if i hear it again but i didn't. I played the scream back in my mind and realized i know that scream from somewhere. I started looking up screams from video games because i am an avid gamer always have been. I came across the redead scream from loz oot and that's what i heard i kid you not.. Same scream maybe a bit more realistic and the exact same echo.. 💀
The Triforce Herores Redeads were actually a lot of fun to battle, you just needed trustworthy friends to help you when you got caught. Oot definetly scared me the most tho
Redeads are usually associated with dark secluded places heavily associated with the dead. We didn't really encounter any areas fit for a redead in botw outside of hyrule castle and maybe the thyphlo ruins or the lost woods. Botw 2 looks like it'll have more of these areas so it's a possibility, but I get the feeling they may still not show up as it might be difficult to make them work in an open world setting.

I’ll still say wind waker’s versions are more creepy. The fact that even if you aren’t in range of them screaming at you, hitting them with an arrow and making them look at you with those empty eyes is just.. plus thinking about what they’d look like without the cartoonish style.
