Not just to be a sexy Hollywood starlet! At that time if a woman wanted a job as a secretary, nurse, teacher, etc. she was asked if she planned to get married. If she was married she would be questioned closely about plans for pregnancy. It was legal and just fine to fire a woman because she became pregnant. So, I have no trouble believing that the studio would demand that these young women whose careers were based on looks and sex appeal be single.

Never in any of those comments did anyone say that she had to have kids. She wanted kids and she tried to and she wasn’t able to. And if people decide to give birth to children you have no right to call them selfish. They don’t have to adopt. I would love to adopt when I’m older and it’s a thing I want to do, but I’m not gonna tell someone that they’re selfish because they don’t want to adopt. Adopting is not a thing for everyone.

It was better for the public to fall in love with single stars, from Hollywood's point of view. It's harder to daydream about a married one. Well, that was the thinking back then anyway. Even men were sometimes put in this predicament. Later on, even in the 70s and 80s, actors and musicians were told to keep girlfriends and marriages quiet, so they could continue to be the screen idol of teeny boppers and rake the money in for the studios or record companies.

Oh for the love of god folks, a baby cannot "change" a person's life in the way you're suggesting. Have a kid and everything will sprout roses and fairy dust, eh? You have so little understanding of the human mind and psychological suffering. If you have had a life like Norma Jean had, living in foster homes, being abandoned by her father, then her mother being mentally ill, you wouldn't say such a shallow thing. The poor woman grew up without roots, stability and parental love. You don't change all that loss, sorrow and abandonment and the ensuing difficulties with a god damned BABY! How fucking simple can you be? Plus, she had ambitions to become a model and an actress, so obviously motherhood to her was not an immediate priority at the time. She had goals and dreams that didn't include being a breeder. And good for her. Not every woman on this planet WANTS to be a mother. The fact is, it's a choice!!!

Awww 3:20. I always knew Norma Jean so badly wanted a child but never knew she wanted one with James. Also, the way she said “I want a piece of you” when he was going to the service makes you realize she did indeed love James deeply. If she had a child with James, I don’t think we would’ve had Marilyn Monroe. Ultimately this would’ve been much better for her as well. Too bad, she didn’t have a child with James and she was perennially affected by depression which makes a person easily get bored and not feel content. That’s why she left her first husband to become the star we know and love today.

Alot of people believe the strasbergs used Marilyn and even their daughter Susan who was a big star on Broadway at the time. There is a great Vanity Fair article from 2003 which chronicles all that happened in the 50's when Marilyn attended classes at the actors studio.

The level of maturity of a child from years back, like the 30's, 40's, even the 50's was much different than todays. Children were treated different back then, and were made to be self-reliant and independent, a lot of responsibility was laid on them from a very young age. A twenty year old person back then was already acting/behaving/thinking as a fully mature adult. Todays' 20 year old are incredibly immature and childish, even at 25 still are.

There is an interesting aspect to the life of dear Marilyn, one that speaks to the psychology of women, being raised poor, and the absence of a parents love. Her first marriage by all accounts seemed to offer a life of contentment, and she fit well there, but this need, this desire to be more, achieve more is understandable. When someone says your beauty is exceptional, one rightfully, and humbly says, that’s great but what am I to do with it?!, For Marilyn this revelation began to be seen as a financial reward, beauty = money, security. But soon, the little foster child within her needed something more, and so she began to push the limits of this captivating thing called beauty, and sex appeal. Movies were a step up, to modeling, and a much more substantial way to affirm her identity, she would use what she could to open the doors to Hollywood, but would soon seek to attain something more tangible, from the beauty that brought her there. In the interim, Marilyn married, for love I suppose, but also to give her a sense of who she was, it was nice for loads of men to want her, desire to be with her, but the process, the experience of marriage itself, was hard. Mainly because men have egos, and even though we desire beautiful women, want beauty in our woman, too much adoration from other men, makes us long for someone who didn’t come with so much attention of other men, add to that Marilyn loved the attention. Through it she could affirm who she was, and erase the stigma of a little girl no one really wanted.
Movies, much like marriages, were something Marilyn needed more from. She didn’t like the dumb blonde sex pot label, she didn’t like the coveted prize, kept on the shelf, that men sought from her when she married them. Eventually this desire and the failings that came with it, from Hollywood, from Marriage depressed her, why couldn’t things fall in place perfectly!?, she wandered. Sex is always a good outlet for stress, and Marilyn used it. The sex with powerful men helped affirm some things for her, because, they wanted her. So she obliged. Unfortunately in this quest to find herself, affirm that she belonged, and the added scrutiny of the press, the Woman, who’d just wanted a foundation to establish who she was, lost herself, and lost control. In the end, the bargain between the real consequences of just one more sleeping pill, and the harmlessness of pretending not to know you’d had to many, was won by the latter. Our dear Marilyn was gone. In the end her story is a story about parenting. All the admiration and fame the world can muster, will never replace the love of a parent. So parents hug your children, love them. It means everything!

When her husband came back she had known that what made her happy was to be independent and to work. She no longer wanted to be settled down to being a house wife, as it was the custom. She then started to model and changed her appearance, so she also divorced because she felt she had to leave her old life to start a new one. I read also that this first husband was very jealous of her independence.

He tells about her faith and how she loved children, and how they opened an orphanage overseas... So, if she married this guy at 16...in 1942...wondering when the first marriage was?? PatrickLHawkins well I read in Marilyn Monroes geography that she did indeed live in a orphanage once. It was because of Graces husband was sextually harassing Marilyn and Grace didnt like that and wanted Marilyn out of the house. And after grace took Marilyn back home she made sure Marilyn was sleeping in the same room as their daughter so that the husband would not harass her again. However the family had to move and Grace didnt want to bring Marilyn. And she could not find any family who would take her so she came up with and idea of marrying her off since she was off age. It was either marriage or back to the orphanage. (sorry bad English).

She should of stayed with him. I believe she thought she wasn’t enough. It breaks my heart to hear she felt she had to give the world something. The world took her childhood from her. I think she was mentally traumatized & had no business being in showbiz. Furthermore it’s sad that the world makes women feel like being a wife and mother isn’t enough. It is ladies and I wish someone would of told Marilyn that.

How can she say her life would have been worse? Mate, she died from a drug over dose and clearly was struggling. What a thing to say.

So she had aged out of the foster system and didn't have anywhere to go, so they married her off to this man.

Fatima Jones He wasnt just a guy off the street, they dated for 6 months before they married. Good grief Lana Turner and Artie Shaw married the same night. Ok, it didnt last but then neither did any of her 7 other marriages. They might’ve been the happiest six months of her life if her husband hadn’t of had to go to war. I think Marilyn would’ve given up anything to be a wife and mother. And she would’ve been a lot happier as a mum than a plastic plaything tossed around men who just wanted her body.. And then killed her off after she’d outlived her usefulness and scandal happened. Look what happened to Princess Diana. If Prince Charles had been normal she’d still be alive today.

It wasn't as though they weren't dating. Her foster parents weren't allowed to take her with them out if state. In those days, you married. He seems quit nice. They obviously wanted a nice family for her.

@@TheTibmeister Don't call Marilyn Monroe a "plastic plaything.". None of use are perfect.

It’s sad to me how many of these comments are bashing Marilyn Monroe (because she struggled with Mental Health, essentially). Y’all are wicked. RIP sweet girl
