I can really connect with your tip regarding "The story needs to be the most important part of your story" I filmed ultrarunners over a 2 day event with a Nikon Z7 and a rode shotgun mic as that is all I had. I was truly overwhelmed that over 65k views later on my 50 minute documentary gained so much traction as many people said it was the story that made them watch until the end. So appreciative of your insights and encouragement to so many.
That last point is timely for me. I'm in the middle of shooting a short doc and have been stuck on the cinematic stuff when there's still story to be shot. Thanks for the tip!
Hey,just wanted to ask cause I got confused, what is the difference between Documentary Foundations and advanced documentary, cause looked at what I will learn there and both of them have pretty similar things, so if you can I would really appreciate it if you can tell me in detail about each one, like do I learn how to script a documentary in foundation while in advanced I don't. Also, I saw that the advanced one had bi weekly calls, do I not get that in the foundation one? Thanks in advance, I just started film school in israel but I want to also really learn how to physically make complicated films, we only start to really make stuff in the second year, right now I only learn stupid theories and history@@markbone
"As above, so below." Very helpful advice. At my extremely amateur level, the same principles apply. I'm 82, use an iPhone 16 Pro for short music performances. Small? Check. Unobtrusive? Check. Audio? Check. ProRes Log HLG? Check. My main gig is writing, and video has to be a smooth workflow with reasonable compromises.
I have 4 real passions in my life, videography, photography, coffee and bodybuilding. You can't even imagine how much it means to me to see these worls collide and having masters like you to take the time and make videos like this about the things I love. I've been lucky enough to turn 3 of these 4 things into business in my life. It's even more fun to see what amazing people like you come up with in these spaces. Keep it up!
I really appreciate the knowledge and time you all take to help creators get better. No ones has asked you but you do so anyway. That is really respectable
Mark, it was your Channel that gave me the courage to go out and just start filming. I’ve done 2 Docs so far and currently working on others. Your tips are short but sweet and hit the mark. Thanks for putting out this content 🙏🏽 it’s been incredibly helpful.
A lot of value here! I end up on a lot of Doco shoots where Im either by myself or with a pretty skeleton crew and the further on I get in my career the more I realise how common this is - even on what would look like fairly high end projects from an outside perspective. Loved watching this - and looks like your projects gonna come up super nice
Great choice on the FX3 and FX6 combo for the Cbum doc. You hit the nail on the head with the intimacy thought - having an oversized camera like the ARRI can take away from it. I found myself using this technique that you taught me when you have less gear it makes the shoot flow smoothly instead of focusing on how much gear you brought. 1 camera, 2 lens, Shotgun mic is good enough.
Thanks Mark, have an AOD package, finished a documentary, couldn't agree more on keep the cinematic stuff for the last, earn that with your characters, and we filmed for more than 6 years. We had the luck to get a cinema release, art house cinemas, and getting several broadcasters on board. In Kenya to film a short on 16mm.
Amazing tactic! Cover a story that nobody is talking about. Gosh Mark, you and Mike have provided such practical knowledge through AOD. Thank you!!! This was a great video.
Love this. The best documentary footage I've ever shot was when I was just by myself or with one other person (wife/audio lady/director combo usually), so I hear that. In the last decade, a lot of money has been thrown at docs, but at the detriment of the craft itself - now all we have is highly-produced, great looking but soulless, stilted nonsense. People playing big-crew filmmakers, when they need to be focus on capturing REAL moments IN-SCENE. Sounds like that's the route you went and I'm glad you did - can't wait to see those intimate/raw/REAL moments. Also, the C70 > FX6 all day, e'er day.
I'm so stoked for this doc Mark! Long time follower of yours and most of my work is with bodybuilders (including some of Chris' top competitors). I can't wait to see what you and the team have captured and I'm loving picking these tips up along the way.
I got brought back for a second season of a show. Im pretty excited. I think I did some good work last season, but Im really hoping to up my game this season.
This is a truly inspiring journey, Mark. Thank you for sharing those awesome tips and learnings. What camera would you recommend for a filmmaker who's just starting out?
Mark you had me until you said you love Florida. They can keep their humidity LOL So many good bits of information in here, you always deliver the best stuff. Thank you!
can't wait to see what Fuji will release with the GFX. It looks that they'll get it to FX6 segment. It will be more expensive. But may be more qualitative ? :) It already has more dynamic range.
this is the universe crossover I didn't expect. I've been following Cbum before he started competing. I just followed your channel a few months ago because I recently got into filmaking/videography. So you DID the cbum documentary???
Hey Mark, amazing video. So happy to see more of the progress on this doc! Is there a best way to get in touch with you about collaborating/offering services? I was in the town over from you when you were filming in FL and I was hoping to get in touch while you were in town to see if you needed audio or BTS filming but couldn't get in touch. Thanks!

Hey Mark! Foundations is geared towards those who haven’t released a short documentary (or at least one they aren’t proud of) and advanced is designed to help you go deeper and find your voice as a director. The bi-weekly calls in advanced allow you to get feedback on your projects also

@ I know. I just bought the sennheiser MKE 600 and Sony Top mount XLR and I’ve been loving it for all the small documentaries I’ve been doing. Can’t wait to join the AOD Family soon.
4 Channels of Audio is so clutch, I've been using it on the C300 and C70 for years. I LOVE hooking up a stereo mic for atmos and landscape work. Recording stereo audio for exterior landscapes with the rode videomic x direct into a 3.5mm jack or via dual xlr just sounds insanely great to the ears for atmos coverage.

Yeah man. You gotta earn the cinematic stuff with your subjects

Its always great to hear from a person who practices something. Thank you Mark for this video.
Thank you!
Mark, Thank you for your videos, which are always a source of motivation and inspiration.

Thanks for the nugget about when filming sucks. I needed that.

Woah! 16mm. Love it brother. Best of luck with that, crush it
This is like the coolest thing i've ever seen. Cannot wait to see the final product, just the shots in this video are absolutely beautiful

so glad this helped!

Always sharing gems! I'm not a proper doco guy, but this resonated with me even as a YT creator/video person in general.
Thanks Mark!
Glad it could help in anyway Chris!
Sharing, from the UK.
From 25 miles north of London, be lucky stay safe.

Looks awesome. When and where can the doc be seen?
Late 2025. Hopefully on a major streamer ;)
What! I’m from Port St Lucie, man I missed you lol, been watching your channel for years.
I was on incognito mode
Is this the Chris Williamson doc? Or are you working on two things I'm excited to watch?
this is the documentary that includes Chris Williamson
@@markbone looking forward to it!
Hey Mark, are you gonna be releasing a new module in AOD after the cinematic eye anytime soon?
Yeas!! We are developing a new one now!
love your work brother ...
Much appreciated
Awesome! Always great info and love it. Fyi the downloaded link does not work after you've added the information.
It’s working for us! email info@aodfilm.com if it’s still not working

I've been practicing my audio mark and I hate audio lol. Buying the Deity Theos soon.
there's a reason there's a whole sound department on set. it aint easy!

Bro life is weird. I procrastinated joining AOD just to find out that Mark was hiring members for a legendary documentary in my own backyard....
Did NOT expect to click on this video and hear my no name little home town announced in the first ten seconds lol
Bahahahahaha
Solid!
Where can I watch the doc?
It hasn’t been released yet
👏👏👏

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have a Question....can we have the full 55 days uncut BTS with comments? I want to go full "lord of the rings nerd talk" with this doc.
Haha. Are you in AOD? You’ll see a lot of it there
@markbone sadly I'm not. But from the trailers I just watched on the AOD side, it's actually awesome!
The fact my hero was filming so close to me hurts a little bit lol
