I love the harmonies in the original, but the Spanish language and guitar, and the way he sings it with such yearning, totally changes the context and transforms this song into the story of a man who's missing his people, his culture, his old neighborhood, his home. You feel the love for the city and the homesickness and a sense of displacement in a way that the original, as beautiful as it is, just can't convey.

I had this 45 when I was a kid, the flip side was Light my fire. Both in my opinion were better than the originals. They both had a feel that transcended studio music to a more soulful rendition that touched the soul and attained what the songwriter was intending to convey.

He blew that impressionable "kid" away!!!! This version of one of my favorite songs of all time, blows this 67 yo man away. Much respect for his great guitar playing, and soulful voice. Very few can take a great song and make it their own. This version is amazing. I would not say it is better than the original but it takes the song to a different level. A different dimension.
This song has a lot of meaning to it to me, my brother left from jersey to live in La and he always daydreamed of living in Californiavtil it came true in very late 70s and built his whole family and liveed there until he died at 66 in 2019 , and I cry cause he made that dream come true and thats all he ever wanted to build a family in California and live out his life there with no regrets and I cry every time I hear it now , cause hes not here anymore and he was my best friend in life and I miss him so, what a good brother hes been to me!!
My dad had the album and I pulled it out to listen to Light My Fire in 1995 and I ended up playing this song first out of curiosity to hear Jose’s version and I haven’t ever been able to get it out of my mind since that time. It’s got so much emotion in it compared to the Mamma’s and Poppa’s. It really can bring tears to your soul!

It's around April of 97 and I am cruising North on Route 41 back home in Chicago, Lake Shore Drive to be exact and I am riding with a lady who was special in everyway. We were both in our late 20's, finished college, she was a school teacher, had some cool dreads and was down to Earth. When this came on the cd I had burned (what a time) we got silent and enjoyed the ride and the journey of the song. Time marched on, we lost contact, I forgot her name but remember one aspect of her, I wish I knew where she was but this song at least is a great memory of her and the time.
On this same album is a cover version of " The Doors" , " Light My Fire" which which was a massive international hit for Feliciano in 1968 and brought attention to the album here, winning multiple Grammy awards.
Very underrated progressive pop psych tune of mid 1968. Jose kicks ass with "Light My Fire" and "California Dreamin." 1968 a yr. that will always stick to my mind with so many events with gutsy issues!

This song, in Feliciano's version, captures alone the essence of the film. Feliciano played this song by tearing the beat away, exposing the anguish it really expresses. The protagonist of the song would like to escape from his world for a better place, but while he sings he (or she) himself knows that this will never happen: his dreams will remain unfulfilled. And just like the protagonist of the song, the dreams of all the characters in the film, in reality, will also be shattered. The title "once upon a time ..." says it all: this is represented as a beautiful story of friendship and redemption, but it is a fairy tale, the desire for something better that will never happen. A dream. Sharon Tate, her baby, her dreams and her friends won't get through the night. Their killers will end up killed or locked up for the rest of their life in prison. Rick, or whoever he represents, will never meet Polanski and his career will end in oblivion, and Cliff will follow him. Maybe only friendship can survive this. Maybe.
You worded it perfectly. And the ending of the film captures this as well, when Rick meets Sharon and her friends, and you remember that in reality, they all died. Which is why, despite the fact the film has a happy ending, it's very sombre in tone, because like you said, it represents what everyone wanted to actually happen, a fantasy. A fantasy that can never be.
Jose just love him he owns that song.But I remember all of that. The movie really touch me I lived in L.A. and grew up in the 60's as kid we moved in 1970 the memories. Good 🎥 movie.
I saw Jose live at Gisler School, in Huntington Beach, CA, back about '71/'72, when I was in 6th grade. Had no idea who he was when he stepped onstage w/ someone's help to find his chair. Once he started playing, every eye and ear was tuned into him and his guitar. I remember thinking I'd like to play the guitar and sing like this guy, however, the guitar wasn't having any of my fantasies and I soon found my instrument in the trumpet. I've since learned the keyboards/piano, flute and harmonica, but the guitar still gives me grief. lol

It’s sad people hate on this guy’s performances in his later life. He had a beautiful voice when he was younger. It wasn’t as good when he got old but that’s just a natural part of aging. There aren’t many artists whose voices don’t get worse in their elder years. He deserves more respect.

My dad had the album and I pulled it out to listen to Light My Fire in 1995 and I ended up playing this song first out of curiosity to hear Jose’s version and I haven’t ever been able to get it out of my mind since that time. It’s got so much emotion in it compared to the Mamma’s and Poppa’s. It really can bring tears to your soul!

It's around April of 97 and I am cruising North on Route 41 back home in Chicago, Lake Shore Drive to be exact and I am riding with a lady who was special in everyway. We were both in our late 20's, finished college, she was a school teacher, had some cool dreads and was down to Earth. When this came on the cd I had burned (what a time) we got silent and enjoyed the ride and the journey of the song. Time marched on, we lost contact, I forgot her name but remember one aspect of her, I wish I knew where she was but this song at least is a great memory of her and the time.

Very underrated progressive pop psych tune of mid 1968. Jose kicks ass with "Light My Fire" and "California Dreamin." 1968 a yr. that will always stick to my mind with so many events with gutsy issues!
My favorite song of the sixties. When they played it in that Hollywood movie I was so glad this was finally gonna get the attention it so deserves. Stone classic.

You worded it perfectly. And the ending of the film captures this as well, when Rick meets Sharon and her friends, and you remember that in reality, they all died. Which is why, despite the fact the film has a happy ending, it's very sombre in tone, because like you said, it represents what everyone wanted to actually happen, a fantasy. A fantasy that can never be.

I saw Jose live at Gisler School, in Huntington Beach, CA, back about '71/'72, when I was in 6th grade. Had no idea who he was when he stepped onstage w/ someone's help to find his chair. Once he started playing, every eye and ear was tuned into him and his guitar. I remember thinking I'd like to play the guitar and sing like this guy, however, the guitar wasn't having any of my fantasies and I soon found my instrument in the trumpet. I've since learned the keyboards/piano, flute and harmonica, but the guitar still gives me grief. lol

It’s sad people hate on this guy’s performances in his later life. He had a beautiful voice when he was younger. It wasn’t as good when he got old but that’s just a natural part of aging. There aren’t many artists whose voices don’t get worse in their elder years. He deserves more respect.
What's the matter with his voice? I saw him perform a few years ago. His voice was as strong as ever. This must be recent.
