This is such a helpful guide! All of my analog cameras are for photography and I've wanted a Super 8 for forever, but I had no idea where to start. Thanks for the guide!
Thanks for this video Henry! I'm leaving on a trip soon to Glacier National Park and just ordered my first cartridge and was so confused on how to get it processed and digitized.
I found one of your videos on TikTok a few months ago, and last week I purchased a Kodak Instamatic. I always lowkey thought that shooting anything on film was inaccessible, but this video really made it seem more doable and influenced my decision to give it a try! Thanks for all of the advice!
Wow, romanticizing the Super 8 film! I filmed and edited in S-8 between 1969-1982. Today is even a super cheap mobile phone making better quality film, and if you like the old fashion style (without finger prints ;-), there are good filters making look-alikes ;-)
@@JoelAlzugaray yesss bro. Its going slow because I had to fix other things in life and actually still am but its almost finishes. Im planning to make short movies. Where u from bro?
Question, if I shoot in 18fps, why would I scan it at 24fps and slow it down by 25%? Are there any drawbacks to shooting in 18fps and having it scanned in 18fps? (editing on final cut pro)
Do the cameras tend to be electric or clockwork? If electric, what's the battery situation like? Do you have to chase down some weird proprietary thing that's older than you are and might not even hold a charge?
I've got a piece of advice man. If you plan on doing something bigger with this hobby, i suggest being more genuine. You stretch truth for views and you're only getting a couple of em. Tell people what is shot on the super 8 and what is faked. Be honest about where you got your camera. "Found my grandpas super 8." That's not clickbait bro. That's a lie. Which makes me not trust you or your content. You're cashing in for short term views when you could be striking an unsaturated niche. Be genuine, and take it seriously. You could start something. Good luck.
I have a very old Eumig one. It’s a very good model unaware of the model name. Still to get use out of it. Got it for a real steal as well. Some of these are going for stupid money now.
Hey Henry! I just got a Cannon 514XL with the 50D and 500T film which setting do I put the camera at for each film tungsten or daylight? Great vid btw!
Erik Drake if you are shooting in daylight put it on the daylight setting and if you are shooting during night or tungsten lighting put the setting on tungsten... regardless of what film you have in the camera.
You should actually have it on Tungsten mode regardless, Back when these cameras were in production pretty much all of the film stock available was Tungsten balanced. So the cameras themselves include a CAA filter for tungsten and daylight. When you select tungsten, there is no filter but when you slide to daylight, a tinted filter is activated. So if you are using daylight balanced stock such as 50D (the D stands for daylight) and you then put the daylight filter on the camera, this will apply a daylight filter to film which is already daylight balanced and make the footage a lot warmer than it should be. That being said, if you plan to shoot your 500T stock (tungsten balanced) outdoors in sunlight, in this case you can put the daylight filter on. But this is the only case when you would want to take the filter off tungsten and move it to daylight, shooting tungsten film in daylight conditions. I really think this guy should read up a bit more before giving out advice like this or making a 'beginners guide' altogether to be honest as it's misinformation and film stock, processing and scanning isn't cheap and you're sending people down the wrong path due to a lack of knowledge. Not trying to be a snob here but if you want to be an educator in any field you really should read up a bit more.
Hi men I have a question. I own a Canon Auto Zoom 518 (8mm). And I used it once, i used a 50D Vision but I have an issue. After recieving my digital footage I found out that like 2/3 of my footage is overexposed. 1/3 of the usable footage looks pretty good but the other 2/3 is just white (I was recording on a very sunny day). Does this mean that 50D is not good enough for these heavy sunny days or do you think it has to do something with my super 8 camera? I need your help. Thanks.
Hey man, what luts have you been using to grade the super 8 footage. I've shot a few rolls but kind of struggle when it comes to the grade, I haven't found a lot of info online regarding a clean grade workflow?
Quick question: say you’re shooting in day and then you wanna shoot again at night. Can you just interchange the film cartridges from 50D to 500 or is it like once you put it in you have to finish it
StayClem Kodaks new film is daylight loading. So you can swap them out in broad daylight, at the consequence that you'll lose some frames (hardly even noticeable).
There’s something romantic about old at home family videos with no sound.
Short, sweet, simple! How most informative videos should be! Thank you
just picked up one of these cameras and looking forward to using it in a an upcoming music video. Thanks for the helpful video Henry
Excellent advice, very informative. great to see more people getting into this. Loving your work!
So thankful for this info! I’m about to start adding super 8 footage to my wedding films and your video was so helpful!

I mean, thanks. I have my own Canon Canon 312 Xl-s Canosound Super 8mm and I want to start my own project. Your video helped me a lot.
Hey there I was wondering if you can line up this film good with audio after the appending up and slowing down of the video from the developing?

Awesome, will have to try it. I just got one from All places...Goodwill lol for $10
Maybe a stupid question but could I make a movie with this camera? I dont know many things about camera's. And i wanna make a movie.
you can make a movie with the camera on your phone if you want to! In the end the camera that you are using it is all about an aesthetic decision.

Waw! Interesting! ! Thanks for sharing!
Great video! How did you expose? Did you use a light meter? Also, how does the camera read the ASA?
Great video! Is the 50D film the best for shooting outdoors on a sunny aftenoon? With a Canon 514 xl that is...
yes

I don’t know anything about film types or camera types.
Your music overlay is too loud for a while in the beginning, then can still be too loud.
How do you know how much film you’ve shot?
Thanks for the introduction to this, excited to dive in. I came from TikTok btw
