    FIT TEST: The hospital where I worked in USA required me to be fit tested for N95 mask. This was to make sure I would be protected mainly from Tuberculosis, which was prevalent in our patient population. This was pre-COVID19. Maybe the hospitals cannot afford the FIT TEST requirement under the current states of emergency.

    I live in the US and from everything I’ve read the fit testing standard is the opposite of what you say in this video. N95 needs a fit test and kn95 does not. This is what is stated on the American dental association website as well.

    • @SmartAirFilters

      Great point, and it's good to see you questioning the claims! It seems backwards that the N95 standard wouldn't require a fit test but the KN95 one would. However that's the reality - but don't trust us, trust the actual data.
      Here's a link to the N95 standard, from the Code of Federal Regulations: www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CFR-2004-title42-vol1/xml/CFR-2004-title42-vol1-part84.xml#seqnum84.170
      The regulations list only two tests called "particulate filter efficiency level determination" and "Airflow resistance tests". The 3M table linked to in the description above also lists 'NA' for row "Total inward leakage (TIL)* -tested on human subjects each performing exercise" - i.e. 'fit test'.
      Remember, this doesn't mean that specific associations like the American dental association don't require fit tests for their organisations or teams! It just means that to call a mask an N95 mask, it doesn't need to have gone through a fit test before being certified.

      That may be the case! However note that N95 and KN95 masks can come in many different shapes and sizes, so (where possible) it's worth checking a few different masks to find the one that fits you best

  • @frankentronics
    @frankentronics 3 года назад +2

    The number 95 does not mean that the mask filters out 95% of particles. It means that it can filter out up to 95% of particles, not stating any specific size of particles. This is not the same as the statement made in the video, stating that it filters out 95% of particles. Now, it is also important to understand that the size of particles is not specified. Clearly, it can filter out larger particles more reliably than small particles.

    • @SmartAirFilters
      @SmartAirFilters  3 года назад +1

      Great follow up Frankentronics, however that’s not 100% right. The standard for N95 masks states that to be a P95, R95 or N95 mask it must have an efficiency ≥95%. You can find that by searching the official standard for ‘95%’ here: www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CFR-2004-title42-vol1/xml/CFR-2004-title42-vol1-part84.xml#seqnum84.170
      There are also very strict requirements on the size of particles that should be tested. For the N95 mask, the standard specifies:
      “When testing N-series filters, a sodium chloride or equivalent solid aerosol … The sodium chloride test aerosol shall have a particle size distribution with count median diameter of 0.075±0.020 micrometer and a standard geometric deviation not exceeding 1.86 at the specified test conditions as determined with a scanning mobility particle sizer or equivalent.”.
      That’s a very long-winded way of saying “it uses sodium chloride that is 0.075 micrometers in size” (the COVID-19 coronavirus is roughly 0.06 - 0.14 micrometers).

      Hi Antonio! Three randomized studies have found surgical masks are just as effective as N95 masks at preventing virus transmission. They hypothesize the main reason for this is that any mask can reduce the hand-to-face contact, although we don’t know this for sure. Data shows that surgical masks and N95/KN95 masks are just as effective as each other at reducing the spread of viruses. So it really comes down to a matter of personal choice. Surgical masks may be more comfortable over a longer period of time, and lead to less touching/removing of the mask. However N95/KN95 masks may be slightly better at actually filtering viruses. These are common on lots of KN95 masks, and are a result of the manufacturing process to make the mask. These small parts of the mask may have lower filtration efficiencies, however the rule is that KN95 masks must filter 95% of particles overall, so even if there are small areas that don’t quite reach 95%, the mask as a whole should.

      Exactly right Rombout. Fit tests are useful as they give an *indication* of how well a mask will fit on people's faces, but that's why a controlled test of the mask's filtration efficiency is also important. This is the one that's required for both N95 and KN95 tests.
      Note that not all KN95 masks are exactly the same. Different manufacturers may produce masks with slightly different shapes and fits, to if possible, it's worth trying out a few different masks to find which one fits you best.

      Hello Angel, we’ve run tests on masks with valves, there’s no increase in risk for the person wearing the mask. (Learn more here: smartairfilters.com/learn/smart-air-knowledge-base/masks-valves-less-effective/ )
      But you’re right: it increases the risk of viruses spreading for other people if the person wearing the mask with the valve is infected. That’s because the valve will let our water droplets back into the air, without filtering.
      If you’re concerned about virus transmission, then it’s best to avoid masks with valves.

    This video, as well as many other resources, have dumbed-down the definition of what N-95 masks can do. Starting at around 0:30, the fellow states that "N-95 means it filters out 95% of particles". This is correct, but it is also incomplete. What he did NOT say is "N95 filters out 95% of particles, of 0.3 microns (or larger) in size". That has always been the proper and complete definition of N95 filtration - that the particles measured are 0.3 microns or larger.
    Many places, including Wikipedia, are using this less thorough, less accurate definition of 'N-95'.
    I speculate that the definition has been dumbed-down because viruses are much, much, much smaller than 0.3 microns. Viruses in and of themselves, are too small to be filtered effectively. The only way masks CAN protect us from viruses like the current one is by blocking/trapping micro-droplets common in exhaled air. By stopping these virus-bearing droplets (which they do) they prevent infection. But as for free-floating, non-droplet virus molecules? Not a chance. NO facemask stops them. There never has been a mask that can filter free-floating viruses, and there probably never will be.

      Unfortunately, that’s not 100% right.
      Hope this clarifies!

    I used both of them. 3M N95 masks fit to the face tightly as its loops run around your head. KN95 has loops only for ears.
    Breathing with KN95 is much easier as air through its fabric moves very easily. It may not filter as much as N95.
    KN 95 has exhale Valve. It may send unfiltered covid air from the patient into air.

    • @SmartAirFilters
      @SmartAirFilters  4 года назад +6

      Valves are not a requirement for KN95 or N95 masks, it's not part of the standard but up to the manufacturer to decide if they put a valve on or not. Here's a link to the N95 requirements that explains under what circumstances valves can be added to N95 masks: www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CFR-2004-title42-vol1/xml/CFR-2004-title42-vol1-part84.xml#seqnum84.77

    It makes sense to have a fit test requirement as a bad fit will definitely lower the level of efficacy/protection of any mask and also affect ease of breathing. Low ease of breath makes it more likely users will not wear their mask properly at all times often lowering it below their nose for example thus rendering the whole apparatus useless.

      Get 5 of it, number them, and use them in order. So basically you use #1 on the 6th day, #2 on 7th day and so on. Remember to keep days mask away after days use for 5 days, virus wont survive that long over the mask surface, hence you don't need to sterilize it if you simply put it away for 5 days

      They are normally designed to be single use only, but now the advice since there is such a shortage of them is that they can be used up to 5 times. Just make sure you leave 5 days between uses for any possible virus to deactivate. I have a lot so I rotate through them, storing used ones for up to a month or more before using them again. It is not ideal, since they are really meant to be disposable, but these are exceptional times, so yes, 5 times.
      A better option is the reusable silicone respirators with replaceable filters. They are hard to get, bulky, you will look like you're ready for the apocalypse or a riot, but they fit tighter, and the P100 filters are made such that they will last for the duration of the pandemic. Years before you need to change them if you're not using them in a dusty environment.

    • @jamesmilton3490

      I shorten the ear straps by tying loops in them. This increases the tension and helps seal significantly. Also rounding the apex of the nose metal strap before adapting to the face reduces the gap that is often there. I don't know but I think that KN 95's probably would be equivalent to n 95's if they can be made to seal properly. I'm thinking about adding straps to the loops to go around the head similar to n 95 masks.

    • @jpdemer5
      @jpdemer5 4 года назад +1

      I have them and they seal just fine for me. It may depend on the shape of your face. I assume the KN-95 is designed with Chinese users in mind, and for that reason it could fit differently on European or American faces.

  • @dcarrera01
    @dcarrera01 3 года назад

    This video is terrible, and you got the most important part wrong. The N95 is the one that has a fit test, and that is IMPORTANT because KN95 masks almost always have the ear-loop design which fits more loosely and allows more air to flow around the mask. In the US, NIOSH has never approved an N95 mask with the ear-loop design. All of them have straps that go behind your back because that holds the mask more securely on your face and less air leaks out.

    • @SmartAirFilters
      @SmartAirFilters  3 года назад

'fit test'.
      That said, as we specify in the video - most organisations that use N95 masks DO require fit tests - the requirement is at the organisation level and not at the CFR level. It’s confusing, and in fact actually a mute point, since N95 are almost always fit-tested by the organisation anyway.

    I was wondering if you knew when it come to protecting against covid-19 infection whether a surgical mask that has BFE rating is better than a N95 that doesn't have a BFE rating, tecchnically isn't that just a dust musk. My understanding with covid you need a Surgical N95 like the 3M 1860 or 1870+ or softmed N95 particular respirator & surgical mask, is that right? Or do you not need a BFE rating when it comes to N95 and protecting against covid-19 (but you do need a N95 with BFE rating so surgical & N95 for hospital staff in Australia)?

      Smart Air thanks for the info. It’d be great if you guys could list a few places where we could get some and get ready for the 2nd wave. Isolation or lockdown are not for ever. The only defense we have got are masks. The report of two infected hairdressers didn’t spread the virus to their clients proved that masks are effective in fighting the virus. If I know where to get some, I’ll get them and donate to anyone who would be willing to wear one.
