It sounds like a really good quality "Demo Tape" to my ears, I played in several underground bands here in the American Mid-West starting in the late 80's through the whole of 90's and there were some surprisingly high quality " Cassette Demo's " being made in garages, basements and spare bedrooms back then.. It's very possible that an aspiring artist/local band from somewhere in Japan paid a local Indy Studio to record this song and for whatever reason they just never made it to the big leagues..
One thing's for sure, this song is Really Cool!!..

The guitar tone alone makes me think this is a demo. Otherwise the synths and drum machines used are indistinguishable from a lot of popular music from the time.

    • @frethand101
      @frethand101 3 года назад +12

@@jsan2548 Yeah, the more I listen to it the more I'm guessing it's a 4-track cassette.. The drums and synths sound like they were bounced to one track which would free up 3 tracks for rhythm, lead and the vocal.. I also think the reason everybody's saying that "it's spooky" is due to that good old fashioned wobble-n-squeaky sound that old cassettes produce which gives the audio an almost "haunting sound"..

If it is demo tape it must've been handled by a true professional the mixing and mastering are VERY good.
On top of that i highly doubt its an indie band since there is way too many instruments for an indie band to handle.
And i notice her singing going out of tune few times in the song (might be for expressive purposes).
But I don't know considering how heavily Japan invested to idol market back then (and even today) It seems like an demo tape for an idol.

im a musician, not pro, but i think i can say this
the cursed vibe comes mainly from the feeling that you cant feel stable
the chords in there are the ones you least expect, and you cant get a grip on a pleasant pattern
    ex. 0:19
there are strange key changes 1:36, and its also adds to the unpleasant vibe
the slowly establishing pattern suddenly cuts and goes back to the unpleasant zone
ex 0:52, despite the creepy melody, there was a pattern, but it cuts when you least expect it
the melody when it says “sayonara” 1:36 and following is slightly out of pitch
the violin(?) sounds stiff, so it adds to the atmosphere
im pretty sure this vibe was intentional, lets also think of the creators perspective
this is very much unsettling sounding, no way any person would tolerate making a song like that unless it was intentional

As a total music theory layman, this makes sense to me. I have my own thoughts, using video game soundtracks for comparison because I am just that big of a dweeb.
The initial chord progression, or the key of those chords, kind of reminds me of the Super Mario World ghost house theme. Also, when it switches to a major key in the middle and end, it reminds me of the Pokemon Tower theme; someone more knowledgeable about music theory than me explained that this one specific note probably unsettled me because it there was a major chord sustained when most of the piece is--well, I'm not sure if it's a minor key, but it certainly isn't major! I usually love songs that play with relative majors and minors, but a sudden shift from a mysterious, mournful mode to a major key that doesn't resolve neatly does just sort of sit weird.

I'd say it's because of how lopsided the synths sound playing minor notes. I'm not very well versed in how to describe the melodies, but you can almost see the same thing in a lot of Maretu's music, like siu even thought they're completely different genres

      @mojabaka 3 года назад +71

@@kapitanmw I do speak Japanese actually, but the lyrics don't make much sense to me, even in English. To me it just sounds like she's talking about her ex boyfriend whom she left behind, or some shit like that, but it's impossible to say what the author had in mind. Hence my original comment. Someone posted a translation, I took the liberty and copied it here, so that you can take a look at it. I honestly think that the fact that the recording doesn't sound clear and that nobody knows who sings it, is what people mean by "creepy". It just has this old school cassette tape type of sound that may be unsettling sometimes. But I think the song itself is really upbeat. But that's just my opinion, I'm not a music expert at all. I wonder if the artist is still alive today (I really hope so).
Where are you going, chasing the wind, you withered leaves in the color of the setting sun?

      Fairway with a sad smile
Fly away to a faraway land
A star hangs in the sky as I depart

The lyrics translated to me also seem like it's a break up song of some sort. I don't feel that it's cursed though, just a little uncanny like that Japanese Kleenex ad.

The harmony in the verses is quite tense, with several diminished chords in a row, which is not a usual choice. The problem is that, for many people, the diminished chord is stereotypically "scary", so people who aren't too well versed in music can get unsettled with such bold harmony. Everything else about it is pretty run of the mill, though, so I think this is just people exaggerating stuff as the Internet often does.

    • @BATTIS94
      @BATTIS94 3 года назад +31

I do think the song is going for a creepy vibe. That section between the verses at 0:43 gives me that vibe, at least. I've heard a couple of City Pop songs doing that sort of thing and even adding some demonic chants into the mix, so I wouldn't be surprised if that "creepy" feel was intended.
BUT my guess is that most people think it sounds unsettling because the instruments are slightly out of tune. It's very jarring during the choruses, where you can hear the bass wobbling all over the place and the harmonies don't quite come together. Normally you would think "demos be like that" but the obscure factor here makes it sound like It's deliberate, and I guess It's pretty effective too.

That's the one I had in mind when I made that comment. Nirvana by Mioko Yamaguchi also starts with a chant (not demonic, though, considering we're talking about Nirvana here), but the song doesn't go for a creepy vibe. Touhikou by Miki Matsubara and Private Red by Yukiko Okada have (in my opinion) a similar "anxious" feel about them, if you're interested in songs with similar vibes.

Honestly if we could get this to play on the radios in Japan or some way that this can get on the airwaves so the older generation (of which this song is from) could hear it; and maybe that way we can finally find someone who would come forward and remember recording this and lead to the actual artist and singer to give credit. Yall.. i really wonder who this singer is. she has a beautiful voice, shes so talented.
Just imagine if she was around here somewhere, keeping quiet. i think its possible we may never find info about the song unless someone involved with it shares it..
I dont believe its cursed, its just really eerie (the music) and considering the past.
Imagine if she made more songs..
    LYRICS
Where are you going while following the wind, sunset colored dead leaves?
The door may be striked, but there is no sound...
While I sleep in the broken chair
The light outside the window is lighting me
I am dreaming about a unknown town...
Goodbye, you are speechless (no say)
With a sad smile, I will fly away
Flying away, to a distant country
In the sky I've started my new trip Aah...
    They took a star
Before letting the blue birds escape, put courage in their feathers
I want to escape the sky...
    I better stop my tears...
    Goodbye, you are gone(go away)
Your gentle eyes are flying away
Flying away, to a distant country
In the night I've started my new trip Aah...

EN: I think i changed my theory. The lady singing in here was someone that at the time somewhere in the late 80s or early 90s, used to be a freeter and i think she was seeking for a job in the music industry.
I think nowadays she's a voice actress and she perhaps is the voice of characters such as Rider from the Fate series, as well as Sakaki-san from Azumanga Daioh and the Vocaloid Megurine Luka

Certified bop! Idk but I had a McDonald’s Halloween cassette tape that sounded way creeper than this as a kid 😂. But will say the pre-chorus B (opening instrumentals, pre-chorus A, pre-chorus B…2x, Chorus, pre-chorus A, Bridge, Guitar Solo, and Chorus…) only part that sounds off to me based on the synths and her sad droning tone to convey the lyrics. It’s literally one of the saddest break up songs of City Pop based on the sad “Poetic” Lyrics. It’s like they took a teenage break up poem and then finally added the hook so it definitely sounds like a demo. Also the openings gives me major Latin/jazz vibes for some reason.
